March 2004 #88
Didn't we have great fun this past month. Johnny was at the BAFTA awards and the Oscars...not to mention Secret Window press conference photos and all the award season press. OH and of course...Johnny won an Actor at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for best actor in a motion picture (but he wasn't present). Congratulations!! OK...Here are some sites with Oscar night photos -
johnnylubber - IN THE PRESS Starlight456 - Johnny in Entertainment Weekly (March 5th) - The Deal Report - MOVIES ...SAG Awards king Johnny Depp could outact most actors working today with just one eyeball, and he's negotiating to prove it in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, the true story of a Frenchman afflicted with locked-in syndrome ("a complication of a cerebrovascular accident in the base of pons," according to an old New England Journal of Medicine we found lying around the office), who wrote a 1997 memoir by blinking it out with his left eye, his one working body part. Julian Schnabel (Before Night Falls) is directing. There was a picture of Johnny with it from the BAFTAs. There's also a section called "2003 The Year In Box Office." It has a picture (drawn) of "the loopy pirate" and other well-known characters of the year. He was also mentioned under Television for Charlie: The Life and Art of Charles Chaplin. "Not only is a clear evolution of the famous Tramp character laid out, but people like Johnny Depp and Martin Scorsese show up to help explain to the young'uns that Chaplin was more than just a dude with a funky mustache." Check the other post for listings. trey71 - Johnny is on the cover of next week's TV Guide too (February 28-March 5) along with Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom. The title on the front of the TV Guide says "Oscar's Year of the Hunks". Inside the guide is a article about Johnny (Best Original Guy) and smaller articles about Orlando and Viggo. There's also a feature in the TV Guide titled "And The Winner Isn't..." and there's a mention of Johnny in it. It says: Best excuse to add a new character to a classic Disneyland ride: Johnny Depp in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl". Also in the Orlando Bloom article, they mention a little bit about the sequel to "POTC". johnnylubber and Rox - After expressing shock at his Best Actor win at the Screen Actors' Guild awards, Johnny Depp, thanked Nicolas Cage for his first big break. "Nic introduced me to his agent and she sent me to a casting director, who landed me my first job on Nightmare on Elm Street which saved me from eviction." Readers might like to be reminded that this first job ended in a monosyllabic Depp being turned into a bubbling soup of blood and gore by Freddy Krueger. Obviously the roles got better. WhatWillYouSay - This is from my newspaper yesterday. Mainly about Robert Rodriguez, but there was a giant Sands pic to match. Hollywood Loves This Budget Bliss - IT'S no wonder Hollywood studio executives love Robert Rodriguez. They offer him huge sums to direct films, which he declines and insists on making them for about half the price. What happens next? The films are hits, the profits are even greater and everyone's happy... Rodriguez's new film, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, is a case in point. It is the last instalment in the blood-and-guts El Mariachi trilogy. Antonio Banderas (as the guitar-wielding El Mariachi) and Salma Hayek return from its predecessor, Desperado, and Johnny Depp has a star turn as a comically corrupt, amoral CIA agent deeply embroiled in a plot to assassinate the Mexican president. "I just loved how fast we were able to shoot," recalls Rodriguez, mulling over Once Upon a Time in Mexico. "Johnny has a big role, yet he was only on set for eight days. He's never done anything like that before." Rodriguez shot the film fast and loose. Using a digital high-definition camera meant that he could see immediately if a scene had worked - no need for time-consuming reshoots. And Depp was signed up only on the day the film started rolling, fleshing out his role as the agent after he arrived...But in truth, Rodriguez is no outsider. Every Hollywood studio clamours for his services and he has starry actor friends who will appear for him at a fraction of their normal fees - Depp, of course, but also George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino, who appeared as two murderous brothers in Rodriguez' vampire-cowboy From Dusk Till Dawn. Ryno Savvy - Johnny meets his match Star magazine - This is just saying about how Johnny met Johny Vegas in The Ivy. Found in this weeks issue of Star magazine, in England. LONDON Hollywood actor Johnny Depp and stand-up comedian Johnny Vegas have rarely been mentioned in the same breath...until now. The odd couple may share a name but the similarities end there. Or so we thought. While Johnny Depp, 40, is one of Hollywood's hottest stars, with gorgeous French wife, Johnny Vegas, 32, is a beer-swigging northern comedian who made his name talking to a puppet monkey. So you could say we were mildly surprised to spot the guys enjoying a cosy meal together at posh London restaurant, The Ivy. And we've been racking our brains to think what they could have found to talk about. They may have been chatting about fatherhood-Depp has two young children and Vegas has just had a little boy with his enstranged wife. But let's hope they were locked in conversation about working on a new movie project together. Whatever their discussion, the pair certainly turned heads at the swish restaurant. Johnny Depps chocolat - Widescreen magazine has a Once Upon a Time in Mexico cover. Buddy Brit - In the March issue of Sky magazine (TV guide), Johnny is on the front cover and there is a 2 page article. I know this has been posted but I don't think there are any scans. There are also 3 more pics of Johnny as Jack Sparrow, and 2 little reiews of POTC Herfooness - This is from the Australian Womens Day dated Feb 9th. It's a section where they decided whether the couple are soulmates or not. Star Gazing - Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis - Johnny embraces everything that makes a true Gemini. He's turned 40 but looks 10 years younger than that. He's living life, doing things, having a ball. He's got the attitude to go with all these attributes as well. If you dont like him, he really doesnt care. And as for staying within strict social parameters? He kicked them over a long tim ago. He does not - and will not - conform and he loves pushing the boundaries. That is why so many of his movies veer towards being arty rather than mainstream. Consequently, Vanessa must have felt as though she'd won the lottery when she scored him. But thats about where any sort of connection in their spiritual profiles ends. Although I'm looking with a magnifying glass, trying to find something else to jump up and down about, I'm unable to find it. Her profile shows that she just wants to be loved and would be more than happy to take the back seat in any relationship as long as she wasn't on her own. So she's in for the long haul, no matter what. After all, would you kick him out of you bed? Johnny is independent, strong-willed and will do anything he feels like, exactly when he feels like doing it. Through his relationship with Vanessa, he's found a woman who'll let him do exactly that. Ultimately they'll end up being two people who share children and live under the same roof, but having their own, quite different lives. Strangely, though, that sort of arrangement might just suit them. Are they soulmates? No, they're not.

Meeps - There's a one page article and a big picture of Johnny in the Swedish version of ELLE (# 3) on page 100. Nothing new in the article for older fans and the pic might not be new either ... But they do call him "Definitionen av läckerbid" which I translate as "The definition of delicious"
anerje - Small article in the UK Daily Star about Johnny at the Baftas party. He didn't stay very long, as 'I hate award ceremonies. I really do. They're just not my scene, so much fuss. Full of people with huge egos and such like.' He says 'I love Vanessa, of course I do, but it's always gonna be nice to have so much female attention. Flattering. Women come up to me and stare - but I'm used to it now - and so is my wife'. He was asked about Pink's comment on 'having a threesome' with Johnny and Vanessa, and laughed and said 'my lips are sealed'. He spoke to Joely Richardson, and also spoke highly of McKenzie Crook, his pirates co-star, but drew a blank when asked about the Office. POTC is also featured in Satellite magazine for the UK. Not a very good feature - just a re-hash of Johnny's career with no new photos. He's also featured in this week's UK National Enquirer - Oscar hopefuls - no new pix there either. Nicole - In the magazine Amica there's a new picture of Johnny on the piano. From GQ. Vicki - Johnny shares the cover of the Feburary 21-27 issue of TV Guide with Jennifer Aniston and Sarah Jessica Parker. The title is Before They Were Stars! Here's how TV launched their careers. Inside is picture from Deauville (I think) and one from 21 JS. The cover is a recent photo with blonde hair and glasses and a small picture from 21 JS. This is only the second time Johnny has appeared on the cover of TV Guide (trivia bit). The first was with Holly Robinson during the 21 JS days.

In more strange news concerning the Ed Wood DVD, the March 2004 issue of Premiere Magazine with Jude Law on the cover includes a review of the Ed Wood DVD -in fact it is the first DVD reviewed in the section and includes an awesome full page picture of Burton, Depp, and Sarah Jessica Parker on the set of the film. Here is the review: WST - celebrity magazine (Belgium) has an little feature on "hot" guys. johnny has a full page pic there taken at teh venice filmfestival (jeans, white shirt). you can see the beads on his jeans very well. (the magazine has about the same size as glamour magazine.) Elsie - Tomorrow's (sunday, february 15) new york times has a special oscar section with articles (small) about the nominees and the times' critics predictions. johnny is not predicted to win, but there is a nice little write-up by elvis mitchess and a big picture of captain jack hanging by a rope. most of the section is advertising but there are other things in it. it's worth a look. the new york times is available all over the u.s. Alexa - Here is the text - JOHNNY DEPP - Johnny Depp's performance as Capt. Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" accomplishes a rare feat. It's a vivacious, garrulous character turn that manages not to wear on the audience and not to inhibit the movie's momentum. Not only does Mr. Depp, as the star, keep the picture together; he also demonstrates the grace and graciousness that are ordinarily the province of the able supporting player. Woozy and contemplative — there actually appears to be a stray thought rattling around in the back of Sparrow's dreadlocked head — he finds a generous groove and stays knee-deep in it. At no point does he upstage the other actors in the film; he may be the Ernie Isley of movie actors. Even when he's at the center of the picture — which is often, what with all that mascara and braiding, all those gargled consonants — Mr. Depp's patience and concentration lend him the aura of an ensemble member. As a result, his cheeky attentiveness takes on the color of devilish authority. He's so rooted in the liquor-soaked Sparrow that he locates the reality in a character audiences might otherwise dismiss as a flight of fancy. He steals a movie that's a treasure-trove of commotion.
true johnny fan - I was just reading the PARADE, from the sunday paper and there was a little article about teens and they asked the question, "What's Your Dream Car?", and this is what one girls responded: "I know it doesn't quite fit 'dream car' status, but an old, beat up El Camino would be my godsend. I'd love to drive it out West down some deserted highway with tumbleweeds, sun blazing (the whole desert bit). Only one thing would perfect this Southwestern fantasy: Johnny Depp riding shotgun silhouetted against a red sunset in my little El Camino." -Cathleen Harris, 17, Pinckley, Mich.

Cute Mention in Cosmo Girl Magazine - They were doing a little interview with Rob Schneider for 50 First Dates called Fill Us In! He's basically giving dating advice. - Here's the question and answer:
IloveJD4Life21 - The March issue of J-14 arrived at my house, and i was totally hoping for a little johnny in it and maybe just by luck, the first page i flip to has him! He is in the "is it true?" section. It's about those two crazy girls that sneaked into the set of The Libertine that was already in the newsletter a week or so ago. silent eyes -johnny was on the cover of Western Australia, West Magazine, t.v guide this morning. i woke up, opened the paper, and there it was. there was a three page article on him as well. Both silent eyes and WhatWillYouSay typed up the article for us. aimeePG - In the Time Annual that my parents get every year, there is a Johnny picture and paragraph for him on page 22. It says: "Hollywood was bewildered: Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands), known to love working for auteurs like Tim Burton and John Waters, was teaming up with Gore Verbinski, director of the Budweiser frog ads, on... a pirate movie? Surprise: Depp's hilariously overdone turn as Captain Jack Sparrow - based on Rolling Stone Keith Richards - helped turn Pirates of the Caribbean into a summer smash. Depp, 40, also made waves with his indelible portrayal of a rogue CIA agent in Robert Rodriguez's Once Upon a Time in Mexico - and with his remarks questioning the U.S. invasion of Iraq."
anerje - In the Express newspaper yesterday (2/7), Pirates co-star Mackenzie Crook, who picked up Johnny's Empire award, says he gave Johnny DVDs on the Office in the hope he'd get JOhnny hooked, but didn't hear any feedback LOL! In this month's Empire magazine (3/04), POTC has been voted 19th best film of ALL TIME.

Emma - Calendar Live, LA Times has an aritcle called - This piracy is rooted in rock 'n' roll February 29, 2004 - about the Keith Richards connection with Jack Sparrow. People with Jack Malvern - The Times, February 26 2004 - Squeezing two big egos on to one small island could call for Wisdom JOHNNY DEPP and John Malkovich are the first of a new wave of Hollywood celebrities who are going to make the Isle of Man the Beverly Hills of the British Isles. Despite the island’s reputation for intolerance (homosexuality was finally decriminalised only in 1992) and having more than its fair share of motorcycling enthusiasts, it is destined to become the film capital of Europe because of a whopping 25 per cent tax break. It has always had a generous tax policy, but received new interest from film-makers two weeks ago when the Government closed a tax loophole in Britain to prevent investments from people not actively involved in running film partnerships. The Libertine, starring Depp and Malkovich, has been relocated to the island as a direct result of the change in the law and will begin shooting next week. The only problem for film stars is that luxury hotel rooms are scarce. The island has no five-star hotels and the best four-star room has been bagged by Malkovich, who is already in the capital, Douglas, shooting Colour Me Kubrick. Depp will arrive to find Malkovich ensconced in the Hilton’s King Suite, gleefully pressing his trousers and generally admiring the glowing light switches and automatic door closer. Malkovich could also take advantage of the 150 slot machines and bingo hall in the hotel casino. Depp, who is playing the debauched 17th-century poet John Wilmot opposite Malkovich’s King Charles II, won’t be at a complete loss. A spokeswoman for the Isle of Man Film Commission said: “If he doesn’t like the Hilton, he can always stay with us.” Or call on the island’s most prized resident celebrity: Sir Norman Wisdom. Sydney Morning Herald - February 21, 2004 - Peta Pan - Even though Kelly Macdonald, star of the upcoming ABC-TV drama State of Play, recently married Travis bassist Dougie Payne, she still finds herself fending off advances from young suitors. Young female suitors. "I have a part in an upcoming film Neverland, about the life of J.M. Barrie," Macdonald told Pop Tart. "It's with Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, and I play Peter Pan. And Johnny's daughter came to the set to visit when I was in costume, and she thought I was the most amazing thing ever. After sitting on my knee, she ran over to her mum [Vanessa Paradis], who was standing away a little bit. Then her mum came over and said: 'She just told me she met the little boy Peter Pan.'" As Ewan McGregor discovered in Trainspotting, Macdonald is anything but a little boy. Bizarre - The Sun, 20 February 2004 - FORGET the Two Ronnies — here are the two Johnnies. Hollywood hunk JOHNNY DEPP and Northern comic chunk JOHNNY VEGAS made an unlikely duo when they both went to London’s posh Ivy restaurant. Depp, star of Pirates Of The Caribbean and Blow, looked every inch the filmstar in a hat and mac, while Vegas had dressed for dinner (as in kebab and chips on the sofa) in a T-shirt and cap. Although they didn’t dine together, they looked like the best of pals as they chatted in the doorway. An onlooker said: “They seemed like they were very good friends as they left. “Strangely, it was Johnny Depp who was hanging on every word Johnny Vegas was saying — and not the other way round.” Depp could be a Vegas fan — he loves British comics and has admitted to watching all the Fast Shows. Or maybe Vegas was just telling him he should have gone to Specsavers. Click here to see pictures. footnote - Johnny Vegas actually has a role in The Libertine
Entertainment Weekly - February 20, 2004 Empire Film Awards - Johnny Wins Best Actor - Wednesday February 4. Johnny Depp won Best Actor for his part in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Johnny did not attend the show. Johnnylubber - found this information - Depp's best actor award was received by his British Pirates co-stars, Kevin McNally, Jack Davenport and The Office star Mackenzie Crook. Daily Star - February 1, 2004 - NEIL SEAN'S THE BIZ - JOHNNY DEPP took advantage of an offer while in London. He was buying a mass of shirts in Austin Reed, all reduced from GBP 39 to GBP 14.95. He told the assistant: "I have to look smart for some promotion work very soon." WEBSITES Jess - Two sites with candid photos of Johnny - First at ILM Images. Second at Film Magic. Some articles about Johnny's win at the SAG Awards- atomic ice - Depp, Theron Win SAG Acting Honors - LOS ANGELES - Johnny Depp was a surprise lead actor winner Sunday at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," while Charlize Theron took the best-actress honor for the serial-killer drama "Monster." Depp, who did not attend the awards, won for his role as a jittery buccaneer in the summer blockbuster, beating out Sean Penn, who had been considered the favorite for "Mystic River."... johnnylubber - From the BBC: Surprise win at pre-Oscar awards - Johnny Depp was not there to collect the award Johnny Depp has been named best actor at the Screen Actors Guild awards - throwing this week's Oscars wide open. He won the award for Pirates of the Caribbean - in a surprise victory over the favourites to take the title, Bill Murray and Sean Penn. All three are also nominated for best actor at the Oscars on Sunday. The Screen Actors Guild awards can sometimes give clues to potential Oscar winners, as film actors make up 22% of the Oscar voters. Depp was not present to collect his award. USA Today excerpt: Buoyed by a shortened award season, most of the front-runners in the Oscar race solidified their standing Sunday at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Hollywood's final honors before next week's Academy Awards. The one SAG shocker: Johnny Depp taking top acting honors with his slurred, loveable swashbuckler in Pirates of the Caribbean. Depp, who is also nominated for an Oscar, throws a wrench in the best-acting race, which was considered a two-man contest between Sean Penn in Mystic River and Bill Murray in Lost in Translation. Excerpts from The Washington Post article entitled Depp Steals Show at Screen Actor Guild Awards - A cast of Hollywood hobbits and a "Monster" killer played by Charlize Theron won top honors at the Screen Actors Guild awards Sunday, but a fishy pirate portrayed by Johnny Depp stole the show in an upset best actor victory. But Depp's victory added an element of suspense to next week's Oscars by giving him an award no one expected over favorites Bill Murray and Sean Penn. Bill Murray in "Lost in Translation" and Sean Penn in "Mystic River" were believed to have had a lock on the favorite's position for best actor after earning Golden Globe awards for acting in January. Depp, who played the wild-eyed and fanciful Captain Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl", was not on hand, but backstage Al Pacino, who won the actor award for his role in cable TV mini-series "Angels in America," amplified the shock of everybody in the crowd. He lifted an eyebrow and declared himself "really surprised" and "really thrilled." "He's done so many interesting parts over the years that he got a reputation for being quirky, but he really wasn't. He's a fine actor," Pacino said. Depp, "Rings" Bag SAGs - From E! Online: excerpts: Well, ahoy, mateys. The Oscar race for Best Actor just got interesting. A no-show Johnny Depp was the upset winner for Best Lead Film Actor Sunday night at the 10th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Depp, honored for his Keith Richards-styled sea dog in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, beat back odds-on choices Lost in Translation's Bill Murray and Mystic River's Sean Penn.... Until the SAGs, the final mainstream red-carpet event prior to next Sunday's Academy Awards, the lead actor category had been just as predictable. For two months now, it's been Murray or Penn. (At the Golden Globes, it was both.) Prior to the SAG Awards, Depp had won, well, the admiration of his peers. (No small thing, but hardware's always nice.) pntr He was the best Actor this year (and of his generation) PERIOD. He took what could have been an average role in a SFX movie and turned it into a masterpiece. He pushed the envelope of creativity...mainly by having fun with his role and getting totally immersed in it without concern for "what they think" ....this is the true definition of a real artist...not manufactured but from way within. He kicked the butt of every artist out here and said, see how it's done? Now you go and do it. That's what we're alive for...not to be misunderstood as TRYING to be weird, or wild, but first learning your craft and then taking away all of the fear of rejection and ridicule and just going for it. This is Justice with a capital J (and D)...Depp style. I'm so proud of him. They'll make a big deal over him not being there but if I understand this Board, he's in London ? Correct? The Oscars should be fun. It seems as if the real actors are back in charge of the zoo. Hehe, I was waiting for JoBlo's reaction: We don't usually announce every two-bit award show winner on our site, but when a surprise as big as this occurs, it's nice to let the world know about it. Johnny Depp won BEST ACTOR at this year's SAG (Screen Actors Guild) awards!! Wow. Is that cool or what?! What's nuttier is that he was chosen over three greatly favored nominees including Sean Penn and Bill Murray (both heavy Oscar favorites) and Ben Kingsley (the fourth nominee was THE STATION AGENT's Peter Dinklage). The one thing that sets the SAG awards apart from many of the other award shows is that they're actually voted on by OTHER ACTORS, i.e. the nominees' peers. In other words, of all the working actors in Hollywood today, they all believed that Depp's Jack Sparrow from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN was the best male performance of the year. Nice! Now as much as I'd have to agree with them that his performance was great (and took the film to another level), I suspect that many people also voted for his many other unique contributions to film over the past decade. Whatever the case, he's won it and suddenly an Oscars win doesn't seem as remote as it seemed just yesterday. Go Depp! ........ Unfortunately for us, Depp was not there to accept.
Reemi - Great article about Johnny at Independent.co.uk. Another article about Johnny's chances for an oscar at Lowell, MA, Sun. Another great article about Johnny's Oscar chances at The Boston Channel. Secrert Window poster at Joblo with this text -It's no secret that I have a man-crush on Johnny Depp, but the whole truth is that I've admired both his work and his work ethic for years now and consider EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, DONNIE BRASCO, FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS, SLEEPY HOLLOW, BLOW and FROM HELL, to be among my most re-watched flicks. I've also got a couple of his posters draped on my bedroom walls, which is kinda creepy, but cool, at the same time. That said, I guess the studio picked up on my adoration for the man and his work and sent me the high-resolution version of his SECRET WINDOW poster today. Click on Johnny's nose to see it enlarged...the poster, that is.. Cute story from columnist who would like to see Johnny win the Oscar at NY Daily News. Another great article about Johnny with quotes at The Age. An interesting take on Johnny's Oscar nod at Daily Northwestern. Story from the Calgary Sun by a reporter that once got a ride from Johnny. Surprise makes Depp the talk of Tinseltown - BY BILL ZWECKER SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST. Everybody -- and I do mean everybody -- was talking about almost nothing else." That's the buzz from a top Hollywood producer who was as surprised as anyone by Johnny Depp's big Screen Actor's Guild best actor upset Sunday night. "At the HBO party, more people were gossiping about Johnny's win than watching that final episode of 'Sex and the City' [which was being screened]. I didn't run into anyone who didn't think Sean [Penn] wouldn't win -- except for one guy who thought Ben Kingsley might pull an upset. Personally, I thought [Bill] Murray was the only one who could beat Penn." The post-mortem in Tinseltown Monday had industry insiders debating whether the SAG win might foretell the Oscars Sunday. Requesting anonymity, a major player -- and former Academy board member -- told this column, "I still think Penn will win the Oscar, but my gut tells me it's a lot closer than people thought." Considering the actors' branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is the largest contingent, the SAG win (voted on only by actors) is important. "However, assuming the entire vote is close between everyone, Sean probably has a slight edge --with Bill and Johnny close behind. ... But, you've got to love it! A close race makes it much more fun -- except if you're one of the people involved!" *As for Depp, it sounds as though he may be mining future Oscar gold with a highly likely deal. Universal Pictures is quickly moving ahead with plans to film the Jean-Dominique Bauby autobiography The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, directed by noted artist-turned-director Julian Schnabel, who helmed Depp in his second film, "Before Night Falls." Depp would play Bauby, the editor of Elle France, who was left only able to move his left eye after being paralyzed by a major stroke. Daily Variety reports the script is being penned by Oscar winner Ron Harwood ("The Pianist"). Depp's shock - MOST of the awards went to predictable winners. But you could almost hear a gasp in the room when Johnny Depp was named Best Actor. Up against Sean Penn's gut-wrenching performance in Mystic River and Bill Murray's touching Lost In Translation, Depp won for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl . For the oh-so-serious, "I Am An Actor" SAGs, it was an odd choice. Herald Sun prettyxpirate - From msn.com. 23 February 2004 - Johnny Depp pulled out a surprise at the 10th Screen Actors Guild awards on the weekend by walking off with the Best Actor in a Leading Role gong for his role as Capt. Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean." And he wasn‘t even there to pick it up. Conspicuously absent from the ceremony, Depp became the biggest surprise of the night as the guild‘s main awards went to the frontrunners tipped for Oscar glory next week. Odds–on favourite Charlize Theron won the Best Actressin a Leading Role award for her portrayal of America‘s first female serial killer Aileen Wuornos in "Monster, while Tim Robbins and Renee Zellweger were honoured for their supporting roles in "Mystic River" and "Cold Mountain" respectively. And as if to underline that no awards ceremony is worth its salt without an award being given to a certain Middle Earth movie, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" added yet another gong to its collection with the best ensemble cast gong.

"After being around for so long -- it's coming up on 20 years for me -- all these kids were going to see the movie and I was just really touched, you know. Really, really moved," the reclusive Sexiest Man Alive tells Australia's Sydney Morning Herald. "Like, when you come out on the street and meet little kids and they go, 'Oh man, you're Captain Jack Sparrow!' You know, it just doesn't get any better than that." Depp, who currently lives in a small village outside of Paris with longtime girlfriend Vanessa Paradis and their two children, isn't making any plans to settle back in Hollywood. "L.A. is too fast," the onetime hotel wrecker tells the paper. "There is too much of everything, just too much. In France, I can have distance and sort of see the game for what it is, rather than trying to understand it from the inside. I'm not swimming in the soup bowl. I'm not getting overcooked in that big stew pot." johnnylubber - Chud (from Variety) - 2.21.04 - For quite a while now, Johnny Depp has been one of this generation's best actors, but only recently has most of the population become aware of this secret, thanks to his swaggering rum-soaked swashbuckler in Pirates of the Caribbean. Fortunately, Depp isn't letting the exposure affect his project choices, which have always tended to be on the quirky side. The cool-coifed chameleon is set to star in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, based on the autobiography of Jean-Dominique Bauby, who penned his memoirs using one eye after suffering a debilitating stroke that left a singular ocular apparatus his sole method of communication. Trapped in his body, Bauby vividly describes adventures and sensations he can no longer experience. Depp will next be seen in Spider-Man scribe David Koepp's adaptation of the Stephen King tale Secret Window, playing a writer accused of plagiarism by psycho John Turturro, and as Peter Pan author James Barrie in the biopic Neverland. He's also attached to The Libertine, about Britain's debauched Earl of Rochester, and The Rum Diary, Benicio Del Toro's directing effort based on Hunter S. Thompson's tangle of love and booze. On top of that is a Pirates sequel (or two), and playing the dancing candyman Willie Wonka in Tim Burton's adaptation of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Secret Garden official site has been updated with pics and other stuff. P.S. beware of spoiler info on the site,. Great animation/video of Secret Window including poster at IFilm. BBC: Johnny Depp comes to town - Johnny Depp will be arriving in England on 23rd February for the filming of his new movie 'The Libertine'. Johnny will play the Earl of Rochester in 17th Century England. The poet Earl is even more of a womaniser than Johnny's previous role of Captain Jack Sparrow in 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. The Earl's love interest is Elizabeth Barrie, played by British actress Samantha Morton who starred as a 'precog' in 'Minority Report'. The film is produced by John Malkovich who also stars in it as King Charles II. Filming is taking place somewhere outside London.

mellymel - There is a show on AMC (American Movie Classics) that is called the Hollywood Hunt club, and it's about the paparazzi chasing celebs for pics and on today's episode, Johnny and Vanessa were featured. Vanessa was coming out of a boutique shop in the white fur coat that was on the Yahoo pics, and Johnny was coming out of a restaurant. Anyways, the photographer said that he thought "Pirates" was good, but not Oscar worthy and thought Bill Murray should win the for "Lost in Translation" and thought the performance was moving. It was something to that nature. Oh, well, we will have to wait and see come Oscar night!
Midori - Earlier this month, I read In Touch magazine. It had a short list of celebrities rumored to have voiced characters on upcoming episodes of King of the Hill. Among them was Johnny. johnnylubber - More information on this episode at TV Tome.

Saturday Feb 21st 7pm Channel 7, Joe Siegel's Road to the Academy Awards - They showed exerpts from POTC and told about how Johnny Depp was the start of the Academy nominating comic roles for Oscars. But Joel Siegal noted that the academy will still be honoring someone in a drama! Joel Siegal's pick was also Sean Penn.
Vicki - I think I might have found another Oscar show but it might just be Joan Rivers red carpet thing on another channel. It's the Style channel at 6:00 pm 2/29 - On the Red Carpet. I believe that E! and the Style channel are connected. But just in case. Also, ABC will be having a half hour count down to Oscars at 8:00 2/29 right before the Oscars show. true johnny fan -
I was just watching channel 118 (A&E) and they had a show on called "Love, Hollywood Style". It was talking about love on and off the set, and it mentioned Johnny and Winona in Edward Scissorhands. It showed about how they were in love on and off the set and stuff. The whole show is 2 hrs long, but the Johnny mention is around 12-13 mins into the show. Johnnys little tid bit is only about 3 min long....but its still something to see! I don't know when it will be on again, but i'm pretty sure that they will re-show it...just check your tv listings and see when and what time it will be on again!

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Veteran movie critic and television entertainment news reporter David Sheehan gets up close with the actors and actresses vying to bring home this year's coveted Oscar. The 9th annual installment of "David Sheehan's Academy Awards Preview" will give audiences an inside look at the year's favorite films contending for the prestigious award. The special will air in syndication beginning February 14-29 (check local listings). With his unique and intimate style, Sheehan gets the movie stars to open up about their roles in the films that are creating major buzz surrounding the Academy Awards in 2004. This is the only pre-Oscar show that features candid conversations with all of this year's likely nominees. Tom Cruise discusses his character's spiritual journey in "The Last Samurai," Julia Roberts talks about her personal beliefs in the feminist consciousness that she acts out in "Mona Lisa Smile" and Russell Crowe speaks about his affinity for his role in "Master and Commander." The special also includes Nicole Kidman on her role in "Cold Mountain," Diane Keaton on "Something's Gotta Give," Sean Penn on his role in "Mystic River," Johnny Depp on "Pirates of the Caribbean," and Charlize Theron on her portrayal of real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos in "Monster." dramaced - The BAFTA film awards show is being broadcast on BBC American on Sunday, February 15th at 4PM Eastern, commercial free. Johnny is nominated for Actor in a Leading Role. He's up against Benicio Del Toro for 21 Grams, Sean Penn for 21 Grams, Sean Penn for Mystic River, Jude Law for Cold Mountain and Bill Murray for Lost In Translation. If he attends, should be fun to watch.
OTHER STUFF
Kim - Tiny Johnny mention on The Wayne Brady Show - They were doing some silly stuff of mixing alcoholic drinks you can make for the pre-Oscar party in people's homes. Wayne was pretending to be drunk and he said "I love Johnny Depp! He was great in that movie - Cold Mountain!" - he was just goofing - but it was funny to hear Johnny's name bandied about. He's everywhere these days - I LOVE IT!!!
Meeps - American Lung Association: Hackademy Awards Honor Depp and Best Actor Nominees with Pink Lung - A virtually smoke- free slate of Best Actor nominees for this year's Oscars earned a Pink Lung Award in the ninth annual Hackademy Awards, the Academy Awards spoof sponsored by the American Lung Association's Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down! program. Meanwhile, reviewers found better news within the Best Actor category, where Bill Murray's cigar puffing character from "Lost in Translation" was the lone smoker among five nominees. That included Johnny Depp in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," where the swashbuckling movie apparently threw tobacco overboard -- a pleasant surprise for reviewers. "You would expect to see smoking in 'Pirates of the Caribbean' because pirates are dirty and gross, and because of the time period. But it wasn't
there. They easily could have included smoking as a prop, but obviously chose not to," said reviewer Aimee Nishimura, 17 of Sacramento.
AyE HeArT PiRaTeS - Check out these cookies with Johnny's face on em' at Elenis.com They had them on E! News Live, and I was going to order some...until I found out that they were $55.00 a box.

Screenings will also coincide in L.A., but John will only attend the NY opening. I will update ASAP as to where this will happen. Alexa - The premiere is going to be held at Loews Lincoln Square (1998 Broadway @ 68th St). I believe that's the same place were the OUATIM premiere was at.

Japanese edition of LILM video and dvd are going to be released soon. The pic of dvd package is the same as the Japanese poster design. But, the video package pic is totally different. It looks so cool, but the price is around $160 (16,800yen), because it's for rental shops and usual people also have to pay the same price.
Imyourluvsong - Well ladies and gentleman they have officially announced POTC 2 on imdb.com. They are reporting the working title is Pirates of the Caribbean: Treasures of the Lost Abyss.
Deppiss - During a recent interview with Sci-Fi Wire, Tim Burton talked about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and why he loves Johhny Depp, "Burton said that he is awaiting a script before revealing details of his version of the beloved story. But he confirmed earlier reports that he will cast Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. "I love working with him," Burton said. "I've worked with him three times. He's my friend. [He] always surprises [me]. I like these kind of actors [who] don't care how they look. They're just willing, and there's a freedom to that and an excitement that I get from that. [Some] people are like, 'Wait, my light's not right,' or 'I'm not coming out of my trailer until this happens or that.' [People like Depp] are people ready to go."

The Libertine to Go Ahead - Variety, Tue, 17 February...The producers of "The Libertine" insist they will go ahead with their shoot, whether or not their tax equity deal from First Choice stands. But they may push the start date back a week to give extra time for re-financing. johnnylubber - From the BBC 2/22: excerpt: Johnny Depp's movie The Libertine, due to start filming on Monday, was also in doubt but finance has now been secured and it will be shot in the Isle of Man in April. Isle of Man Film, production company Mr Mudd and First Choice Films have agreed to co-finance the film, which also stars Samantha Morton and John Malkovich.
U.K. OUTLAWS MAJOR FILM FUNDS - BERLIN (Variety) --- The British film production sector was plunged into crisis Tuesday when the government suddenly outlawed some of the U.K.'s biggest tax equity funds, effective immediately. Bombshell, which came with no forewarning on a day already being called "Black Tuesday" by some producers, could trigger the collapse of numerous movie projects near or already in production.
The move will affect the financing not only of indie pics such as Johnny Depp (news)-starrer "The Libertine," due to start shooting next week, but also of big-budget Hollywood studio movies. Reemi - More information about the new law at Scotsman.

From Figures.com: Hot on the list is Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. According to our sources, NECA's two Disney theme park ride based Head Knockers released last year will be joined in 2004 by a line of movie based action figures. UK Toy Fair confirmed figures included Johnny Depp as the swashbuckling Jack Sparrow and Geoffrey Rush as the cursed Captain Barbossa.
Golden Shmoes winners - Two films ultimately came up as the big winners, and surprisingly KILL BILL: VOLUME I was not one of them (it had received the most nominations of any film, but did manage 6 runner-up spots) Not surprisingly, RETURN OF THE KING had the most wins with 10 awards in all, while PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and its stars, Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley, finished atop 7 different award categories. Nice going. To see all of the winners, click on this year's official poster below and hope to see you all back next year! Johnny won Actor of the Year for POTC! AND runner up for Best Supporting Actor of the Year for his role in OUATIM!!! He also won Favorite Celebrity of the Year with Keira as runner-up (she also won best T&A, lol). That's not all, he's also Coolest Character of the Year with Captain Jack Sparrow. Pirates won Biggest Surprise of the Year as well as runner-up for Best DVD of the Year. Most Memorable Scene in a Movie: Runner-Up: Pirates of the Caribbean - Jack Sparrow arrives to port. Best Line of the Year: Pirates of the Caribbean "But why is the rum gone?"
David Koepp's upcoming film version of the Stephen King novel Secret Window will get a score by Philip Glass, not James Newton Howard as previously reported. Glass' agent has confirmed to Music from the Movies that he is scoring the film, and that he is doing it alone without any other composer involved. Previously, James Newton Howard was signed to score the film and there were plans for him to do it in collaboration with Hans Zimmer. At this point, we have no information about Howard's departure from the project. Secret Window, starring Johnny Depp, Maria Bello and John Turturro, is set to open in the US on 12th March 2004.
