January 2004 #86

Hello Johnny Cyber Fans,

Happy New Year to everyone! Last year was quite a Johnny filled year so here's hoping this year is a repeat of that luck for his fans. :-) Here's the news from December -

IN THE PRESS

Nigel Goodall is currently updating his original 1999 biography of Johnny under the new title of What's Eating Johnny Depp. It will be in the slightly smaller paperback size format and retail at £7.99, will be revised throughout with new and updated chapters and picture spreads and a modified filmography, this time with US box-office grosses of all of Johnny's movies, miscellaneous appearances, awards etc. Whether it will contain an index is still uncertain. It will be published this June in the UK, and presumably be available in the US shortly after. To read more and view the new front cover visit Nigel's website at www.nigelgoodall.co.uk where you will also find an excerpt from his original Johnny and Winona biographies.

gerdie - At Blockbuster here in Canada, I picked up a free copy of "Inside Entertainment". It has Nicole Kidman on the cover, and it's the year end review issue. The reason I bring it up is because it has a gloriously beautiful full page pic of Johnny! I couldn't believe I got it for free!!! He's wearing a pinkish shirt, and a blackvest and sitting on a chair. There is a bed behind him! His right hand has a cigarette, and his left hand is down by his legs. (You can see the skull ring on it. He is hatless (seems like a rarity nowadays), and his hair has a chunk of blonde in it on the left side! It is beautiful.

Elsie - johnny is certainly well-represented in the arts and leisure section's year end wrap-up in the New York Times (12/28/03). beginning with a drawing of johnny as captain jack in a hirschfeldesque group composite cartoon of this year's highs and lows in the arts on the section's page one and continuing through a.o. scott singing praises for both johnny and pirates of the caribbean in his article on this year's films and including elvis mitchell naming potc number one on his year's top ten films list, johnny was certainly not forgotten by the times this year.

Vicki - There is a small article in the Star tab dated 1/6/04 about Johnny celebrating his 40th birthday at the Viper Room on 12/16 (belated party) with Iggy Pop and others. Party had a 40's theme and lasted until 4 a.m.

Mellisa - There is a fabulous picture of Johnny in the new issue of Cosmopolitan (January Issue). The Queer Eye for the Straight Guys picked an outfit out for Johnny and thanks to the magic of computer graphics he is modeling their fashion shadysparrow - In the Los Angeles Times (Sunday 12/21), in the first Calendar section, page 2 was a page spread about the year of the pirates. Cool article on POTC, a kids book, and other pirate stuff over this year. Included an old picture of Captian Jack with Will.

Monica - The Christmas Issue of the Dutch Nieuwe Revu magazine contains an article on Johnny. There are no new pictures. I saw two big B&W pics with the look from the Venice Film Festival 2002 (I think) and some small POTC pics.

Micdus - Johnny came in at #3 on Entertainment Weekly's list behind Clay and Reuben from American Idol at #2 and the Lord of the Rings cast at #1 (issue EW 2003 Year-End Special Dec 26, 2003/Jan 2. 2004 #743/#744). Here's the photos and the article transcribed by johnnylubber. The list was aired on Bravo 12/19 and Malkeyh1 had this to say about the show - He came in at number 3, right between rapper 50 cents and the American Idol guys. There was no interview, but there some really nice comments. The commentator talked about Captain Jack Sparrow, saying that a pirate villain can be a fairly typical role, but Johnny took it and made it his own. There was also some nice remarks from Cher, who said that she really liked him, and mentioned specifically his performance in Ed Wood. There was also some mention of the Stern magazine controversy, before the piece was wrapped up with the announcer saying that he was going to reprise his role as Jack Sparrow.

Arielle - the january cosmopolitan did an interesting hting where they took the heads of their favorite stars and put them on a different outfit. one of them is johnny. its very cute. sorry i cant be more descriptive, i only got a glimpse of it.

tinahe - Johnny's reaction to his Golden Globe Nomination - Here is what I find in Hollywood reporter, Dec. 19, 2003 - Best actor nominee Johnny Depp may not have been available to comment on his nomination, but "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" producer Jerry Bruckheimer spoke up for the press-shy star. "The nomination is so well-deserved," he said. "It was a daring performance, and he really took a character that had been written in a straight-ahead way and used his creativity to turn it into something special." Bruckheimer added that fans can look forward to seeing a lot more of Depp's memorable character because they are developing a pair of "Pirates" sequels that will likely shoot simultaneously in 2005.

Reemi -
"I've been lucky because I do regard myself as a slightly aging character and I've been able to be in scenes with delightful women, like Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, Salma Hayek, Goldie Hawn. ..... It's been a perk of the job. And the prettiest of all, of course, was Johnny Depp." — Actor Geoffrey Rush, on beauties with whom he has starred. Globe & Mail

John August Penning Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Source: The Hollywood Reporter Monday, December 15, 2003 - John August, who wrote the current Tim Burton film Big Fish, is reteaming with the director to write the script for Warner Bros. Pictures' Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Johnny Depp is attached to star in the remake of the 1971 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and the studio is keen on getting the project before cameras early next year. Scott Frank, Gwyn Lurie and Pamela Pettler previously wrote drafts of the "Charlie" script, but August is said to be starting from scratch by heading back to the original source material, the Roald Dahl classic novel. August also wrote the two "Charlie's Angels" films.

Monica -
Johnny as agent Sands on the cover of the Italian CULT FICTION magazine.

I read an interview with feminist author Germaine Greer (64) and found a quote about Johnny. Her latest work, called "The Boy", is a coffetable book with 206 illustrations of boys and an essay. This is the quote (from Dutch newspaper NRC Handlesblad, interview by Stine Jensen): "I follow now with interest Johnny Depp's career. He is a boy - because his name is Johnny and not John. He often wears make-up and he wears juwels. But how long will he be able to keep this up? My prediction is that the end of his beauty will be his death as a boy: he will become a second-rate actor, unless he will succeed in becoming a serious actor, that means, a man. The boy has to be destroyed." This is only a quote and isn't much enlightining out of context. I haven't seen her book. But I thought it was interesting to know that she follows Johnny's career. Maybe she has written about him in her book or has spoken more often about him in interviews.

kel - What my local paper said... Dang right!!! -
We said it a while back: This is Johnny Depp 's year. At 40, the dude, who was voted People mag's sexiest man alive, has earned E! TV's highest accolade: entertainer of the year. Depp took it in stride: "I want my kids and my grandkids someday to be able to go, 'Yeah, Pops, he really held it together, and he did the right thing.' " The actor, who says he based his "Pirates of the Caribbean" character on the Rolling Stones' craggy-faced, drug-and-booze-addled guitarist Keith Richards, beat out Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Colin Farrell and even the Govinator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, for the honor, which will be presented during an E! special Monday night.

Herfooness - Aus mag alert - There is a new TV Hits Poster Power magazine out and there is a cool Jack Sparrow poster in it. Now I finally have a Pirates poster to put on my wall.

Heather - There is a short article on Johnny in the December 15, 2003 'People' magazine as a follow up to his 'newly crowned sexiest man alive'. Lyn - In People magazine, there was an article about 40 year olds. One was Johnny Depp and when asked about how he felt about being 50 in the next ten years, he said something along the lines of: "Well, it would be nice to just drop off at some point and do some art or poetry, but I could also just sit there and kind of drool."

Here is the complete article - People's newly crowned Sexiest Man Alive greeted 40 with "a couple bottles of wine-very calm," he said earlier this year adding, "By the time you're in your late 30s, you're ready for it." While the younger Depp earned his bad-boy stripes via a famously trashed hotel room, today the eccentric actor "has become very much of a family man," says pal Thierry Klemeniuk, one of his business partners in the nightspot Man Ray. "It's really nice." The actor splits his time between a medieval-style house in L.A. and a $2 million villa in Plan-de-la-Tour, a village in the hills above Saint-Tropez, alongside French pop star Vanessa Paradis, 30, his girlfriend since 1998, and their children Lily-Rose, 4, and Jack, 20 months. French locals know him as a doting papa poule ("father hen"), which is just the way Depp likes it. "Kiddies should grow up in a very simple, calm environment, where everything is not about the next movie," he told ABC's Elizabeth Vargas last summer. And how might the actor, who is slated to star in a remake of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, greet turning 50? "You know, it might be nice to sort of drop off at some point and just go and write a book or paint," he has said. "Or you know, just kind of sit there and drool." On Fatherhood - "I think it's given me everything; it's revealed me. It's given me great strength, great perspective, great calm-and sleep deprivation."

Johnny features in this coming weekend's issue - USA Weekend – The Year in Photos - December 26-28 - The year in pictures. USA WEEKEND focuses on the best photo outtakes from this year's covers. "Johnny Depp was as cool as cool gets," even while posing on a six-inch-wide guardrail 200 feet above a sidewalk in France, photographer Nigel Parry says. "Talk about living on the edge! He's extraordinary, that guy." Here are some of the out take photos.(only one appears in the paper)

Reader responses in People to the Sexiest Man Alive article -
People,December 22, 2003 - Mailbag
Bravo! You've transcended surface beauty to select Johnny Depp as the Sexiest Man Alive! His childlike rebel spirit, deliberate character, beauty and poise make a woman's knees weak! Joanne Cacciatore Phoenix, Ariz.

Like many, I was delighted to see Johnny Depp chosen as the Sexiest Man Alive. He's not only incredibly handsome but charismatic and a devoted father. At 40, he's like a fine wine that only gets better with age. Lucy Wilcha Stroudsburg, Pa.

A 40-year-old actor who causes heart palpitations in a fortysomething mother as well as her daughters definitely deserves the title of Sexiest Man. I just settled an argument between my girls, 16 and 12, over who gets to keep this year's issue. Looks like I'll have to buy two more copies. Judy Dunlevy Mt. Holly Springs, Pa.

Thanks, PEOPLE magazine, for my Christmas gift this year: Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington and George Clooney. A woman couldn't ask for anything more. Maria Dent Chicago, Ill.

A big woo-hoo for including Clay Aiken. PEOPLE had the courage to admit that a wholesome, freckle-faced boy-next-door can be hot. Geeky and squeaky clean, Clay is definitely here to stay, reminding the world once again that it's hip to be square. Beth Werrell Finksburg, Md.

Help! My issue has come to me printed backwards. Colin Firth ended up on the last page and I'm certain he was meant to be on the cover. Please fix. Kit Shemas Sylvania, Ohio

Forget Ashton Kutcher and Justin Timberlake--I'd be more excited to see Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. Take the boys and bring on the real men. Christine O'Brien Munster, Ind.

How could you leave out Ben Affleck? I guess my dreams will have to suffice. Kelly Stanley Schenectady, N.Y.

Are you people crazy? Why would you choose as Sexiest Man an American who's anti-American, except when it comes to American dollars? Depp has criticized the United States and its citizens. Your judges must either be French or smoking the good stuff. Patti Moore Brunswick, Ohio

mellymel - Johnny will be featured in Rolling Stone's 2003 yearbook and Justin Timberlake is on the cover. I believe the issue hits newstands on Fri. Axl - I got mine last night at the Virgin Megastore in NYC. It is a good interview (with a pic of him from when he was promoting POTC -the same one used for the recent cover of People mag). Ironically he mentions an actor who over the past year has recently become one of my favs, Humphrey Bogart, and one of my fav films from him "In A Lonely Place"! I thought that was really wild! Anyway, here is the interview.

People Magazine Dec 29 issue called Best (and Worst) of 2003 - blue cover with Jennifer Aston and a few others. page 118 a full page picture of one we've seen already (johnnydeppfan.com/portrait12.htm the fifth little one across the top) with the following caption from an article labeled Best Comebacks Did you write them off when they lost their luster? Look who's shining brighter than ever:
Johnny Angel
Finally! After years of making movies that hardly anybody went to see. Johnny Depp starred in Pirates of the Caribbean, the Disney summer blockbuster that had entire families coming back for more. This year's Sexiest Man Alive did Captain Jack Sparrow his way--with a swagger nicked from Keith Richards--and he'll do it again for a 2005 sequel. Even in a ruffled shirt, says costar Orlando Bloom, "obviously, he's cool."

In Touch Weekly Dec 29, 2003 - page 56, 57 center of the pages in an article about Style : Same star, same old outfit. They have access to glamorous clothses, so why do these celebs wear the same thing again and again? There are four pics of JD dated June 19 & June 27 and August 23 & 25, 2003 in our beloved brown suede jacket with the following label : "Downtown Brown" and the following caption:"Johnny Depp is in his comfort zone with this brown jacket. 'He's being the regular guy, not the star,' says Cooper." also, on page 52 there is another pic of Johnny (johnnydeppfan.com/portrait12.htm -the first small pic) with the following from an article entitled Secret Celebrity Crushes, The stars reveal who they'd love to kiss under the mistletoe! Half of Hollywood's sweet on Johnny! Who doesn't have a crush on dreamy Johnny Depp? The superhot star of Pirates of the Caribbean has enought A-list admirers to land him a life-time of "booty". American Pie cutie Shannon Elizabeth, 30, is clamoring for a role opposite the sexy, dark-haired 40-year-old, and Jennifer Love Hewitt, 24, has also gone public with her affections. Most recently, Johnny's Once Upon a Time in Mexico co-star Eva Mendes, 25, confessed her true feelings. "He's one of the most beautiful men I've ever seen," Eva Said. "When I was a little girl, I actually had his posters on my wall. It was a total crush." Would it work? Maybe in Utah! But not a chance--Johnny's heart belongs to his starlet girlfriend (and the mother of his two children), Vanessa Paradis.

Johnny makes #1 on USA columnist list for 2003 - www.usatoday.com/life/columnist/popcandy/2003-12-17-pop-candy_x.htm
1. Johnny Depp. In a way, I hate to make Johnny the person of the year, since practically everyone else has declared the same thing. But is there anyone who caused such a stir in 2003? Furthermore, is there anyone who more deserving of such a commotion than Johnny? With Pirates of the Caribbean, the actor finally got his due. Until next year, ahoy.

The Hollywood Reporter Thursday, December 4, 2003 - Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, starring Johnny Depp, became the swashbuckler of home video Tuesday, topping 4 million combined DVD and VHS units sold through to consumers and rental stores during its first 24 hours on store shelves. While Disney executives declined comment on sales or rental numbers, several national retail video buyers predicted the double-disc "Pirates" DVD to perform on par with Disney/Pixar's animated Finding Nemo, which has become the top-selling DVD of the year and is a contender for best-selling home video of all time, a record that belongs to the original release of Disney's The Lion King, which sold approximately 32 million VHS units in 1995.

Total DVD mag UK December - Jack Sparrow on cover. anerje - It has a 2 page review of Pirates, and then a 5 page feature, with about 3 quotes from Johnny which don't seem new to me. Plus, lots of pix we've seen before.

tvguide.com interview of Keira - JD excerpt -
"TVGO: You're marooned on an island with Johnny Depp. That sounds like many a woman's fantasy! What was he like to work with?
Knightley: He's fantastic. I mean, I was a fan, obviously. He's an amazing actor. He really did take a risk in the way that he played Jack Sparrow, and there are very few actors that are willing to do that. So it was an absolute joy to work with him. All the scenes on the island were great fun. We had a real giggle!"

The Danish weekly magazine "Alt for damerne" (roughly translate by me as "Everything For The Ladies" claims on page 76-77 that Vanessa Paradis has style. I'll believe that with Johnny by her side. And shows on the two pages what they called "vintage dresses" - which turns out to be dresses like those wealthy ladies wore in the early thirties. To that they add a picture of Vanessa in just such a beautiful dress (and Johnny beside her ) with the caption: (tranlated by me) "Here is Vanessa Paradis with her most important piece of accessory - Johnny Depp"

Danish Film Guide - OUATIM - Yes, all written in the quotes below has probably already been mentioned in the international articles But a small free magazine here in Denmark called Film Guide mentions Once Upon A Time In Mexico because that movie has its premier here January 16, 2004. I only translated the part which has to do with Johnny though (since it was so nice ) and here it is:

(Interview with Robert Rodriguez at the Venice Film Festival)
Johnny Depp is the new man in Rodriguez' univerce. He was deeply impressed by the fact that his role was shot in nine days and so happy about participating that he begged for more work and got an extra role as a priest. (Rodriguez) Yes, I got two Depps for the price of one. Johnny is fantastic! The Sands character is my favorite in the story. The first I developed for the movie. He is corrupted and Interview with Robert Rodriguez at the Venice Film Festivalamoral - rotten to the core. At the end there is of course the bond between Sands and the boy which play with the public's feelings and one end up liking Sands. It is the exciting thing working with Johhny. No matter how much you try to make his character evil and mean Johnny ends up making him sympathetic. I don't think one can ever hate a Johnny Depp-role. And there are more praise for Depp which has to do with (Rodriguez') preferences in actors. (Rodriguez) Johnny brought a lot of tourist t-shirts because he meant that his character would be like a tourist in Mexico. I love it when actors bring something to the movie - clothes, make-up, props and so on. It sometimes feels to me like all the characters sound like me and then it is cool when an actor comes and make them into something special. That's why I often work with the same actors because I know what they can and what they bring to the movie. On this movie there was a special contribution from some of the actors ... (Rodriguez) I normally write the score while I shoot the movie ... and suddenly it dawned on me that several of the actors were actually also musicians so I asked them to make their character's tune. Johnny really got into the idea and I got a four sides composition with trumpets, percussion ect.

Oscar? That's a Laugh
Comedies typically are shut out at the awards shows. Even this year's unusually strong crop of comic condensers may have a tough time getting back. Two of the biggest hits of the year, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" and "Elf", were powered by knockout comic acting - Johnny Depp as a grunge pirate and Will Ferrell as the oversized elf. Their performances, like Bill Murray's in "Lost in Translation,"....[blah blah stuff]... excited critics and fans alike. Whether their work can translate into Oscars, however, is another matter entirely. For when it comes to comedies, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, it seems, just hasn't gotten the joke. Comic legends such as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Danny Kaye and Stan Laurel never won an acting Oscar, and current comedy heavyweights such as Mike Myers, Jim Cary and Eddie Murphy have been shut out. Still, in a year when laughter ruled the box office - six of the 10 top-grossing films so far this year are comedies - the studios are mounting campaigns for these performances Academy Awards or al least Golden Globes. [blah blah blah more stuff] Among the likely contenders for the Golden Globes and possibly the Oscars: [names of peeps and movies previously mentioned in the article aaaaannnndddd.....] Depp for his over-the-top portrayal of an eccentric pirate captain who's more Keith Richards than Douglas Fairbanks; [blah blah stuff on other movies] "Pirates of the Caribbean" producer Jerry Buckheimer is equally high on Depp."The role was originally written for a main-stream Burt Lancaster type," he says."But Johnny made it his own. Wearing make-up and walking with a stagger, he turned in an extraordinarily daring performance." [blah blah blah other stuff not about Johnny] How the odds stack up for these actors: [other people blah blah] Johnny Depp ("Pirates of the Caribbean') Upside: His performance was equal parts bravado and delirium. Never considered a comic actor, he shows us a different aspect of his talent. Downside: The movie, which has grossed close to $650 million worldwide, drew only mixed reviews, When it comes to comic acting awards, Oscar observers say, the picture must be great. [ It was great!!!!] Odds for Golden Globe nomination: good Oscar nomination? : A long shot [ <---- grrrrrrrr ] then it goes on about other movies.

Elijah Wood on Johnny - Tue 16 December, 2003 - Reuters UK
Wood said he respects the way Johnny Depp developed his career. Depp began as a teen idol of TV show "21 Jump Street" but transcended that to become a major movie star known for roles in movies that push creative bounds like "Edward Scissorhands" or "Ed Wood." "He does interesting work constantly and only seems to be interested in things because he's passionate about the role and the project, no matter how large or small it may be ... that's how I've always thought of myself," Wood said.

DEPP PLANS A RETURN TO DON QUIXOTE'S LA MANCHA - JOHNNY DEPP's success in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN looks set to bring his DON QUIXOTE dream back to life in 2004. TERRY GILLIAM movie THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE, which was to star Depp, sank without trace in 2000 when the project turned into a disaster with storms wrecking sets and money running out - the catastrophe even became the subject of quirky documentary LOST IN LA MANCHA. But, thanks to Depp's 2003 successes, which have seen him voted PEOPLE magazine's Sexiest Man Alive in America, Gilliam is keen to get Don Quixote chasing windmills again. Depp says, "The last time I talked to him (Gilliam), he seemed very optimistic that we could get it back on the road. "Terry came to visit me one day on the set of Pirates. He was looking at everything, all the giant sets, and he said, 'This is just great. I'm so pleased that you're selling out. "This can be a giant hit, and we can get Quixote back and running." From Channel 4.

Out of Hiding - JD at Ohio.com - The normally elusive Johnny Depp has become surprisingly accessible now that Oscar voting time is approaching. Screen Actors Guild members have been bombarded lately with e-mails inviting them to come to screenings to hear the usually anti-Hollywood star answer questions about Pirates of the Caribbean. As an added inducement, says MSN.com, SAG members are being offered free popcorn.

Interesting article called "Truly, madly, Depp-ly" at The Advocate.

Tim Burton article on Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory at DFW.com - excerpt
Bloodied but unbowed by the reaction to his "Planet of the Apes" remake, Burton has all but officially signed on to direct "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," a non-musical remake of "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" with Johnny Depp taking the role played by Gene Wilder in the 1971 film. Burton says his version would hew closer to Roald Dahl's beloved novel but that as with "Jason and the Giant Peach," a Dahl adaptation Burton produced, "there will be room for interpretation." "Willy Wonka" is one of those pictures that's like a great childhood memory, but then when you see it, it's not all that terrific. I think just having Johnny in the film gives it a different spin, but I've got a few ideas up my sleeve, too. "The only thing I'm worried about now is that I might be a little too mature, you know? God, I hope not. I don't want to have make 'Gandhi 2' or anything."

Big in 2003 - The Men (Johnny is number 1 again)- at Canada.com - excerpts:
1- 2003 was his year because . . . while Johnny Depp has long been a critical favourite, it took a swashbuckling smash to propel him to the top of the A-list. Pirates of the Caribbean would have been OK without him. But because of Johnny -- and his dazzling performance as Capt. Jack Sparrow -- Pirates is the second-highest-grossing movie of the year. And has made Johnny part of pop culture lore.
Big in '04?: Now that the doubloons are flying, Johnny will spend the year shooting Tim Burton's Willy Wonka and preparing the Pirates sequel.

Harris Poll Results on Fav Stars - biz.yahoo.com/prnews/031217/nyw148_1.html excerpts: Nine of the ten stars in this year's top-ten list were also in last year's list. The one change: Johnny Depp comes in at #10, displacing Sandra Bullock. Among all of the movie stars who made this top-ten list, only Johnny Depp had a major box office success thus far in 2003 (in Pirates of the Caribbean).

Johnny Depp: Clourophobia - abcnews.go.com/sections/Entertainment/WolfFiles/Wolf_Files-1.html excerpts: We've all got irrational fears. Most of us just don't have the money to afford 12 boxes of Kleenex like germ-phobic billionaire Howard Hughes. But in a time when celebrity obsession is running at an all-time high, it's interesting to note that some stars have obsessions even more bizarre than our own. 3. Johnny Depp: Clourophobia - A fear of clowns is no laughing matter, especially to Johnny Depp and Sean "P. Diddy" Combs. "Something about the painted face, the fake smile," Depp told reporters while promoting Sleepy Hollow. "There always seemed to be a darkness lurking just under the surface, a potential for real evil." Combs is also said to suffer from clourophobia. But he has repeatedly denied that his performance contracts call for a "no clown" clause, perhaps because it doesn't fit his bad-boy image. Several years ago, Depp purchased a painting by John Wayne Gacy, the children's clown turned serial killer who tortured and killed 33 boys and young men. The painting was a self-portrait of Gacy as "Pogo the Clown." "They told me when I got it that the proceeds went to a charity or to the victims' families or something, but I found out that wasn't the case," Depp told the San Francisco Examiner. Depp still finds clowns vexing. "Something must have happened when I was a kid," he recently told Entertainment Weekly.

Broadcast Film Critics Association's Critics' Choice Awards news at E Online. Joining Depp, Penn and Murray in the Best Actor race are Master and Commander's Crowe and House of Sand & Fog's Ben Kingsley. Representing for Best Actress alongside Morton are Jennifer Connelly for House of Sand & Fog, Diane Keaton for Something's Gotta Give, Nicole Kidman for Cold Mountain, Charlize Theron for Monster and Naomi Watts for 21 Grams.

Orlando Bloom offers a tidbit about POTC 2 at Action Adventure.com
And Pirates of the Caribbean 2? - "Yeah, I signed up to do part two, so I’ll be doing that. Do I know anything about it? Nothing at all, man. I know that Ted and Terry are writing it, the same guys who wrote the first one. And I know that Gore [Verbinski] is going to direct it and I know that Johnny will do it, and Keira will do it, and I’ll be doing it, and that’s all I know. I think we’re going to shoot January next year."

Depp & Quaid Eyed for Richard Petty Biopic? - Coming Soon.com - "Film Rotation has an interesting bit on a Richard Petty biopic that John O'Hurley is producing...As I was driving home from work this evening I caught an interview on Real Radio (a local FM talk-radio station here in Orlando) with John O'Hurley (who's claim to fame is playing Elaine's boss on Seinfeld) in which he scooped on the cast for a film he is producing based on the life of legendary race car driver Richard Petty. The frontrunner's to play Petty? Dennis Quaid and Johnny Depp. He added his hope was that Depp would get the part as he has the "hot-hand" lately and would bring an edginess to the role." and from the source Film Rotation (a pic on that page). Film Rot - excerpts: With roles already in the works for Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel, The Rum Diary and Tim Burton's Willy Wonka remake, it looks like Depp will have no shortage of opportunities any time soon. The Richard Petty biopic is scheduled to start filming sometime between early 2004 and spring of 2005.

On the block: bare-chested Johnny Depp - New York Post - excerpts: December 12, 2003 -- THE show is called "Eros" and the pictures for sale at the International Center of Photography's benefit auction have lust written all over them. Not surprisingly, many of them turned their lenses on the stars. Timothy White shot a scantily clad, dazed-looking Liza Minnelli sandwiched between two pudgy, tattooed men. Patrick Demarchelier caught a bare-chested Johnny Depp. The photos will be on view to the public at the auction house of Phillips, de Pury & Luxembourg, at 450 W. 15th St., between Ninth and 10th avenues, today, tomorrow and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. Monday night's (12/15) auction is by invitation only; proceeds benefit the ICP's educational and outreach programs. To place an absentee bid, call (212) 857-0031.

At Coming Soon there is possible word on the subtitle for Pirates of the Caribbean 2, which in turn gives us possible word on the sequel's story.

An anonymous scooper contacted us (Coming Soon) today with what they claim might be the working title for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 2. "I work for [removed] from Fantasy II F/X in Burbank, Ca," writes our tipster. "I can't give you my name. I can tell you this, I just saw some composite artwork for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: TREASURES OF THE LOST ABYSS I'm not sure if that's just the working title or not." Their source says the 'Abyss' in the title refers to the first pirate ship that sailed in the Caribbean. So will the gang be on the hunt for this treasure, or perhaps they will have to keep other pirates from getting it? Stay tuned!

and from Cinescape -
Well, since the subtitle of the first PIRATES film was THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, and that was the name of Jack Sparrow's ship, it stands to reason that Disney may be thinking of using another pirate vessel in the title of the second film. But what's the Abyss and who owns it? "The Lost 'ABYSS' is in references to the first pirate ship that sailed in the caribbean," explains the spy. "Sorry, that's all I know at this time. I have no information about the script. Disney had a rep here with the artwork. Very hush hush!" So what did the artwork look like? Ah, that part we just don't know, matey. [A yo-ho-ho to our anonymous poppet for sending the tip in.]

Just some gossip from TV Guide.com, but what the heck. "Since it stands to reason that the PYTs of Fox's The O.C. top most of America's most-wanted boy- and girlfriends lists, you'd think that the cast could get anyone and everyone they fancy. But it ain't necessarily so, Rachel Bilson sadly informs TV Guide Online. "My crushes are kind of like out of reach... unless you can tell Johnny Depp to forget the girlfriend and the kid!"Consider the Pirates of the Caribbean star's booty officially called, Rachel! In the meantime, the 22-year-old cutie can content herself with the knowledge that, wish though she may to be meeting Gilbert Grape, she already has a beau of her own. "

Great new photos from Secret Window at Joblo.com. Here is the text - People Magazine recently named Johnny Deep it's Sexiest Man Alive and our own JoBlo has had Mr. Depp atop his sexiest men list since "21 Jump Street." Well he and the readers of People will be happy to hear about Johnny's next project, the thriller SECRET WINDOW. The film, based upon the novella "Secret Window, Secret Garden" by Stephen King, follows an author tormented by a psycho (John Turturro) who claims he ripped off his stories. Maria Bello (currently taking it all off in THE COOLER), Charles S. Dutton and Timothy Hutton co-star. The film was written and directed by David Keopp who's last (and first) directorial effort was the underlooked STIR OF ECHOES. It's not ready for theaters until April of next year, but we here at JoBlo.com have your first look at two stills from the film. Certainly sets the creepy mood, don't it? The King story wasn't all that great and the ending will seem familiar but with two leads in Depp and Turturro (who can play a mean ass bad guy) and Keopp behind the camera (putting his work writing SPIDER-MAN aside), I think we'll have a nice, effective thriller come April for our man JoBlo.

TELEVISION

MacFluff - UK True Hollywood Story - E! is advertising this for 4 January at 8pm.

WST - i was surfing the channels and yesterday evening (12/17) arrived at TMF (Belgium) with the program moviesnacks and they had a small segment on the potc dvd with some soundbites from orlando, johnny and keira. johnny mentioned how he thought of his character as a kind of organism who could change himself as needed or wanted (not exact quote). and he told something else but the excitement of seeing him on screen wiped it from my memory. i think this program gets repeated somewhere this weekend. i don't know when, check your guides.

Starlight456 -
E! News Live Year in Review - I've seen the previews for this and they've shown clips of Pirates of the Caribbean with our beloved Jack... er, uh, Captain Jack Sparrow. It airs this Sunday, December 21st at 10 pm on E! It will also encore on:
Thursday, December 25th (Xmas!) at 12 pm (NOON),
Friday, December 26th at 7 pm, and on
Saturday, December 27th at 7 am.
I've checked the website, and they said they'd talk about Keira Knightley, so they'll definitely talk about pirates. Watch the commercials on E! because they show Pirate Johnny a few times.

Keira, Pirates, POTC2 (briefly) on Access Hollywood - I was watching Access Hollywood today (Tuesday, December 16th), and they started talking about Keira Knightly and xmas gifts. She was jokingly talking about this HUGE, and I mean HUGE, diamond ring for the "bargain" price of $2.4 million. Haha... of course she started laughing afterwards. Anyhow, they started talking about how they've signed on to do POTC2. Keira said she was excited about it. She then said, "[Johnny's] a sexy man, sexy pirate." They showed clips from the making of the first POTC. It was cute; they showed some of him and Keira on the island and some of him and will when they fight in the blacksmith place. They also showed random shots of him struttin' his shtuff across the screen. It was very cute... then they mentioned how he was named People's sexiest man. Keira congratulated him. I forget exactly what she said but she said something like "Well done, Johnny."

Emma - Friday, Dec 12, 2003 - Johnny Depp named E! Entertainment Television's entertainer of the year
NEW YORK (AP) - Piracy was lucrative work for Johnny Depp this year: E! Entertainment Television named the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl star as its entertainer of the year. The network bestows the award in a special on Monday at 9 p.m. ET. Justin Timberlake, Beyonce Knowles, Colin Farrell, Will Ferrell, Queen Latifah and Arnold Schwarzenegger are among the other celebrities that E! found particularly intriguing this year. Depp, 40, based his character, Capt. Jack Sparrow, on Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. "I want my kids and my grandkids someday to be able to go, 'Yeah, Pops, he really held it together and he did the right thing," Depp told E! "He didn't stray from the path, and he didn't sell out and go for the big dough early on or anything. I would be very, very proud if they felt that."

Here is a transcript of the E! Entertainer Award Show (Johnny part).

Ok so here's the transcript of what they said on A&E's Biography countdown of the top 10 to watch. Mind you, JD was not part of this countdown but he was apparently the winner of a newsweek.com & usa today and A&E viewer poll for Greatest Comeback. They played a short segment with many clips of POTC, sadly no OUATIM mention.A&E Narrator:
In POTC, this treasured actor swashbuckled his way to box office gold. [clip of Jack Sparrow saying, "I may have deserved that"]
Ann Oldenberg USA Today: For a lot of people, they remember JD from 21JS, ES, or B&J. But then there were a lot of years when only real JD fans I think kept up with what he was doing. So this year when he came back in POTC in such a big way it was a major comeback for him.
fan quote: For my generation he wasnt gone so much because we sit and watch reruns of every movie to this day. Ann continues: The character in this movie that was so popular; he brought his own special mark to it. I think he really does what he wants to do"

"Other interesting changes include the addition of hot ticket Johnny Depp to the Favorite Motion Picture Actor list manned by Gibson and Denzel Washington. The move nudges out longtime fave Tom Hanks (though he gets a special nod alongside Bill Cosby and Clint Eastwood as Favorite All-Time Entertainer). "

Los Angeles, Dec 15, 2003 - Mega star Johnny Depp brightens up the day of a homeless man on Sunset Drive in los Angeles. According to the homeless man he approached Johnny who was the passenger in a black suv asking for money to feed himself. Johnny who apologised saying he did not have any money turned around and asked his driver to loan him 50 dollars which he then gave to the homeless man. Johnny was on the way back to his Hollywood mansion after a business lunch at trendy Pinot restaurant in the San Fernando valley.

More praise for Johnny at SMH.com
In Pirates of the Caribbean, just about any scene involving Johnny Depp was a GIMME candidate. Variety recently published this commentary from screenwriter William Goldman (of The Princess Bride and Butch Cassidy fame): "I thought he was brilliant, and I couldn't stop smiling at the thought of all the studio suits who must have gone just nuts during dailies about Johnny being so over the top, getting on their cell phones in mild hysteria bombarding the set with pleas to please bring it down!" ps. this column is giving out it's Great Interesting Moments in Movie Entertainment awards (the GIMMEs) for 2003. Also, at Animationa Artist - The Washington, DC Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) has named and Pirates of the Caribbean Best Guilty Pleasure.

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 9, 2003--"PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL," one of this year's top grossing films, has gone on to sell 11 million DVD and VHS units in its first week of sales, becoming the largest opening week live-action home entertainment title in history.

Found this information on POTC in an article in USA Today 12/4/03 - Orlando Bloom, who is signed to shoot Pirates of the Caribbean 2 in January 2005.

Keith Richards interview at The Guardian - Excerpt - "Yet with his [Keith Richard's] fish-hooks and amulets dangling bizarrely from his hair, he does look every inch the rock'n'roll buccaneer, and you can see exactly why Johnny Depp chose to model his character in Pirates of the Caribbean on the Stones' guitar-slinger. Richards enjoyed the portrayal and reveals that he recently had dinner with Depp. "He paid. Which only seemed right under the circumstances." "Perhaps it's the talk of Johnny Depp and pirates. But Richards is clearly much taken with this nautical metaphor and the idea of the Stones as salty old sea dogs. "One expects some storms and some choppy waters. But it's like we've now gone over the Equator," he enthuses. "We're Magellan. Or Sir Frankie Drake. I was hoping for that, and miraculously we've got there through some rough old seas."
