Hello Johnny Cyber Fans,

We had a glimpse of Johnny at two award shows this past month on TV. He help accept an award for Pirates at the Critics Choice Awards and came to the Golden Globe Awards where he was nominated for the Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy. There are lots of photo links in this newsletter. Here's all the news -

IN THE PRESS

Vicki -
Johnny will be featured in the Hollywood Issue of Vanity Fair on stands 2/10/04. The photo was taken inside his Hollywood home.

Entertainment Weekly 2/6/04 - Oscar Preview issue - Somehow, it seems unjust that Johnny Depp hasn't won an Oscar yet. but the fact that he's never even been nominated seems downright criminal. Still, considering his wiggy career, it makes a certain kind of sense that our strangest actor should get his first nod from the Academy for a freakin' pirate movie. A Jerry bruckheimer pirate movie whose plot points were cribbed from a kiddie ride, no less. "All I can say," says Deep, "is that for a guy like me, who's been dangling in this business for the last 20 years, to suddenly have something hit, it's unexpected and very touching. I'm unbelievably grateful." Us too. Because when the final bow was tied on the utterly serious year of 2003, we couldn't stop thinking back to how Depp's deep-sea delirium made a bleak summer a little brighter. Preening and swishing away on unsteady sea legs, Depp's Capt. Jack Sparrow was a delicious bit of cured cinematic ham--part swashbuckling Errol Flynn, part in-his-cups Foster Brooks. But most appealing of all was the rare sight of an actor just having fun. Up until now, Depp has been a Hollywood oxymoron: the egoless star. He tends to cede the spotlight in bigger movies, guiding his fellow actors to their best work. In 1993's What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Depp's hauntingly hushed performance allows Leonardo DiCaprio's to be heartbreaking; in 1994's Ed Wood, his daffy dreamer brings out the humanity in Martin Landau's Bela Lugosi; and in 2000's Chocolat, well, Juliette Binoche has never looked more radiant than she does reflected in Depp's eyes. All three costars got Oscar nominations. And all three times Depp got shut out. With Pirates, Depp finally seemed confident enough to unleash his bizarro id, consequences be damned. How ironic that the consequences now include more than #300 million at the box office and a long-overdue acknowledgement from Oscar.--CN

Globe magazine 2/3/04. They are making fun of his hair at the Critics Choice Awards but I like this picture about the best of what I have seen.

Another Critics Choice photo is in Hello! magazine 1/27/04. This is a great photo of J&V that is a full length.

in an article in People mag there is a little part where johnny is mentioned. im not sure if this has been posted or not... "....Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider) isnt really thinking about any of that though. Whats on her mind now is what to wear to the awards ceremony Feb. 29....and Best Actor nominee Johnny Depp. 'Im hoping to meet him,' she says. 'He's like God.'"

in the feb 9 in touch mag there is an article entitled " the 10 best rags to riches stories." Johnny is #8, in between Demi Moore and Leo Dicaprio.
#8 JOHNNY DEPP
moved 30 times in 10 years
long before he was considered a sexy hollywood hunk, Johnny Depp was a "hillbilly" nobody, growing up poor. born in a kentucky trailer park and the youngest of 4 children, Johnny and his family moved to florida when he was 7 and lived in a motel until his dad found a job. the family barely scraped by, moving 30 times in a decade to satisfy his waitress mom Betty's wanderlust. "to this day , when i pack a bag, it triggers some kind of trauma." says Johnny, 40. after Betty bought him a $25 guitar for his birthday, Johnny formed a band called The Kids, which covered songs by groups like The Ramones. 2 years later, he went to LA seeking a record contract. but instead, Johnny became pals with Nicolas Cage, who introduced him to his agent. soon, johnny had a big role in A Nightmare on Elm Street. "the union scale was $1,200 week, which was kind of inspirational in a way," says the actor-who, just three years later, was getting $45,000 an eposide for 21 Jump Street. Johnny, who earned $10 million for Pirates of the Caribbean, now lives on a sprawling farm in southern France. despite his earnings, the actor says his biggest purchase of 2003 was a Mont Blanc fountain pen. the article also has a picture of him that says, "Johnny has splurged on $18,000 bottles of wine in restaurants." another one telling of his dropping out of school. a picture of his LA home that he bought from Bela Lugosi, and a picture of a classic motorcycle that he keeps at his villa in France. Photos - one is a close up picture of him rubbing his chin at the PotC premiere. another is a picture of him when he was younger. his glasses are hanging off his ears, he has a white sleeveless shirt on, and a red plad shirt tied around his waist. he's also wearing a tan hat. the other two pictures are of his LA home and a motorcycle he owns.

This is the cover of a new Italian film magazine (DUELLANTI). There is an interview with Johnny in it.

On the Hello magazine site there is an article with a mention about Johnny's lips. Quote: If the results of a university study are to be believed, Johnny Depp's lips make him positively irresistible. I also found the title of a University study by Michael De Angelis, published by the State University of New York Press (2001) about Blake and Johnny: "Gender and Other Transcendences: William Blake as Johnny Depp". Sounds interesting ; -) !!

Here are some interesting Photoshop graphics pictures of Johnny at Southern GFX.

The Filmfestival in Rotterdam will start soon. This year they are also showing movies about gypsies. There is one documentary with a quote about Johnny in it.

The Dutch DVD Valley magazine has Jack Sparrow on the cover.

Savvy Scalliwag - Possible shooting locations for 'Wonka' - Willy Wonka and the Biggleswade factory
Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean - Superstar Johnny Depp could be shooting scenes for the remake of a classic film in Biggleswade. The actor, who has starred in last Summer's blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean and was dubbed sexiest man alive by People magazine, is set to play Willy Wonka in a new version of the Roald Dahl book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. And the Chronicle has heard that scenes from the film will be shot at Stratton Business Park. Producers Warner Bros were unable to confirm the reports, saying that although it was possible someone working on the film had been looking at locations for filming, the search would not begin in earnest until it had been cast. Businesses at Stratton park were mystified by the rumours, with a spokesman for Saxon Valley Foods commenting: "We haven't heard anything but it's caused quite a stir. We could all be Oompa Loompas." The film, which will be directed by Tim Burton, will tell the tale of a reclusive chocolate manufacturer who opens his factory to golden ticket winners. It was first brought to the screen in 1971, when Gene Wilder played Willy Wonka. For the full story see the January 9 edition of the Chronicle.

WST - francois marie banier - just to let you guys know that the catalogue from FMB exhibition last summer in paris is still available although many booksites on the net say it's "sold out" depending on where you live, it can be pretty expsensive, but it has the wonderful pic of johnny holding a very young lily-rose which i absolutely love and will scan for the site asap. (scans of that shot can be found at melody nelson's yahoogroup) other pics are on of vanessa breastfeeding lily-rose, a phot of johnny covered in painted notes (if you know FMB, you'll know what i mean) and the same shot that can be found on the cover of one of his other bookds ('past and present') . also featured are a shot of jim jarmusch and tim burton. there are two editions here are the isbn numbers for those who are interested.

Sony Opens Depp's Secret Window Early - The Hollywood Reporter Thursday, January 22, 2004 - Sony Pictures is releasing the Johnny Depp thriller Secret Window six weeks earlier than originally planned. The film, based on a novella by Stephen King, is moving from an April 23 release date to March 12. Jeff Blake, vice chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and president of worldwide marketing and distribution, said "we just had our first screening of the film, and it went great; Johnny Depp is terrific in this film. 'Secret Window' should be finished and ready to go for a March 12 release date, which looks like a very good slot." Written and directed by David Koepp, Secret Window is about a writer (Depp) going through a painful divorce, who is stalked by a psychotic stranger (John Turturro) who claims the writer stole his story. To force the writer to make amends, the stranger will go to any lengths, including murder. Maria Bello, Ving Rhames and Timothy Hutton also star. Sony will kick-off the media campaign for the film on February 1 with a spot during Super Bowl XXXVIII. The film is expected to receive a PG-13 rating. Other films slotted for the March 12 weekend are Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London, The Girl Next Door, The Prince & Me and Spartan. Here's a story about the early release found by johnnylubber at E! Online.

UK Star magazine - Issue 10, 24 January, of this little mag has a couple of small mentions. Page 37 has the now familiar pic of Johnny and Vanessa in her "is she pregnant" pose. Page 98 has the same pic, but clipped just to show Vanessa. It's part of the regular comment on celebrity fashions. One expert hates the outfit, another quite likes it. Page 133 has a feature on notorious hotels and mentions Johnny in relation to the Portobello Hotel (the champagne in the bath episode). Tiny pic of him with Kate Moss.

Johnny nominated for best actor BAFTA - The awards will take place on Sunday February 15 at the Odeon cinema, Leicester Square. Click here for nomination details.

JOHNNY'S EARL BEFORE SWINE
Being voted the sexiest man in the world has its drawbacks - as dishy Johnny Depp found out recently. The chiselled hunk became the victim of two rather desperate fans when he tried to film in a nightclub. The 40-year-old star was working on The Libertine, in which he plays the Earl of Rochester, when the admirers got wind of his princely presence. Depp had managed to evade the attentions of the duo until they broke onto the set of the Oceana nightclub in Kingston-upon-Thames. An insider revealed: "These two girls were very persistent and desperate to get near Johnny. "We told them that he wasn't there - but they wouldn't take no for an answer. "We had to remove them twice from the set and once we were even forced to chase them from make-up. Security eventually had to corner them in the Venetian ballroom section of the club and forcibly remove them. "You can't have a star of Johnny's size being bothered by crazy women running on around the set." No doubt Johnny was relieved to get back to the relative sanity of Hollywood for the Annual Critic's Choice Awards at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Saturday. Depp and girlfriend Vanessa Paradis , pictured above, were at the bash alongside stars such as sexy Scarlett Johansson.

There is a small mention and picture - Time Magazine, January 19, 2003 - Enough with swashbuckling. In Secret Window, due in April, Pirate of the Caribbean JOHNNY DEPP returns to what he does best--a good mope. Depp plays a depressed writer suffering through a divorce and accused of plagiarism by a creepy farmer (John Turturro). "One of the keys to [Depp's] character is his degree of bed head," says David Koepp, writer and director of the Stephen King adaptation. It's nice to see a guy get back to his (unbleached) roots.

CROSSING SWORDS - Wed Jan 7, 7:00 PM ET - (Variety) After a swashbuckling hit, Johnny Depp (news) will play another rogue, this one infamous for undoing his buckles. Following "Pirates of the Caribbean," Depp will go to the 17th century for "The Libertine," which begins production Feb. 23 outside London. Depp will star opposite John Malkovich (news) and Samantha Morton (news) in a tale based on the true story of John Wilmot, the Earl of Rochester, who was a poet, courtier and notorious rake. Adapted by Stephen Jeffreys from his own play, the film marks the feature debut of British commercials director Laurence Dunmore. The pic was touted at Cannes last year and has now firmed up its start date. "Pirates" marked the biggest hit of Depp's career, but the "Libertine" gig means he's sticking with his familiar game plan of bouncing between Hollywood mega-productions and small indie pics. "Libertine's" budget of about $16 million is close to Depp's asking price to star in high-profile studio pics. Following "Libertine," Depp is slated to shoot "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" for Warner Bros. He is also expected to reprise his Golden Globe-nominated role as Jack Sparrow in Walt Disney Pictures' "Pirates of the Caribbean 2." Samuel Johnson described the earl (Depp) as having "contempt of decency and order, a total disregard to every moral and a resolute denial of every religious observation. He lived worthless and useless and blazed out his youth and health in lavish voluptuousness." Little wonder, then, that the earl was a confidant of King Charles II (Malkovich). The earl's undoing, as well as his death at 33, came after he found himself smitten with Elizabeth Barry (Morton), a failing actress. Malkovich portrayed the earl when his Stepppenwolf Theater Co. in Chicago staged the play in 1996. When his Mr. Mudd producing partners Russell Smith and Lianne Halfon said it had bigscreen potential, Malkovich immediately earmarked Depp as the ideal Earl of Rochester. Depp was keen to take on the part, but the project faced eight years of struggles to lock in financing. Not only is the project a period piece, but the script doesn't soft-peddle the earl's prodigious sexual appetites. Asked if "The Libertine" could court an NC-17 rating, Smith told Daily Variety, "It's clearly something that will be a question. No doubt about it." Halfon, Smith and Malkovich will produce the film, with Chase Bailey of Paris Mudd exec producing. U.K.-based Odyssey Entertainment reps foreign sales on the pic, with Ralph Kamp and Louise Goodsill also acting as exec producers. Pic is financed with the participation of Robert Jones and the U.K. Film Council.

In Style Magazine - JD is featured in the transformations section. Much to his dismay, Johnny Depp started his career as a teen heartthrob. In 21 Jump Street, he was every girl's dreamboat. But Depp quickly ditched TV and took on serious movie roles. Now he's an actor's actor ... and a heartthrob. Check out his Transformations.

People Yearbook 2004 - Today at the bookstore I saw the People Yearbook 2004 and on page 52-53 there is that gorgeous B&W of JD (from the Entertainment Weekly shoot) along with sort of a recap of stuff we have already read. The pic (on page 52) was accompanied by the following quote: "He's such a nice bloke. Still, he's always going to be a pirate at heart."- Carribean costar Keira Knightley. Page 53 had the following article: JOHNNY DEPP. ARRGH! THE ACCLAIMED MOVIE PIRATE TURNED WAR CRITIC WENT OUT ON A PLANK From mutant topiary artist Edward Scissorhands to Z-movie director Ed Wood, Johnny Depp, 40, has never shied from outlandish roles. But his bravura portrayal of the fey, flighty, yet fiercely gallant Jack Sparrow in Disney's summer hit Pirates of the Caribbean may be the most popular performance of his iconoclastic career. "There's no b.s., no attitude," said his Pirates director Gore Verbinski. "He enjoys acting, and it shows." Depp also loves the expatriate life in France, where he shares a $2 million villa with his actress-singer girlfriend, Vanessa Paradis, 31, and their children, Lily-Rose, 4, and Jack, 1. "Each morning I can go to the little village not far from my house, have a cup of coffee, sit there with my girl and not worry about the paparazzi," he said, a relief for PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive of 2003. The pastoral escape has not mellowed his politics, though, and he took a harsh view of the invasion of Iraq, telling a German magazine, "America.....is something like a dumb puppy that has big teeth - that can bite and hurt you." A day later, perhaps trying to extricate foot from mouth, Depp said, "there was no anti-American sentiment" in his statement. "I love my country and have great hopes for it," which is why "I speak candidly and sometimes critically about it."

Other mag alerts this week, if you go to the newstand.
People Magazine (1/26) page 10 (pic of JD & V at Critic's Choice Awards) and page 116

Entertainment Weekly 1/23/04 - various small mentions sprinkled thoughout, a nice pic of him in his Brown pinstrike suit in a mention about The Libertine; mentions about Neverland and Secret Window release dates, and premiere of Lost in La Mancha on IFC next week. keddyjo - Quote from EW - "Yes...yes...oh, yes! Pirates of the Caribbean's Johnny Depp will again don - and, then, presumably, doff - period garb as famous 17th-century sex fiend John Wilmot, the Earl of Rochester, in The Libertine, an indie costarring John Malkovich and Samantha Morton."

Us Weekly 1/26/04 - pg 10 (also a pic of JD & V at BFCA)

US Weekly Mention, 2/9/04 - The title of the page is Busted! Red Carpet Offenders! (refering to the Golden Globes) and its on page 35. There's a picture of Johnny and Vanessa and underneath it it says... Devito: "Uh, we took your souvenir old-timey photo, now we need the costumes back."

I was watching E! News Live today, and at the end of the show they ran some clips about what to expect next week on the show. They started talking about the Vanity Fair Hollywood issue and they should a clip of Johnny when they were talking about who was in it. They mentioned Orlando, too, for anyone who is curious. I have no clue when the issue comes out, but I just thought I would let you guys know.

Johnny and Vanessa Mention in this week's US Weekly (2/2/04) - They were mentioned in the Fashion Police section (pg 74) with the picture of them at the Critics' Choice Awards. They always have these people make funny comments about the 'bad' fashioned people and this is what they said. Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis -
NOVICK: Man in black meets woman in sack.
DEVITO: See, he's such a big star that he has his own personal fortune teller.
SCIUTTO: Pirates of the Outlet Mall.
WOLF: Clearly they shop at 21 Chump Street.
HOWARD: Tell me, where is Carson Kressley? I demand answers!
ARQUETTE: It's official: Success and lots of money really can't buy you style.
MCKIM: The blind gangster and his guide gal.
KNOBLER: When yuppies and hippies collide...

Pictures in this Week's US Weekly (1/26/04) - First picture is on page 10 of him and Vanessa from the Critic's Choice Awards. I haven't seen this picture of them for some reason. Maybe I just didn't get a good look at all of them when they were posted! He has his arm around Vanessa's shoulders and she has her hand on his tummy. Very cute picture. Below it it says, "Critic's Choice nominee Johnny Depp ( with longtime gal Vanessa Paradis) lost graciously to Sean Penn." The next picture is on page 20. The page has a bunch of pictures of guys' hair Short and Long. There was a poll to go along with Johnny's hair asking "Which Way is Johnny Hotter (short or long hair)?" 60% said Short, 37% said long, and 3% said both. Underneath the pictures it says, "Johnny Depp has gone from James Dean slick (left, 1995) to no comb required (right, 2003). "I got sick of the responsibility of hair," he said.

bab - A new italian magazine about food and cooking, with an interview with J. dinning with family at restaurant Via Veneto. No interesting photos. just one from OUATIM. did you know he totally dislikes chocolate? or he can't eat beans or peas? or he can spend 400 dollars for a bottle of a real good wine? the mag is named: Elle a tavola #2.

The March issue of Spur magazine has some great photos of Johnny.

"One" magazine has a three page article on Johnny. You can view the magazine at Mag-Mart.

The 3/2004 issue of Roadshow mag has 2 beautiful photos of Johnny. I don't think the second one is new, but I can't remember if I have seen the first one somewhere else already.

A Japanese fan Moo read in a Japanese paper that a photo book for Dolce & Gabbana's works called "HOLLYWOOD" published Nov. 2003 had a photo of Johnny.

Masako posted on my board that she had found at Amazon a new book on Johnny that is going to be published in March. Johnny Depp (People in the News) by Kara Higgins.

The Empire Awards :
More awards fever as Empire announce their very own nominations for the best of 2003 in readiness for the ceremony on the 4th of February. As expected there's plenty of room to praise British talent and where else can you find the deserved recognition of the players in Return of the King such as Andy Serkis and Sean Astin. However it does highlight the distrurbing lack of homegrown movies, especially when the best British film category has to make do with Johnny English in its ranks...
Best Actor
Johnny Depp (Pirates)
Viggo Mortensen (Return of the King)
Hugh Jackman (X2)
Sean Astin (Return of the King)
Daniel Day-Lewis (Gangs of New York)

Per Bedford Today - Willy Wonka and the Biggleswade factory. Superstar Johnny Depp could be shooting scenes for the remake of a classic film in Biggleswade. It was first brought to the screen in 1971, when Gene Wilder played Willy Wonka.

Johnny Depp Tue Jan 6, 7:00 PM ET (Variety) From the moment Johnny Depp (news) makes his entrance in "Pirates of the Caribbean," confidently posed atop the mast of a sinking ship, there is no doubt that a unique and daring comic performance is unfolding on the screen. "That is one of the best entrances any character's ever had in any movie," says his co-star, Orlando Bloom (news). Bloom played young swordsmith Will Turner, who finds himself awed by Depp's deceptively dissolute but resourceful pirate captain, Jack Sparrow. Bloom wound up following Depp's lead as an actor just as Will follows Sparrow as a pirate. "I just played it like he's completely mad," Bloom says. "I used it as a character thing. I think that's how he intended it and that's how we made it work." Jack Sparrow had been written as a "swashbuckling, obvious proper hero," in Bloom's words, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer courted Depp from the outset. "I wanted to make sure the audience knew this was not a normal Disney movie, that it was something special, and Johnny's body of work will tell you that. (He) gives it a little spin, and that's what I wanted." Depp's spin was to turn Sparrow into Keith Richards (news) with sea legs. "He created this thing that was incredibly comic and witty," says Bloom. "What struck me was how courageous it was." Almost too courageous. "There were phone calls from the studio saying 'you can't do this,' " remembers Bloom, and Bruckheimer had to step in to calm Disney execs down. "(I said) 'It's going to be a unique picture and he's a unique actor and that's why you hire him.' " recalls Bruckheimer.

Pirates are the next bikers (from PM Gazette). Landlubbin', chopper-ridin' bad boys in black leather have been dethroned as America's rebel fantasy sweethearts in favor of cutlass-swinging, “arr”-muttering seaborne scoundrels. Of course, the prospect of hanging with real bikers or pirates is somewhat less appealing than carousing with Johnny Depp, buckled swash and all. But no matter. The real question now is: Is rum the new beer?

Year End rap ups in the http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/entertainment/movies/7619419.htm">Miami Hearld - Best argument for allowing your lead actor to experiment and improvise: Johnny Depp's amusingly fey sea bandit in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. AND Best use of computer-generated special effects you didn't realize were computer-generated: Johnny Depp's eyeless eye sockets in Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

I visited the public library today and browsed through their Empire (feb. 2004-issue) and found this noble (cute) gentelman so I took a photocopy home with me.

There's a new Danish magazin for ten agers out just now called Girls (yes, the English word "girls" even though that's not a Danish word) which had its first issue out on December 22, 2003. AND on the mag's front page beneath a picture of Britney Spears it has a smaller picture of Johnny and the text "Johnny Depp - gid man kunne få ham på dåse" which means "Johnny Depp - if only one could get him canned" ... come to think of it I am VERY glad one can't! Since what is in cans are dead ... So I prefer him alive and "on the hoof". Inside the mag on page 8 and 9 is a small article about Johnny with several smallish pictures Though nothing new in either text nor pics.

Savvy Scalliwag - Johnny mentioned on VH1 - Best Week Ever - I think it's the 'Thursday' episode - it just premiered to day - and they mentioned Johnny about the Golden Globes and 21 Jumpstreet and Oscar stuff. It was cool.

aimeePG -Oscar Odds + More - Sean Penn is favored to win Best Actor with 4/9 odds, followed by Bill Murray (3/1), Ben Kingsley (8/1), Johnny Depp (10/1) and Jude Law (18/1). Notes from all over - Academy Award nominee Johnny Depp did a better job of acting in “Pirates of the Caribbean” than most viewers realize. “He’s terribly afraid of heights,” says a source familiar with film’s production. “In some scenes he had to overcome it, some scenes they just had to shoot around it and accommodate his fear.” Depp’s rep didn’t return calls for comment, but according to published reports, Depp also has a morbid fear of clowns....There is also a yummy pic, teehee. All at MSNBC.

keddyjo - First-time nominee Johnny Depp said he was "grateful" for a Best Actor nomination for channeling Keith Richards in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. "But the most moving thing for me has been the response from the audiences, kiddies and adults alike," said Depp in a statement. "I'm really happy people like our movie." From E! Online. Reemi - Entire quote in USA Today - "I am very grateful and touched that members of the Academy have nominated me for the work in Pirates. It's an honor to be mentioned in the same breath with such talented actors. But, the most moving thing for me has been the response from the audience, kiddies and adults alike. I'm really happy people liked our movie." — Johnny Depp, best actor, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Reemi - Depp thoughts to Tyra's hair - The wacky, the wonderful and a few of the winners from last night's telecast. The Province - Monday, January 26, 2004
The award for biggest '80s bangs goes to model Tyra Banks. 7:57 p.m.: Atta boy Johnny! Hollywood golden boy and famous American expatriate Johnny Depp was wise enough to save his entrance to last night's Golden Globe Awards in Hollywood to the very last minute. The Pirates of the Caribbean hunk showed up just as they were rolling up the red carpet in front of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. "I had a ball making it," Depp told NBC's Lisa Ling of making his box office smash. "It was almost criminal." Ling didn't get much more out of Depp as his handlers cut her off mid-sentence and pulled the star away. Poor Lisa. Getting cut off like that, she must have thought she was back on the set of The View.

Possible cameo - Lutontoday.co.uk - John Malkovich, whose hit films include Con Air and In The Line of Fire, will be in High Town Road from Wednesday (Luton), shooting scenes from his latest flick Colour Me Kubrick. Director Brian Cook has plans to transform the former into an escort agency and the latter into The Blue Danube Adult Shop. The film tells the true story of small-time conman who talked his way into people's pockets by impersonating the famous and reclusive film director Stanley Kubrick. Other stars besides Malkovich, who will play the lead role, include Leslie Phillips, James Dreyfus and comic Jim Davidson. Hollywood heart-throb Johnny Depp and bad boy Sean Penn, both of whom are pals of the director, have been approached for cameo roles but are yet to confirm. It is thought the scenes shot in Luton will form the opening sequence of the film, which is due to hit screens in November.

Johnny Depp: The acting outlaw. Nice article from The BBC.

JD POTC Interview - This was an exclusive Underground Online interview.

It's nice to know that any relevant movie news related to, starring or somehow connected in the most minimal of ways to Johnny Depp, ends up in my inbox every other day. Aaaaaah, it's nice to have a man-crush and for the world to know about it. That said, I don't want to over-Depp anyone on the site, but seeing as he's already way ahead in GOLDEN SCHMOES nominations for Favorite Celebrity of the Year (natch!), I don't think you all will mind some pics from his upcoming movie, SECRET WINDOW, opening March 12, 2004. It looks like other movie site webmasters know about my creepy obsession as well, since Gary from Z Review sent me a head's up on the latest batch of pics that they nabbed over there. See a couple of them below or click to see them enlarged amongst their gallery. Viva la Depp! Houston Chronicle: "The most stylish male dresser: Johnny Depp, who wore a brown Dolce & Gabbana suit with a black open-neck shirt and brown fedora."

Palm Beach Post:"Best Dressed: Johnny Depp and his cool-daddy pimping hat" A Golden Globes Diary:"6 minutes to showtime. First Johnny Depp sighting. He's with Ling ("this might be one of the best days of my life"). Depp is with his Freedom, er, French girlfriend and appears to be wearing the hat that Brando wore in Guys and Dolls. Here's the deal. There are some actors that are so good that they don't need awards shows. There are some actors so powerful that they don't even have to go. Brando, DeNiro, and Penn don't even need to show up. Depp is just on the cusp and you can tell as he answers Ling's vacuous questions that he is swearing all future Golden Globes off right before our eyes. "Are you excited?" He wants to say, "This sucks, I wish I was back in my Paris apartment with my model girlfriend, smoking expensive brown cigarettes." He wants to say, "I need to not shave and wear a strange hat, just so I don't make all other men feel ugly." He wants to say, "F- you, Hollywood Foreign Press!" Ling: "Did you have so much fun making it?" And then something cool happens where one of his handlers, and he's surrounded by ten or so, actually pushes Ling out of the way to get Depp to his seat in time. Right there on live TV, the guy takes a not-too-upset-looking Depp into the show."

Some of you already know, and some don't that Nigel Parry was the photographer whose pics appeared in USA Weekend, The Sunday Times, and French Premiere mag. I became very curious because I kept seeing identical pictures of JD in that red shirt on a rooftop in Paris, but in some pics there are no white stripes on that shirt lol. Anyhoo, whilst I was surfing I came upon this website and it has a pic of JD from those photo shoots I had not seen yet.

Johnny Depp won the Male Standout Performance award for his swashbuckling antics in Pirates Of The Caribbean in a TV and E! Online poll of critics and movie-goers as reported at WTEV.com. PS Orlando was voted Actor of the Year, Keira came in second.

Per Google - JD was number 8 on the list of popular men in 2003 - based on Google' searches during the year. (Orlando was #3). Pirates was number 5 for popular movies in 2003 for Australian Google.

Excerpt from interview with Keira Knightley at TVGUIDE.com: "TVGO: You're marooned on an island with Johnny Depp. That sounds like many a woman's fantasy! What was he like to work with? Knightley: He's fantastic. I mean, I was a fan, obviously. He's an amazing actor. He really did take a risk in the way that he played Jack Sparrow, and there are very few actors that are willing to do that. So it was an absolute joy to work with him. All the scenes on the island were great fun. We had a real giggle!"

Excerpts from article at New Zealand Hearld about OUATIM - But it's because of high-definition that Rodriguez needed Johnny Depp on set for only eight days for Mexico, even though he was playing a major role. I interviewed Depp not long after the shoot when he was still high on the experience. "Rodriguez is a really good, really fun guy," he said. "Shooting on high-def was incredible! Robert was just shooting this stuff and you'd never hear 'Cut!'. You'd just keep doing this scene until he said, 'Do the scene again'. You never hear 'Reload!' - it was amazing." A proud host, Rodriguez believes it was the fact that Depp had so much fun making Mexico that he did Pirates of the Caribbean. "He doesn't usually do action, but I could tell he was starting to get into it," he recalls. "I said, 'I can tell you're starting to like doing action', and he said, 'You converted me!' [laughs] He was really getting into it - doing all his own stunts, like spinning around and shooting a guy in the head."

A Japanese fan Delphi let me know a nice wesite for the Ed Wood dvd with some film clips at Video Movies. johnnylubber reported - Digital Bits reporting possible Ed Wood DVD Delay - Well, here's disappointing news. Buena Vista's Ed Wood: Special Edition (previously scheduled for release on 2/3) has been indefinitely delayed... again. We've been receiving a lot of e-mails from our retail sources over the last 12 hours, and we've just heard official word from the studio. We have no idea why this might be happening, or when the title might be re-slated for release, but you can be sure we'll update you with anything we hear.

A Japanese fan JJ found a pic of Johnny and Vanessa in the Elle japon site. Click on the thumbnail pic of Vanessa at Elle site.

Here is George Romero's letter to Johnny about his upcoming film Diamond Dead.

Media Watch by JIM EDMINSTER 2004-01-21 - From the “Cowboys-Without-Cowgirls” file: The Chicago Sun-Times (1/15) welcomes us all to Gay 2004 where Brokeback Mountain, a movie adaptation of an Annie Proulx short story about the love of two young cowboys is casting its net over various gorgeous young (well, gorgeous and mostly young) actors— Viggo Mortensen, Brad Pit, Jude Law, Johnny Depp, Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger are in the running. Ang Lee will direct but skeptics are wondering if the Hollywood habit of “de-gaying” will occur. *There's more to the article, but no more mentions of JD*

Jim Carrey Tops 2003 Motion Picture Money-Making Poll. GROTON, Mass., Jan. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Jim Carrey has been voted the Top Money-Making Star of 2003 in Quigley Publishing Company's 71st Annual Top Ten Money-Making Stars Poll. Nicole Kidman, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress last year for "The Hours," and performed in "The Human Stain" and "Cold Mountain" in 2003, finished second to Carrey. Jack Nicholson ranked third overall this year and Tom Cruise came in fourth. Surprisingly, Tom Hanks only dropped to eighth place, even though he was not in a film released in 2003. The rest of the Top Ten in order were: Julia Roberts #5, Johnny Depp #6, Russell Crowe #7, Will Ferrell #9 and Renee Zellweger #10. This was the first year that Johnny Depp, Will Ferrell and Renee Zellweger finished in the Top Ten.

Tonight (2/1/04) there was a Johnny mention on the Vh1 show SuperSecret Movie Rules: Slashers for when he was in NOES. It's probably going to reair a lot this week, so keep your eyes peeled. Oh yeah, and some dude totaly stole Johnny's line in Freddy's Dead! The, "This is your brain. This is your Brain on drugs" one.

Tonight on Access Hollywood they were showing short clips of movie previews that were going to be shown during the Super Bowl. They mentioned SW. Nothing big, so you didn't miss anything.

MJ - Johnny was on Extra tonight (1/29/04).. They showed clips from Secret Window and a short interview with him Boy did he look good. Nice hat!!!! The movie looks AWESOME!!!!!!!!! I love the shot where he opens the door and says to the guy "do I know you"? Sounds like Captain Jack for a minute. The piece they did on him was good.. Showed stuff from POTC too..Reemi - More from Extra and Video Clip - Johnny Depp America's favorite pirate and most talked-about Oscar nominee Johnny Depp is back, and "Extra" got a sneak peek at his next big screen surprise. "Secret Window" is a suspense thriller in which Depp again finds himself playing a pirate of sorts. But this time, Depp is a successful author accused of plundering an idea from a psychopathic stalker, played by John Turturro. In a recent interview, Depp confessed how surprised he is by his own Hollywood success. He says, "I actually didn't expect the ride to keep going, I thought it would stop at a certain point. Luckily and miraculously I'm still here." On March 12th, Depp is back with a startling new persona in "Secret Window."

Johnny was nominated for an Oscar on 1/27/04. Dobro87 - was the first to tell us. Thanks! Here are some articles about this first time event for Johnny -

Roger Ebert at Chicago Sun Times:"Looking at the nominations again, my delight only increases. How perceptive of the Academy to know that Holly Hunter, not Evan Rachel Wood (as her daughter) gave the best performance in “thirteen.” What imagination to honor Johnny Depp, who transformed a pirate epic with his weird and daring performance (he said he was channeling Keith Richards). "
Star Tribune:Pirate booty Officially, Johnny Depp won his first nomination ever as best actor for "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl." But he also should be in the running as Writer's Best Friend. He turned his role into a flamboyant caricature that he described as a cross between rock star Keith Richards and cartoon skunk Pepe Le Pew.
Oscar Surprises GA:Probably the most pleasant surprise is the deserved nomination for the scenery-chewing performance of Johnny Depp as the mascara-visaged Captain Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," the kind of "popcorn" movie that is usually grossly overlooked by Oscar voters. He's likely to lose to Sean Penn for the aforementioned "Mystic River."
Times UK:"The really exciting nominations for me were 13-year-old Keisha Castle-Hughes in Whale Rider and Johnny Depp as Best Actor for his performance in Pirates of the Caribbean which goes to show you that Academy members have a sense of humour after all."
JoBlo's take:"Holy crap, Johnny Depp actually got nominated! Never in a million years would I expect this. I fully expected to sit here this morning and lambaste the Academy for not having the balls to nominate Johnny Depp just cause it was a "comedic" performance in a Jerry Bruckheimer film but I guess I can't say that! Kudos to anyone who voted for Johnny. Somewhere JoBlo just crapped his pants with excitement..."
Yahoo, click to see awesome blow up of one of my fav CJS pics:"Actor Johnny Depp is shown in a scene from the film 'Pirates of the Caribbean The Curse of the Black Pearl' in this undated publicity photograph. Depp received an Academy Award nomination for best performance by an actor in a leading role, for his work in the film, as nominations were announced in Beverly Hills, January 27, 2004. The awards will be presented February 29, 2004 from Hollywood and telecast worldwide."

JoJo1503 - NASCAR - While I was watching Access Hollywood tonight (1/29/04), they had that little scrolling thing at the bottom of the screen and it had someting about Johnny Depp starting one of the races in March.

So, whom has Winona loved the longest? Find out on Love Chain: Winona Ryder, premiering Wed., Jan. 7, at 9 p.m. on E!. Marquee heartthrob Johnny Depp first made Ryder's heart go pitter-patter when they shared the screen as lovebirds in Tim Burton's romantically tragic Edward Scissorhands. Ryder's performance was marked most notably by the long blonde wig she inexplicably sported. (The wig was notable because the pixie star is a natural blonde but went black for Lucas, and never went back--or so they say.) Depp and Ryder dated for just over three years, and he marked their engagement by tattooing "Winona Forever" on his arm. But they didn't make forever, exactly, and his tattoo now famously reads "Wino Forever." Which brings up an important Love Chain rule: Never get a permanent tat in honor of your beloved; you'll just jinx it. ~At the bottom of the page there's a link for pics. Johnny and Winona are only in the first one (I already looked through them). But you want to look at them all, by all means, go right ahead. She looked cute with all of her guy pals.

OTHER STUFF

Deppiss - In these days Tim Burton is in Rome, over here in Italy, to promote his new movie "Big Fish". I've just read what he said during the interview and there is a mantion about Johnny...he said "This year they have nomineted my dear friend Johnny Depp, and I'm so happy for him, even if in the States it seems that they have discovered him only right now. Johnnys always been a very good actor"

Moshpitmichi - Article about celebrities and drugs with some quotes from Johnny at Cannabis Culture.

Reemi - Rodriguez Says He's Got the Lead for Madman Source: Moviehole Thursday, January 29, 2004 - Moviehole chatted with filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and the Madman movie came up. Here's clips from the article, thanks to 'Clint'. And what about the recently mooted "Madman"? "Mad Man", we're writing "Mad Man" right now. Yes, Mike Hollard's going to come down, he just finished moving, he's coming in the next couple of weeks to come go through what we've been working up and see what he thinks." Rodriguez says it's early days for the casting, but there's a chance some of his former "Spy Kids" and "Desperado" cast might have parts. And the lead role? "I can say, but -- I know who but I can't say right now. We do have somebody." The site goes on to say that there's rumors it might be Johnny Depp, but Rodriguez didn't confirm that.

Melissa - I know it's early, and we'll all be preoccupied with the Oscars for the next month or so, but the Charlie Chaplin documentary that Johnny contributed to will air on TCM in March.
Here are the times:
Mar 03, 12:30 AM
Mar 03, 8:00 PM
Mar 31, 1:15 AM
It's exciting because if you didn't catch it in the theaters, the only other way to see this documentary is to buy the Chaplin DVD boxed set! So mark your calendars and set your VCRs!

Jess W. - German Filmmaker Tykwer Lured by 'Perfume', Wed Jan 14,12:07 AM ET Add Movies - Reuters to My Yahoo! BERLIN (Hollywood Reporter) - German director Tom Tykwer (news) ("Run Lola Run") is sniffing around "Perfume -- The Story of a Murderer," a thriller based on the best seller by Patrick Sueskind. The novel, which has sold about 12 million copies worldwide, tells the story of a boy born with an extraordinary sense of smell who becomes a murderer in order to distill the essence of beauty into a perfect perfume. Tykwer is working on a new version of the "Perfume" script, said Martin Moszkowicz, head of production at the film's German producer, Constantin Film. Moszkowicz added Tuesday that Constantin was "in talks" with Tykwer to direct but that nothing has been signed yet. Ridley Scott (news) was originally said to be attached to direct the epic. More recently, the names of Tim Burton (news) and Julian Schnabel (news) have been linked to the project, the latter as part of a package featuring star Johnny Depp (news), according to German media reports. Orlando Bloom (news), hot off "The Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Lord of the Rings" blockbusters, is believed to be at the top of Constantin's wish list to star in the project, but Moszkowicz said it was still too early to discuss casting. Reuters/Hollywood Reporter.

Mia - Good news for Depp fans in Surrey, UK (1/14/04): he is currently filming in Kingston! It is so great, although I probably won't get to meet him, but anyway... I heard this from Capital FM radio yesterday, (13/1/04), and apparently two fans sneaked onto the set, but got caught and sent out, and then they sneaked into his dressing room, but got caught again... Also, for anyone interested, Once Upon A Time in Mexico is coming out on VHS and DVD in the UK on 20 January.

bab - Release of POTC on dvd in italy: pirate J. is on the cover of two dvd magazines at least.

Kyoko - My friend Iku, who once sewed a beautiful Jack Sparrow's coat, recently completed Ichabod's coat. She says she is wearing it, though anyone around her isn't impressed with it at all. Take a look at her stunning work! (The color in pics are a little lighter than its actual color to show the coat's details.) She is now planning to sew Sands' western shirt.

lady jolie - Johnnys Inspiration to join him for POTC2 - On the entertainment news I watched today (on sky news active if you can get it!) they said keith richards is going to join the cast of POTC 2. Reemi - Monday 19th January 2004, Z Review: Pirates of the Caribbean 2 Update: UK tabloid The Sun has printed a very cool rumour todat, namely that Keith Richards is up for a role as wizened cut-throat pirate! Now if this is true it could be hilarious as it is pretty damned obvious that Depp based his character in the first one on Richards!

pissedoffpoet - Neverland release pushed back - According to a variety of online sources, Neverland's projected release date of October 8th has been pushed back two weeks to the 22nd. No explanation has been offered for the delay as of yet.

johnnylubber - The Utah Film Critics Society is proud to announce the winners of its second annual "Beehive" awards recognizing outstanding achievement in film.
BEST ACTOR:

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

katerpillar3 - In a UK interview with Geprge Clooney, and during a small portion they asked him about Oscar nominations: "I'll tell you what - I saw Pirates Of the Caribbean and I think Johnny Depp should be nominated. Jesus, it's a phenomenal performance. It's so ballsy. I'd put that up there with Billy Bob Thornton in Slingblade, in terms of somebody taking a huge risk in a film. Ballsy, man! And for him to play Keith Richards through an entire $100m film. Balls out! But he probably won't get nominated either."

pirates grl - A survey by Blockbuster Video says more than a third of men rated her [Angelina Jolie] most kissable. Women picked Ashton Kutcher and Johnny Depp.

Ashley - Yesterday, 1/17/01, i went to Disneyland and i was so excited because my friends and i wanted to look really cool, so we made I love Johny Depp tee shirts and on the back they said Pirates of the Caribbean. We were so excited when we got there and then we showed off our shirts and a lot of people came up to us and were like weve got some Johnny Depp fans here! and then there were other people that were like i love him more and me and my friends took turns screamin i dont see you wearing a Johnny Depp tee-shirt! We were in the line for Mattahorn Mountian when someone who works at Disneyland said hey Johnny Depp was just here and i was like oh i know in 2003 like during the summer and she was like no yesterday and the day before and the day before so we started talking to her and asking her questions about him. She finnally had to go but she said that he had just left the park at 10:00 this morning (at that time it was 11:00 in the morning) i was so mad. Then some other people that worked at disneyland came up to us when we were in line for splash mountain and told us the same thing.I wish i could have met him. But i figured if i was that close to meeting him then maybe someday i will meet him because he is such a kind person everyone says. He also signs almost everyones aughtograph all of the time.
