IN THE PRESS

Starlight456 - Johnny in Entertainment Weekly (March 5th) - The Deal Report - MOVIES ...SAG Awards king Johnny Depp could outact most actors working today with just one eyeball, and he's negotiating to prove it in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, the true story of a Frenchman afflicted with locked-in syndrome ("a complication of a cerebrovascular accident in the base of pons," according to an old New England Journal of Medicine we found lying around the office), who wrote a 1997 memoir by blinking it out with his left eye, his one working body part. Julian Schnabel (Before Night Falls) is directing. There was a picture of Johnny with it from the BAFTAs. There's also a section called "2003 The Year In Box Office." It has a picture (drawn) of "the loopy pirate" and other well-known characters of the year. He was also mentioned under Television for Charlie: The Life and Art of Charles Chaplin. "Not only is a clear evolution of the famous Tramp character laid out, but people like Johnny Depp and Martin Scorsese show up to help explain to the young'uns that Chaplin was more than just a dude with a funky mustache." Check the other post for listings.

trey71 - Johnny is on the cover of next week's TV Guide too (February 28-March 5) along with Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom. The title on the front of the TV Guide says "Oscar's Year of the Hunks". Inside the guide is a article about Johnny (Best Original Guy) and smaller articles about Orlando and Viggo. There's also a feature in the TV Guide titled "And The Winner Isn't..." and there's a mention of Johnny in it. It says: Best excuse to add a new character to a classic Disneyland ride: Johnny Depp in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl". Also in the Orlando Bloom article, they mention a little bit about the sequel to "POTC".

johnnylubber and Rox - After expressing shock at his Best Actor win at the Screen Actors' Guild awards, Johnny Depp, thanked Nicolas Cage for his first big break. "Nic introduced me to his agent and she sent me to a casting director, who landed me my first job on Nightmare on Elm Street which saved me from eviction." Readers might like to be reminded that this first job ended in a monosyllabic Depp being turned into a bubbling soup of blood and gore by Freddy Krueger. Obviously the roles got better.

WhatWillYouSay - This is from my newspaper yesterday. Mainly about Robert Rodriguez, but there was a giant Sands pic to match. Hollywood Loves This Budget Bliss - IT'S no wonder Hollywood studio executives love Robert Rodriguez. They offer him huge sums to direct films, which he declines and insists on making them for about half the price. What happens next? The films are hits, the profits are even greater and everyone's happy... Rodriguez's new film, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, is a case in point. It is the last instalment in the blood-and-guts El Mariachi trilogy. Antonio Banderas (as the guitar-wielding El Mariachi) and Salma Hayek return from its predecessor, Desperado, and Johnny Depp has a star turn as a comically corrupt, amoral CIA agent deeply embroiled in a plot to assassinate the Mexican president. "I just loved how fast we were able to shoot," recalls Rodriguez, mulling over Once Upon a Time in Mexico. "Johnny has a big role, yet he was only on set for eight days. He's never done anything like that before." Rodriguez shot the film fast and loose. Using a digital high-definition camera meant that he could see immediately if a scene had worked - no need for time-consuming reshoots. And Depp was signed up only on the day the film started rolling, fleshing out his role as the agent after he arrived...But in truth, Rodriguez is no outsider. Every Hollywood studio clamours for his services and he has starry actor friends who will appear for him at a fraction of their normal fees - Depp, of course, but also George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino, who appeared as two murderous brothers in Rodriguez' vampire-cowboy From Dusk Till Dawn.

Ryno Savvy - Johnny meets his match Star magazine - This is just saying about how Johnny met Johny Vegas in The Ivy. Found in this weeks issue of Star magazine, in England. LONDON Hollywood actor Johnny Depp and stand-up comedian Johnny Vegas have rarely been mentioned in the same breath...until now. The odd couple may share a name but the similarities end there. Or so we thought. While Johnny Depp, 40, is one of Hollywood's hottest stars, with gorgeous French wife, Johnny Vegas, 32, is a beer-swigging northern comedian who made his name talking to a puppet monkey. So you could say we were mildly surprised to spot the guys enjoying a cosy meal together at posh London restaurant, The Ivy. And we've been racking our brains to think what they could have found to talk about. They may have been chatting about fatherhood-Depp has two young children and Vegas has just had a little boy with his enstranged wife. But let's hope they were locked in conversation about working on a new movie project together. Whatever their discussion, the pair certainly turned heads at the swish restaurant.

Johnny Depps chocolat - Widescreen magazine has a Once Upon a Time in Mexico cover.

Buddy Brit - In the March issue of Sky magazine (TV guide), Johnny is on the front cover and there is a 2 page article. I know this has been posted but I don't think there are any scans. There are also 3 more pics of Johnny as Jack Sparrow, and 2 little reiews of POTC

Herfooness - This is from the Australian Womens Day dated Feb 9th. It's a section where they decided whether the couple are soulmates or not. Star Gazing - Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis - Johnny embraces everything that makes a true Gemini. He's turned 40 but looks 10 years younger than that. He's living life, doing things, having a ball. He's got the attitude to go with all these attributes as well. If you dont like him, he really doesnt care. And as for staying within strict social parameters? He kicked them over a long tim ago. He does not - and will not - conform and he loves pushing the boundaries. That is why so many of his movies veer towards being arty rather than mainstream. Consequently, Vanessa must have felt as though she'd won the lottery when she scored him. But thats about where any sort of connection in their spiritual profiles ends. Although I'm looking with a magnifying glass, trying to find something else to jump up and down about, I'm unable to find it. Her profile shows that she just wants to be loved and would be more than happy to take the back seat in any relationship as long as she wasn't on her own. So she's in for the long haul, no matter what. After all, would you kick him out of you bed? Johnny is independent, strong-willed and will do anything he feels like, exactly when he feels like doing it. Through his relationship with Vanessa, he's found a woman who'll let him do exactly that. Ultimately they'll end up being two people who share children and live under the same roof, but having their own, quite different lives. Strangely, though, that sort of arrangement might just suit them. Are they soulmates? No, they're not.

'Diving Bell' surfaces on U's fast track - (Variety) Universal has fast-tracked an adaptation of the Jean-Dominique Bauby autobiography "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" for Julian Schnabel (news) to direct. Johnny Depp (news) is in negotiations to star. Bauby, the editor of Elle France, suffered a stroke that left his body completely paralyzed, except for his left eye, while his mind remained unaffected. Kennedy-Marshall is producing, and Ron Harwood ("The Pianist") wrote the script. Despite his affliction, suffered in 1995 when he was 43, Bauby used his eye to blink out a memoir, letter by letter, then died two days after it was published. The book describes his pre-stroke life, what it was like to be a prisoner inside his useless body and imagined journeys to exotic places he'd never visited. The memoir was a hot property when first auctioned by CAA in 1997, and DreamWorks and Sony partnered on the deal. Quick attachments were made with scripter Ron Bass and "Shine" director Scott Hicks (news). Then the project languished and Bass never wrote a draft. The agency extricated it five years later and sold it to Universal, where Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall became involved. Numerous directors sparked to Harwood's script, but the talk soon centered on Schnabel and Depp. A deal is being worked out with the director's ICM reps, and Depp's UTA reps will get the formal offer shortly. Schnabel worked with Depp on his second directorial effort, "Before Night Falls." johnnylubber - Another article at Movies Go. Rox - Yet another article at Zap 2 It.

Johnny & Vanessa on another French mag cover...DS magazine, March issue.

There's a one page article and a big picture of Johnny in the Swedish version of ELLE (# 3) on page 100. Nothing new in the article for older fans and the pic might not be new either ... But they do call him "Definitionen av läckerbid" which I translate as "The definition of delicious"

Johnny was in the UK Daily Mirror yesterday - pictured with UK comedian JOhnny Vegas. They dined out at the IVY. Nice black and white pic of Johnny - wrapped up against the cold. Wonder how he got on with Johnny Vegas? Also, mentioned elsewhere here, POTC has it's cable/satellite debut here in the UK next month and there are a few features in the monthly satellite mags. One has a very nice cover shot of Johnny on it.

Small article in the UK Daily Star about Johnny at the Baftas party. He didn't stay very long, as 'I hate award ceremonies. I really do. They're just not my scene, so much fuss. Full of people with huge egos and such like.' He says 'I love Vanessa, of course I do, but it's always gonna be nice to have so much female attention. Flattering. Women come up to me and stare - but I'm used to it now - and so is my wife'. He was asked about Pink's comment on 'having a threesome' with Johnny and Vanessa, and laughed and said 'my lips are sealed'. He spoke to Joely Richardson, and also spoke highly of McKenzie Crook, his pirates co-star, but drew a blank when asked about the Office. POTC is also featured in Satellite magazine for the UK. Not a very good feature - just a re-hash of Johnny's career with no new photos. He's also featured in this week's UK National Enquirer - Oscar hopefuls - no new pix there either.

Nicole - In the magazine Amica there's a new picture of Johnny on the piano. From GQ.

Vicki - Johnny shares the cover of the Feburary 21-27 issue of TV Guide with Jennifer Aniston and Sarah Jessica Parker. The title is Before They Were Stars! Here's how TV launched their careers. Inside is picture from Deauville (I think) and one from 21 JS. The cover is a recent photo with blonde hair and glasses and a small picture from 21 JS. This is only the second time Johnny has appeared on the cover of TV Guide (trivia bit). The first was with Holly Robinson during the 21 JS days.

Hope this has not been posted. In the new Details magazine w/ Jude Law on the cover, there is an article called "Beautiful actors who deliberately make themselves ugly" or something like that and Mr. Depp is one of the actors they talk about. I didn't get a chance to fully read the article - only read the part where they talked about Depp.

In more strange news concerning the Ed Wood DVD, the March 2004 issue of Premiere Magazine with Jude Law on the cover includes a review of the Ed Wood DVD -in fact it is the first DVD reviewed in the section and includes an awesome full page picture of Burton, Depp, and Sarah Jessica Parker on the set of the film. Here is the review:
The Movie: In this 1994 biopic of '50's grade-Z filmmaker Edward D. Wood Jr. (Glen or Glenda, Plan 9 From Outer Space), Tim Burton delves into his usual obsessions -creative misfits and the wonder of banal Americana. What makes Ed Wood his greatest movie (and surerly one of the ten best of the '90s) is that an artistic credo Burton has been hinting at in earlier films finally crystalizes: The "quality" of what's onscreen should only be judge by the love and urgency invested in it. Which is not to sat that as a director, Burton does't have exquisite taste. The movie he creates to depict the cross-dressing Wood's utter cheesiness and determination has a shrewdly crafted script by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (The People vs. Larry Flynt, Man On The Moon); Stefan Czapsky's hauntingly beautiful high-contrast black-and-white photography; a jazzy '50s-style score by Howard Shore, meshing Touch Of Evil's conga drumbeat with a woo-woo sci-fi Theremin theme; and dazzling and poignant performances by Johnny Depp as Wood and Martin Landau as Wood's friend and aging star, Bela Lugosi. Everyone in the movie exploits one another yet remains lovable, from Wood and his actors to the Beverly Hills Baptists who finance them to the popcorn-throwing audiences at his premieres. What matters to Burton is passion, even when it leads to no good end. The Disc: The movie works remarkably well on the small screen and the sound and images on this special edition DVD are simply gorgeous. Included as extras are superb shorts on the Theremin score, on cross-dressing married men, on Landau's makeup, and on the production design, plus a fascinating, in-depth commentary track by Burton, Landau, writers Alexander and Karaszewski, cinematographer Czapsky, and costume designer Colleen Atwood. Movie: **** Disc: **** Ash - Lots Of Johnny In Premiere Magazine! - The one with Jude on the front. The show him for OUATIM, a pic of him, tim, and sarah j. parker for the ed wood dvd premiere (it got 4 stars!) and a little pic in the middle about the oscars. And also there is an ad for a contest on movie trivia and the 1st question is what 1990 film starring johnny depp did ve neill and stan winston win the oscar for best makeup. It's Edward Scissorhands.

WST - celebrity magazine (Belgium) has an little feature on "hot" guys. johnny has a full page pic there taken at teh venice filmfestival (jeans, white shirt). you can see the beads on his jeans very well. (the magazine has about the same size as glamour magazine.)

Elsie - Tomorrow's (sunday, february 15) new york times has a special oscar section with articles (small) about the nominees and the times' critics predictions. johnny is not predicted to win, but there is a nice little write-up by elvis mitchess and a big picture of captain jack hanging by a rope. most of the section is advertising but there are other things in it. it's worth a look. the new york times is available all over the u.s. Alexa - Here is the text - JOHNNY DEPP - Johnny Depp's performance as Capt. Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" accomplishes a rare feat. It's a vivacious, garrulous character turn that manages not to wear on the audience and not to inhibit the movie's momentum. Not only does Mr. Depp, as the star, keep the picture together; he also demonstrates the grace and graciousness that are ordinarily the province of the able supporting player. Woozy and contemplative — there actually appears to be a stray thought rattling around in the back of Sparrow's dreadlocked head — he finds a generous groove and stays knee-deep in it. At no point does he upstage the other actors in the film; he may be the Ernie Isley of movie actors. Even when he's at the center of the picture — which is often, what with all that mascara and braiding, all those gargled consonants — Mr. Depp's patience and concentration lend him the aura of an ensemble member. As a result, his cheeky attentiveness takes on the color of devilish authority. He's so rooted in the liquor-soaked Sparrow that he locates the reality in a character audiences might otherwise dismiss as a flight of fancy. He steals a movie that's a treasure-trove of commotion.

true johnny fan -
Hey I was looking at my friends magazine (Allure w/ Catherine Zeta Jones on the cover...sorry I didn't look at the month of it) and they had a little section about couples as Barbie dolls...They had Johnny and Vanessa as "French Kiss and Tell Barbie and Ken". They had a pic Johnny and Vanessa together and then a picture of a barbie that resembled Vanessa and a ken doll that resembled Johnny.

I was just reading the PARADE, from the sunday paper and there was a little article about teens and they asked the question, "What's Your Dream Car?", and this is what one girls responded: "I know it doesn't quite fit 'dream car' status, but an old, beat up El Camino would be my godsend. I'd love to drive it out West down some deserted highway with tumbleweeds, sun blazing (the whole desert bit). Only one thing would perfect this Southwestern fantasy: Johnny Depp riding shotgun silhouetted against a red sunset in my little El Camino." -Cathleen Harris, 17, Pinckley, Mich.

I bought InStyle, 4/04, yesterday because Vanessa had her first American Chanel AD featured in it, but there was a tiny Johnny mentioned as well. There is a small picture of him from the OUATIM premiere on PG 260 and he talks about about a book he likes. Here's the text: "Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates by Tom Robbins. It's about a CIA agent who has a taste for sex, drugs, and rock & roll, plus the supernatural. What a combo."

Cute Mention in Cosmo Girl Magazine - They were doing a little interview with Rob Schneider for 50 First Dates called Fill Us In! He's basically giving dating advice. - Here's the question and answer:
2.) Never go on a first date without bringing along: Johnny Depp

I was at Vons, looking through the magazines, desparately searching for any Johnny. And guess what? I found some! Star magazine, 2/24/04, Pg. 17--What the Other Friends Are Up to (Under Jennifer Aniston) Aniston teams up with hubby Brad Pitt--not onscreen, unfortunately, but to produce a remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory starring Johnny Depp. (No pic, unfortunately)
Then...Pg. 66 Star Reviews DVDs (Pic of Orlando and Johnny from Pirates, Johnny looking through that telescope thing) w/ caption and review.

The March issue of J-14 arrived at my house, and i was totally hoping for a little johnny in it and maybe just by luck, the first page i flip to has him! He is in the "is it true?" section. It's about those two crazy girls that sneaked into the set of The Libertine that was already in the newsletter a week or so ago.

silent eyes -johnny was on the cover of Western Australia, West Magazine, t.v guide this morning. i woke up, opened the paper, and there it was. there was a three page article on him as well. Both silent eyes and WhatWillYouSay typed up the article for us.

aimeePG - In the Time Annual that my parents get every year, there is a Johnny picture and paragraph for him on page 22. It says: "Hollywood was bewildered: Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands), known to love working for auteurs like Tim Burton and John Waters, was teaming up with Gore Verbinski, director of the Budweiser frog ads, on... a pirate movie? Surprise: Depp's hilariously overdone turn as Captain Jack Sparrow - based on Rolling Stone Keith Richards - helped turn Pirates of the Caribbean into a summer smash. Depp, 40, also made waves with his indelible portrayal of a rogue CIA agent in Robert Rodriguez's Once Upon a Time in Mexico - and with his remarks questioning the U.S. invasion of Iraq."

- In OK magazine (2/3), (last week's, sorry, only read it today), there's an article on stars who fall for the 'same woman' each time - and they feature Johnny, and compare his past g/f's.

In the Express newspaper yesterday (2/7), Pirates co-star Mackenzie Crook, who picked up Johnny's Empire award, says he gave Johnny DVDs on the Office in the hope he'd get JOhnny hooked, but didn't hear any feedback LOL!

In this month's Empire magazine (3/04), POTC has been voted 19th best film of ALL TIME.

BBC News - excerpts:
Thousands of UK film fans gave some of Hollywood's finest a raucous welcome at the 2004 Bafta awards in London - and BBC News Online was there to see it all. Emma Thompson admitted to feeling the cold. Cheering crowds thronged Leicester Square to join the celebrations for the British entertainment world's biggest night of the year. It made for a rousing atmosphere as some of the cream of the world's actors and film-makers got briefly close to their adoring public. Providing the red carpet glitz were a wealth of movie talent: among them Johnny Depp, Holly Hunter, Jude Law, Scarlett Johansson, Benicio Del Toro, Emma Thompson and Naomi Watts. All were greeted warmly - but by far the biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp. Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro thrilled the crowds. Depp, nominated for best actor, emerged from his limo as a conspicuous last-minute arrival - defying speculation that he might not show up. Asked about the crowd's overwhelming reaction, he jokingly told BBC News Online: "I paid everyone, I paid everyone."

Johnny Depp, 40, Best Actor nominee for playing Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean. How he get the look A wig, trinkets, lots of eye makeup and four capped teeth: one platinum and three gold (it was his own idea!) Chattanooga Times Free Press - March 1, 2004 Monday - Depp's 'Chocolate Factory' is sizing up as huge
With the Oscars now behind him, Johnny Depp has a full agenda ahead. He has "Secret Window" opening March 12 and production starting next week on "The Libertine" with John Malkovich and Samantha Morton. He also has "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" ahead. Production doesn't begin on that film until June, but preproduction on the flick is already in high gear, to hear producer Richard Zanuck tell it. "We've just started looking for the kids, looking at tapes. That's going to be a long process," says the illustrious filmmaker of finding the child actors who'll play contest winners venturing into the weird world of mysterious chocolate maker Willy Wonka (Depp) in Tim Burton's new adaptation of the Roald Dahl book. Plans call for "Charlie" to take up seven soundstages at London's Pinewood Studios, including the studio's famous giant 007 stage. "Everything in the factory will be built -- there'll be rivers of chocolate, fields of chocolate. It's no place for someone on a diet," notes Zanuck with a laugh. "Tim is dreaming it. "The script is in good shape. We have John August, who wrote 'Big Fish' for us, writing it," he adds, referring to his critically lauded Tim Burton feature of last year. Depp has been squeezing "Chocolate Factory" meetings with August, Burton and Zanuck in between Oscar hoopla and other commitments over the past couple of weeks. The new "Chocolate Factory" film is aimed at being closer to its source material than the Gene Wilder "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" musical of the '60s -- which Dahl was said to find lacking despite the fact he wrote it himself. Zanuck says that whenever people hear that the movie will combine the talents of Depp and Burton on a Roald Dahl book, "the response is excitement. It's going to be a lot of fun."

People with Jack Malvern - The Times, February 26 2004 - Squeezing two big egos on to one small island could call for Wisdom JOHNNY DEPP and John Malkovich are the first of a new wave of Hollywood celebrities who are going to make the Isle of Man the Beverly Hills of the British Isles. Despite the island’s reputation for intolerance (homosexuality was finally decriminalised only in 1992) and having more than its fair share of motorcycling enthusiasts, it is destined to become the film capital of Europe because of a whopping 25 per cent tax break. It has always had a generous tax policy, but received new interest from film-makers two weeks ago when the Government closed a tax loophole in Britain to prevent investments from people not actively involved in running film partnerships. The Libertine, starring Depp and Malkovich, has been relocated to the island as a direct result of the change in the law and will begin shooting next week. The only problem for film stars is that luxury hotel rooms are scarce. The island has no five-star hotels and the best four-star room has been bagged by Malkovich, who is already in the capital, Douglas, shooting Colour Me Kubrick. Depp will arrive to find Malkovich ensconced in the Hilton’s King Suite, gleefully pressing his trousers and generally admiring the glowing light switches and automatic door closer. Malkovich could also take advantage of the 150 slot machines and bingo hall in the hotel casino. Depp, who is playing the debauched 17th-century poet John Wilmot opposite Malkovich’s King Charles II, won’t be at a complete loss. A spokeswoman for the Isle of Man Film Commission said: “If he doesn’t like the Hilton, he can always stay with us.” Or call on the island’s most prized resident celebrity: Sir Norman Wisdom.

Sydney Morning Herald - February 21, 2004 - Peta Pan - Even though Kelly Macdonald, star of the upcoming ABC-TV drama State of Play, recently married Travis bassist Dougie Payne, she still finds herself fending off advances from young suitors. Young female suitors. "I have a part in an upcoming film Neverland, about the life of J.M. Barrie," Macdonald told Pop Tart. "It's with Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, and I play Peter Pan. And Johnny's daughter came to the set to visit when I was in costume, and she thought I was the most amazing thing ever. After sitting on my knee, she ran over to her mum [Vanessa Paradis], who was standing away a little bit. Then her mum came over and said: 'She just told me she met the little boy Peter Pan.'" As Ewan McGregor discovered in Trainspotting, Macdonald is anything but a little boy.

Hollywood hunk JOHNNY DEPP and Northern comic chunk JOHNNY VEGAS made an unlikely duo when they both went to London’s posh Ivy restaurant. Although they didn’t dine together, they looked like the best of pals as they chatted in the doorway. An onlooker said: “They seemed like they were very good friends as they left. “Strangely, it was Johnny Depp who was hanging on every word Johnny Vegas was saying — and not the other way round.” Depp could be a Vegas fan — he loves British comics and has admitted to watching all the Fast Shows. Or maybe Vegas was just telling him he should have gone to Specsavers. Click here to see pictures. footnote - Johnny Vegas actually has a role in The Libertine

Secret Window
STARRING Johnny Depp, John Turturro, Maria Bello, Timothy Hutton, Charles S. Dutton WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY David Koepp Koepp may not be a household name like his Oscar-nominated leading man, but he has carved out a darn nice career as a blockbuster screenwriter (Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man) and respectable thriller director (1999's Stir of Echoes). With Secret, he takes another stab at the genre, adapting a Stephen King novella about an author (Depp) who retreats to a lakeside cabin where he's tormented by a mysterious kook (Turturro). "My mother always asks, 'A nice little comedy--what would be so hard about that?'" says Koepp. To hear Depp talk about it, Mom's not going to be pleased this time, either: "I read it and was like, yeah, great, it's classic Stephen King," he told EW. "And then suddenly you go, 'Oh, s---! Are you kidding?' It makes this gigantic leap." Not that life on the Montreal set was all thrills and chills, thanks to the success of Depp's Pirates of the Caribbean. "We hired an actor and got a movie star," says Koepp, who adds that Depp handled his exploding celebrity with ease. "He just found it all kind of surprising and amusing and silly." What's the Big Deal? Hint: He also starred on 21 Jump Street. (March 12) Here's the photo.

atomic ice - Depp, Theron Win SAG Acting Honors - LOS ANGELES - Johnny Depp was a surprise lead actor winner Sunday at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," while Charlize Theron took the best-actress honor for the serial-killer drama "Monster." Depp, who did not attend the awards, won for his role as a jittery buccaneer in the summer blockbuster, beating out Sean Penn, who had been considered the favorite for "Mystic River."...

johnnylubber - From the BBC: Surprise win at pre-Oscar awards - Johnny Depp was not there to collect the award Johnny Depp has been named best actor at the Screen Actors Guild awards - throwing this week's Oscars wide open. He won the award for Pirates of the Caribbean - in a surprise victory over the favourites to take the title, Bill Murray and Sean Penn. All three are also nominated for best actor at the Oscars on Sunday. The Screen Actors Guild awards can sometimes give clues to potential Oscar winners, as film actors make up 22% of the Oscar voters. Depp was not present to collect his award.

USA Today excerpt: Buoyed by a shortened award season, most of the front-runners in the Oscar race solidified their standing Sunday at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Hollywood's final honors before next week's Academy Awards. The one SAG shocker: Johnny Depp taking top acting honors with his slurred, loveable swashbuckler in Pirates of the Caribbean. Depp, who is also nominated for an Oscar, throws a wrench in the best-acting race, which was considered a two-man contest between Sean Penn in Mystic River and Bill Murray in Lost in Translation.

Excerpts from The Washington Post article entitled Depp Steals Show at Screen Actor Guild Awards - A cast of Hollywood hobbits and a "Monster" killer played by Charlize Theron won top honors at the Screen Actors Guild awards Sunday, but a fishy pirate portrayed by Johnny Depp stole the show in an upset best actor victory. But Depp's victory added an element of suspense to next week's Oscars by giving him an award no one expected over favorites Bill Murray and Sean Penn. Bill Murray in "Lost in Translation" and Sean Penn in "Mystic River" were believed to have had a lock on the favorite's position for best actor after earning Golden Globe awards for acting in January. Depp, who played the wild-eyed and fanciful Captain Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl", was not on hand, but backstage Al Pacino, who won the actor award for his role in cable TV mini-series "Angels in America," amplified the shock of everybody in the crowd. He lifted an eyebrow and declared himself "really surprised" and "really thrilled." "He's done so many interesting parts over the years that he got a reputation for being quirky, but he really wasn't. He's a fine actor," Pacino said.

Depp, "Rings" Bag SAGs - From E! Online: excerpts: Well, ahoy, mateys. The Oscar race for Best Actor just got interesting. A no-show Johnny Depp was the upset winner for Best Lead Film Actor Sunday night at the 10th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Depp, honored for his Keith Richards-styled sea dog in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, beat back odds-on choices Lost in Translation's Bill Murray and Mystic River's Sean Penn.... Until the SAGs, the final mainstream red-carpet event prior to next Sunday's Academy Awards, the lead actor category had been just as predictable. For two months now, it's been Murray or Penn. (At the Golden Globes, it was both.) Prior to the SAG Awards, Depp had won, well, the admiration of his peers. (No small thing, but hardware's always nice.)

pntr He was the best Actor this year (and of his generation) PERIOD. He took what could have been an average role in a SFX movie and turned it into a masterpiece. He pushed the envelope of creativity...mainly by having fun with his role and getting totally immersed in it without concern for "what they think" ....this is the true definition of a real artist...not manufactured but from way within. He kicked the butt of every artist out here and said, see how it's done? Now you go and do it. That's what we're alive for...not to be misunderstood as TRYING to be weird, or wild, but first learning your craft and then taking away all of the fear of rejection and ridicule and just going for it. This is Justice with a capital J (and D)...Depp style. I'm so proud of him. They'll make a big deal over him not being there but if I understand this Board, he's in London ? Correct? The Oscars should be fun. It seems as if the real actors are back in charge of the zoo.

Hehe, I was waiting for JoBlo's reaction: We don't usually announce every two-bit award show winner on our site, but when a surprise as big as this occurs, it's nice to let the world know about it. Johnny Depp won BEST ACTOR at this year's SAG (Screen Actors Guild) awards!! Wow. Is that cool or what?! What's nuttier is that he was chosen over three greatly favored nominees including Sean Penn and Bill Murray (both heavy Oscar favorites) and Ben Kingsley (the fourth nominee was THE STATION AGENT's Peter Dinklage). The one thing that sets the SAG awards apart from many of the other award shows is that they're actually voted on by OTHER ACTORS, i.e. the nominees' peers. In other words, of all the working actors in Hollywood today, they all believed that Depp's Jack Sparrow from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN was the best male performance of the year. Nice! Now as much as I'd have to agree with them that his performance was great (and took the film to another level), I suspect that many people also voted for his many other unique contributions to film over the past decade. Whatever the case, he's won it and suddenly an Oscars win doesn't seem as remote as it seemed just yesterday. Go Depp! ........ Unfortunately for us, Depp was not there to accept.

Secrert Window poster at Joblo with this text -It's no secret that I have a man-crush on Johnny Depp, but the whole truth is that I've admired both his work and his work ethic for years now and consider EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, DONNIE BRASCO, FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS, SLEEPY HOLLOW, BLOW and FROM HELL, to be among my most re-watched flicks. I've also got a couple of his posters draped on my bedroom walls, which is kinda creepy, but cool, at the same time. That said, I guess the studio picked up on my adoration for the man and his work and sent me the high-resolution version of his SECRET WINDOW poster today. Another great article about Johnny with quotes at The Age.

An interesting take on Johnny's Oscar nod at Daily Northwestern.

Story from the Calgary Sun by a reporter that once got a ride from Johnny.

Surprise makes Depp the talk of Tinseltown - BY BILL ZWECKER SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST. Everybody -- and I do mean everybody -- was talking about almost nothing else." That's the buzz from a top Hollywood producer who was as surprised as anyone by Johnny Depp's big Screen Actor's Guild best actor upset Sunday night. "At the HBO party, more people were gossiping about Johnny's win than watching that final episode of 'Sex and the City' [which was being screened]. I didn't run into anyone who didn't think Sean [Penn] wouldn't win -- except for one guy who thought Ben Kingsley might pull an upset. Personally, I thought [Bill] Murray was the only one who could beat Penn." The post-mortem in Tinseltown Monday had industry insiders debating whether the SAG win might foretell the Oscars Sunday. Requesting anonymity, a major player -- and former Academy board member -- told this column, "I still think Penn will win the Oscar, but my gut tells me it's a lot closer than people thought." Considering the actors' branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is the largest contingent, the SAG win (voted on only by actors) is important. "However, assuming the entire vote is close between everyone, Sean probably has a slight edge --with Bill and Johnny close behind. ... But, you've got to love it! A close race makes it much more fun -- except if you're one of the people involved!" *As for Depp, it sounds as though he may be mining future Oscar gold with a highly likely deal. Universal Pictures is quickly moving ahead with plans to film the Jean-Dominique Bauby autobiography The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, directed by noted artist-turned-director Julian Schnabel, who helmed Depp in his second film, "Before Night Falls." Depp would play Bauby, the editor of Elle France, who was left only able to move his left eye after being paralyzed by a major stroke. Daily Variety reports the script is being penned by Oscar winner Ron Harwood ("The Pianist").

Depp's shock - MOST of the awards went to predictable winners. But you could almost hear a gasp in the room when Johnny Depp was named Best Actor. Up against Sean Penn's gut-wrenching performance in Mystic River and Bill Murray's touching Lost In Translation, Depp won for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl . For the oh-so-serious, "I Am An Actor" SAGs, it was an odd choice. Herald Sun

prettyxpirate - From msn.com. 23 February 2004 - Johnny Depp pulled out a surprise at the 10th Screen Actors Guild awards on the weekend by walking off with the Best Actor in a Leading Role gong for his role as Capt. Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean." And he wasn‘t even there to pick it up. Conspicuously absent from the ceremony, Depp became the biggest surprise of the night as the guild‘s main awards went to the frontrunners tipped for Oscar glory next week. Odds–on favourite Charlize Theron won the Best Actressin a Leading Role award for her portrayal of America‘s first female serial killer Aileen Wuornos in "Monster, while Tim Robbins and Renee Zellweger were honoured for their supporting roles in "Mystic River" and "Cold Mountain" respectively. And as if to underline that no awards ceremony is worth its salt without an award being given to a certain Middle Earth movie, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" added yet another gong to its collection with the best ensemble cast gong.

Interesting article about Johnny's chances to score an Oscar at Oscar Watch.

Here's a cool article/interview from Marinij.com about John Knoll (the man behind the Visual Effects for POTC). I'll just copy and paste the Johnny mentions.
IJ: How'd you turn Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush into such authentic skeletons?
JK: The basic principle we worked from in doing all the skeleton stuff was to never try to make a digital imitation of (the actors') performances, but to simply be their performances. So the scenes were shot with the actor doing his scene, which gave the director someone to direct and the cinematographer someone to light and the editor a performance to cut. And then when we got it, we had the perfect reference point from which to have the skeleton effects duplicate the performances as precisely as we could. So it's not us having to create a skeletal Johnny Depp doing his performance, it was actually him doing his performance.
IJ: Some people actually think Depp's whole performance is some sort of surreal digital creation.
JK: It was a bold, daring thing to do. I'm pleased to see he's being recognized for it.

Raquel2003 - I was trying to search for the date of the SW premier, and I found this article at Film Jerk.I just thought I might share another article on SW. Oh, and it mentions: "The story concerns one Mort Rainey, played by newly hot Johnny Depp, a novel writer undergoing a relatively acrimonious divorce."

aimeePG - Depp's New Fan Base - Johnny Depp is adjusting to being recognized by a whole new demographic following the success of "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl." "After being around for so long -- it's coming up on 20 years for me -- all these kids were going to see the movie and I was just really touched, you know. Really, really moved," the reclusive Sexiest Man Alive tells Australia's Sydney Morning Herald. "Like, when you come out on the street and meet little kids and they go, 'Oh man, you're Captain Jack Sparrow!' You know, it just doesn't get any better than that." Depp, who currently lives in a small village outside of Paris with longtime girlfriend Vanessa Paradis and their two children, isn't making any plans to settle back in Hollywood. "L.A. is too fast," the onetime hotel wrecker tells the paper. "There is too much of everything, just too much. In France, I can have distance and sort of see the game for what it is, rather than trying to understand it from the inside. I'm not swimming in the soup bowl. I'm not getting overcooked in that big stew pot." From Latest Oscar Gossip on MSN Entertainment

There are no roles for 12-14 year old female actresses.

Thisisgwent.co.uk - 5 February 2004 - Trudi to get bawdy with hot star Depp
TRUDI JACKSON is set to live every girl's dream - by appearing in a film alongside heart-throb actor Johnny Depp. The Pontypool actress has clinched a small speaking part in the film Libertine, a costume drama charting the debauched life of John Wilmot, the 2nd Earl of Rochester, a poet and friend of Charles II who lived from 1649-1680. Hollywood star Depp, whose hit movies include Pirates of the Caribbean, Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow, plays the male lead, while Oscar-nominated British actress Samantha Morton is the female lead. Dangerous Liaisons actor John Malkovich takes on the role of Charles II. Filming in the West Country begins next month. Directed by Lawrence Dunmore and adapted from a play by Stephen Jeffreys, Libertine lifts the lid on a bawdy period in English history. Now actress Trudi, 29, who is playing the role of a prostitute, can't wait to meet the stars. "It's really exciting - I'm looking forward to getting started," she says. "Just before Christmas I was doing a test-shoot, and when the director said action, and I turned round, I thought - I am actually doing what I have wanted to do all my life. "I've got massive respect for both Johnny Depp and John Malkovich and I feel so honoured and excited to be working with them..."The thing I like about Johnny Depp is the quirkiness he brings to his films - he brings an air of craziness to whatever he does. "They're two of the best in the industry and the feeling I'll be in the same room as them is just slightly over-whelming!" Trudi hooks up with the cast and crew on Monday, when she experiences her first script read-through with Malkovich and Depp...Entire article.

Funny article about Johnny's Oscar chances at Joblo.com.

Chud (from Variety) - 2.21.04 - For quite a while now, Johnny Depp has been one of this generation's best actors, but only recently has most of the population become aware of this secret, thanks to his swaggering rum-soaked swashbuckler in Pirates of the Caribbean. Fortunately, Depp isn't letting the exposure affect his project choices, which have always tended to be on the quirky side. The cool-coifed chameleon is set to star in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, based on the autobiography of Jean-Dominique Bauby, who penned his memoirs using one eye after suffering a debilitating stroke that left a singular ocular apparatus his sole method of communication. Trapped in his body, Bauby vividly describes adventures and sensations he can no longer experience. Depp will next be seen in Spider-Man scribe David Koepp's adaptation of the Stephen King tale Secret Window, playing a writer accused of plagiarism by psycho John Turturro, and as Peter Pan author James Barrie in the biopic Neverland. He's also attached to The Libertine, about Britain's debauched Earl of Rochester, and The Rum Diary, Benicio Del Toro's directing effort based on Hunter S. Thompson's tangle of love and booze. On top of that is a Pirates sequel (or two), and playing the dancing candyman Willie Wonka in Tim Burton's adaptation of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Secret Garden official site has been updated with pics and other stuff. P.S. beware of spoiler info on the site,.

BBC: Johnny Depp comes to town - Johnny Depp will be arriving in England on 23rd February for the filming of his new movie 'The Libertine'. Johnny will play the Earl of Rochester in 17th Century England. The poet Earl is even more of a womaniser than Johnny's previous role of Captain Jack Sparrow in 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. The Earl's love interest is Elizabeth Barrie, played by British actress Samantha Morton who starred as a 'precog' in 'Minority Report'. The film is produced by John Malkovich who also stars in it as King Charles II. Filming is taking place somewhere outside London.

Hey everyone. Well I was looking through the channels to see what would be on later this week, and on E!, Love Chain - Winona Ryder is going to be on tomorrow, Wednesday 18th.

I was just watching channel 118 (A&E) and they had a show on called "Love, Hollywood Style". It was talking about love on and off the set, and it mentioned Johnny and Winona in Edward Scissorhands. It showed about how they were in love on and off the set and stuff. The whole show is 2 hrs long, but the Johnny mention is around 12-13 mins into the show. Johnnys little tid bit is only about 3 min long....but its still something to see! I don't know when it will be on again, but i'm pretty sure that they will re-show it...just check your tv listings and see when and what time it will be on again!

Thumbs Down! program. Meanwhile, reviewers found better news within the Best Actor category, where Bill Murray's cigar puffing character from "Lost in Translation" was the lone smoker among five nominees. That included Johnny Depp in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," where the swashbuckling movie apparently threw tobacco overboard -- a pleasant surprise for reviewers. "You would expect to see smoking in 'Pirates of the Caribbean' because pirates are dirty and gross, and because of the time period. But it wasn't there. They easily could have included smoking as a prop, but obviously chose not to," said reviewer Aimee Nishimura, 17 of Sacramento.

I like these kind of actors [who] don't care how they look. They're just willing, and there's a freedom to that and an excitement that I get from that. [Some] people are like, 'Wait, my light's not right,' or 'I'm not coming out of my trailer until this happens or that.' [People like Depp] are people ready to go."

The Libertine to Go Ahead - Variety, Tue, 17 February...The producers of "The Libertine" insist they will go ahead with their shoot, whether or not their tax equity deal from First Choice stands. But they may push the start date back a week to give extra time for re-financing. johnnylubber - From the BBC 2/22: excerpt: Johnny Depp's movie The Libertine, due to start filming on Monday, was also in doubt but finance has now been secured and it will be shot in the Isle of Man in April. Isle of Man Film, production company Mr Mudd and First Choice Films have agreed to co-finance the film, which also stars Samantha Morton and John Malkovich.

U.K. OUTLAWS MAJOR FILM FUNDS - BERLIN (Variety) --- The British film production sector was plunged into crisis Tuesday when the government suddenly outlawed some of the U.K.'s biggest tax equity funds, effective immediately. Bombshell, which came with no forewarning on a day already being called "Black Tuesday" by some producers, could trigger the collapse of numerous movie projects near or already in production. The move will affect the financing not only of indie pics such as Johnny Depp (news)-starrer "The Libertine," due to start shooting next week, but also of big-budget Hollywood studio movies. Variety - Thurs., Feb. 12, 2004 - U.K. seeks list of periled pix
Gov't unyielding on film fund cutoff
LONDON -- The U.K. government gave little ground Thursday in its first meeting with British film reps over the tax financing crisis that has engulfed the industry this week. Inland Revenues officials requested a detailed list of movie projects likely to collapse as a result of the sudden and unexpected change in tax law, which they announced Tuesday. But they gave no clear indication whether they were prepared to grant these projects enough leeway to survive, and if so, where they will draw the line. Top of the at-risk list is "The Libertine," starring Johnny Depp and produced by John Malkovich and Russ Smith's Mr Mudd shingle. The $22 million pic, which starts shooting Feb. 23, was due to receive nearly a third of its budget from Grosvenor Park's First Choice fund, now outlawed by the change in tax rules. "It's mind-blowing," Smith commented. "I just came to Britain to make a movie. I didn't know that something that was legal might be made illegal in a second." Reps of the British Screen Advisory Council, producers' org PACT and the U.K. Film Council spent Wednesday scrambling to draw up the list of pics in peril by the 6 p.m. deadline set by the Inland Revenue...

Two Johnny Related Questions on Super Millionare Tonight - The first one was for the fastest finger question. The question was something like, "Put these tv shows in the order they debuted," and 21 Jump Street was mentioned. The second one was asking basically what was the ending to the title of POTC: Curse of the what? Of course, the answer was Black Pearl. Regis asked him if he saw the movie and the guy said, "Yeah, I loved it!"

AOL Moviegoer Awards *The Winners!!!* - Johnny won for BOTH Best Actor and Best Comedic Performance! Johnny got 52% of the votes for Best Actor and 39% of the votes for Best Comedic Performance. Also, Orlando and Keira won for Best Kiss recieving 29% of the votes. POTC Beat out LOTR and Finding Nemo for most wins! LOTR and Finding Nemo only won 2. You can see the rest of the winners HERE, but I think you have to have AOL for the link to work. Keisha Castle-Hughes, the "Whale Rider" star who at 13 is the youngest-ever best lead actress contender, said she really was hoping to do some stargazing. "I saw Charlize Theron," the New Zealander said of her "Monster" rival. "I was like, 'Oh, my God! Oh, my God!' ... I was interested in meeting Johnny Depp, but he's not here." Castle-Hughes said she's hoping for another chance to encounter the "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor nominee. "But that will have to wait for awards night," she said.

Yahoo Biz/ PR Newswire: With pearls featured prominently in two of this year's Academy Award® nominated films, "Girl with a Pearl Earring" and the "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl", PearlParadise.com is thrilled to be able to provide our Peacock Black Pearl Collection to the 125 Oscar® gift basket recipients. X JD excerpts from a Mackenzie Crook interview - The Sun (UK): Hi Mackenzie, I'm going to put you on the spot - which Johnny was best to work with, Depp or Vegas? And what other superstars have you met? Joanne, Kent
That's a good question Joanne. There were probably more laughs with Vegas, but I was more impressed with Depp. Johnny Depp has been a hero of mine for many years. That's no disrespect to Vegas though, he's a lovely man and very funny.
Who got most female attention on the high seas – you, Orlando or Johnny? Paul, Chigwell
I was nowhere near competing with them! Orlando's an amazing babe magnet, the girls go absolutely crazy for him. Johnny's a bit more untouchable, he's a legend and while girls love him they don't harbour any fantasies of marrying him.

From Figures.com: Hot on the list is Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. According to our sources, NECA's two Disney theme park ride based Head Knockers released last year will be joined in 2004 by a line of movie based action figures. UK Toy Fair confirmed figures included Johnny Depp as the swashbuckling Jack Sparrow and Geoffrey Rush as the cursed Captain Barbossa.

Golden Shmoes winners - Two films ultimately came up as the big winners, and surprisingly KILL BILL: VOLUME I was not one of them (it had received the most nominations of any film, but did manage 6 runner-up spots) Not surprisingly, RETURN OF THE KING had the most wins with 10 awards in all, while PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and its stars, Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley, finished atop 7 different award categories. Nice going. To see all of the winners, click on this year's official poster below and hope to see you all back next year! Johnny won Actor of the Year for POTC! AND runner up for Best Supporting Actor of the Year for his role in OUATIM!!! He also won Favorite Celebrity of the Year with Keira as runner-up (she also won best T&A, lol). That's not all, he's also Coolest Character of the Year with Captain Jack Sparrow. Pirates won Biggest Surprise of the Year as well as runner-up for Best DVD of the Year. Most Memorable Scene in a Movie: Runner-Up: Pirates of the Caribbean - Jack Sparrow arrives to port. Best Line of the Year: Pirates of the Caribbean "But why is the rum gone?"

David Koepp's upcoming film version of the Stephen King novel Secret Window will get a score by Philip Glass, not James Newton Howard as previously reported. Glass' agent has confirmed to Music from the Movies that he is scoring the film, and that he is doing it alone without any other composer involved. Previously, James Newton Howard was signed to score the film and there were plans for him to do it in collaboration with Hans Zimmer. At this point, we have no information about Howard's departure from the project. Secret Window, starring Johnny Depp, Maria Bello and John Turturro, is set to open in the US on 12th March 2004.

Johnny Depp can't wait to revive Captain Jack Sparrow - Johnny Depp says he can't wait to revive his pirate character for the sequel to The Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl. Depp stole the film as swashbuckling Captain Jack Sparrow, a role he based on Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. He said: "I went through a decompression period after the first film. If you're really connected with a character, you always do to some degree. "You miss the guy. You miss being that person. The only thing that was in the back of my mind was the hope that there would be a sequel some day, so that I could meet him again." Ananova

lady jolie - Neverland release date moved -
The founding Co-chairman of Miramax Films, Harvey Weinstein, has blamed the timing of the release of Cold Mountain for the film's failure to win an Oscar nomination in the best picture category...Citing the fact that the Oscars will be held in February this year instead of March, Weinstein told Newsweek, "I think the whole positioning of movies has changed because of this. "Other than The Return of the King every best-picture nominee was released prior to December." he said. In an effort to learn from his mistakes, Weinstein said Miramax would move the release of J.M. Barrie's Neverland, starring Johnny Depp, to October and would aim to release Martin Scorsese's The Aviator in November instead of late December.
