August 2003 #81

Hello Johnny Cyber Fans,

Here is the news that I gathered last month during the launch of Pirates of the Caribbean. I want to apologize in advance if I missed anything or mis-reported any of the news. If you find that I missed news that you furnished or need to make corrections, please email me at depfan@comcast.net. I hope you enjoy this long letter.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

Many of the fans reported that POTC made $70.4 million since the Wednesday opening through Sunday. The weekend box office total was $46.4.

A great interview from the New York Post.

Keira's funny comment in the New York Daily News -
NOBODY EVER said piracy was pretty. Actress Keira Knightley said shooting "Pirates of the Caribbean" in the sweltering tropics left her co-stars Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom "very dirty a lot of the time, and rather smelly. The B.O. was a problem," the 20-year-old beauty told our Sean Daly. Which of the actors ranked ranker? "I wouldn't like to say," she said. "They both smell like sweet flowers"

Article about the making of POTC at MSN Entertainment

Just read that Johnny will be in the POTC sequel. He's never been in a sequel to a movie, so I'm sure this will be a change for him. I'm sure he'll enjoy it though. This will be Orlando's first sequel too even though he's been in all 3 "LOTR" movies, but those were all filmed at once, so he doesn't have to become that character again after an amount of time. nsyncgrrl45 - From EOnline's first look... YO-HO, YO-HO: Disney planning to make a sequel to its summer hit Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, having already signed sequel deals with stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, as well as producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski. Emma found more on the sequelat Reuters.

Article about POTC at E! Online.

Johnny Depp: "Take a Picture of My Kids and Watch Out"
Movie hunk Johnny Depp has issued an angry warning to intrusive photographers - take a picture of my kids and "it could get very ugly". The Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl star understands why the paparazzi might want his picture - or that of his sexy French wife Vanessa Paradis - but draws the line when it comes to his children. Johnny, 40, says, "We get the occasional paparazzi and I figure it this way - if you're going to get my family, just bring a long lens. Because if I am able to get my hands on you, it could get very ugly. I don't care if they take my photograph, although I don't know why anyone needs another picture of me, there are plenty out there. And I don't care if they take Vanessa's photograph - we're adults." (at People News.)

Small article about the great reviews being received by POTC at IMDB Studio Brief.

I was just watching CNN and they did a review of "POTC" and said that it was great. They said that it was probably one of the best pirate movies since Errol Flynn did one. They made a joke that Johnny wears a lot of make-up in the movie.

Johnny has upset the NY Post

AU REVOIR, STINKY JOHNNY IF "Pirates of the Caribbean" star Johnny Depp's kids want to smoke pot when they're older, they can count on dad to score it for them. "Out on the street, you never know what you're getting," Depp (right) tells next month's GQ, explaining his plans to supply his two children by singer Vanessa Paradis with quality pot untainted by PCP. "Suddenly two days later you're beating yourself in the head with a tennis racquet, wearing a towel, quoting Poe. You don't want that for your kid." Depp calls pal River Phoenix's drug overdose, which he witnessed several years ago, "a nightmare you never recover from" and says his new family helped him jettison his former "dumb-ass," "self-centered [bleep]" persona. And Depp declares he now plans to make Paris his permanent home because the United States "mortifies" him with its "childish" "freedom fries" and "freedom toast." Considering the vagabond looks and smells that Depp - dubbed "Uncle Stinky" by his pals - has been sporting, we say "good riddance.

A devilish grin and the deep blue sea
By Thomas K. Arnold, special for http://www.usatoday.com/life/2003-07-21-depp_x.htm USA TODAY

Moviegoers are buzzing about the revivals of two scalawags: pirates and Johnny Depp. At 40, the onetime Hollywood bad boy is this month's It boy. He has given what many say is a career-defining performance in Pirates of the Caribbean, which hit $133 million in two weeks.
Many are attributing the film's appeal to his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow, the Rodney Dangerfield of piratedom. Not only has it given the long-dormant pirate genre a boost, but it's also generating awards buzz for iconoclast Depp. "I love him," says Jennifer Halperin, 27, a publications coordinator in Orange, Calif. "His acting, his looks. He's sexy." Sandra Slankard, 42, a preschool teacher from Oceanside, Calif., says, "He takes on each character he is supposed to play, and you believe him."
Adds Marivi Mullen, 37, a mother of two from Carlsbad, Calif.: "Johnny Depp looks good, even with eyeliner. I think he stole the show, at 40 years old."
She liked the movie, too. "It made pirates come alive for modern kids."
Max Dana, 9, also of Carlsbad, Calif., especially liked Depp. "He's funny, and he's crazy." Already, Disney is talking about a sequel with Depp and co-stars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. Further proof that the glitter in this movie isn't just in Depp's teeth, which he capped for the role: •Retailers expect Disney to release Pirates of the Caribbean on DVD in December with a treasure chest of extras. •On eBay, an autographed Pirates photo of Depp sold for $404.
•DVD sales of his movies are up. Sales of From Hell, a 2001 thriller about Jack the Ripper in which Depp plays an opium-smoking police inspector, are up 73% over the pre-Pirates week. Edward Scissorhands (1990) sales are up 23%. Could Depp's performance sway Oscar voters to consider a comedic portrayal?
Critics Roger Ebert and Leonard Maltin, both fans of Depp's performance, are doubtful. "Three reasons," Ebert says. "It's a summer movie, it's a comedy, and then there's the (motion picture) academy's lack of appreciation of irony."
But Tom O'Neil, host of awards site GoldDerby.com, says Depp has Golden Globe potential: He has been nominated three times for comedic roles.

Elsie - what kind of movies do pirates like best? Ones that are rated arrrrrrrr!

That joke actually appears in sunday's new york times. yes, it's true. the times actually has a joke in it. and, it's a pirate joke. the times has an article entitled "pirate movies weren't always shipwrecks" in this week's arts and leisure section, pegged to the opening of potc this wednesday. it is not a review, the review won't run until opening day, but is a feature story about the history of pirates in the movies. it's about how the genre was at one time one of the best ways to see spectacular film making filled with fascinating stories and characters, some fictional and some quite real . there are anecdotal references to and quotes from some of the greatest pirate movies of all time. it discusses: robert newton, who played both long john silver in "treasure island" and the title character in "blackbeard the pirate." and tyrone power , whose 'jamie boy' waring is pitted against the notorious capt. sir henry morgan in "the black swan" and charles laughton as the infamous "captain kidd." and of course, the unforgettable errol flyn as the surgeon-turned-outlaw "captain blood." the article suggests that "pirates of the caribbean" has a good chance to be the first swashbuckler in decades that won't end up sleeping with the sharks at the bottom of the cold, cold sea, accomplished by combining a reliable, imaginative producing/directing team with creative writers and a "particularly impressive cast" lead by our johnny . the article tells us that we can take a hint from disney itself. it tells us that the studio must have a lot of faith in this film to be willing to attach the disney name to a PG-13 film for the first time ever. go, johnny, go!!!!!!! Disney also took out a full 2-page color ad for the film in the same paper.

Alex - I found a great new website, Cine Movies, to go to if you want to see some new clips and pics. I dunno how new they are but they were very new to me. They were not on the POTC offical site last time I checked.

Melissa - I just saw a new commercial for Pirates of the Caribbean. At the end of it, they mentioned movie-related auctions at eBay. There are only two things listed there now, but one is a signed poster. I hope this is new news! Go to www.disneyauctions.com to check it out.

Chris Huntington - Johnny (as Jack Sparrow) is on the cover of Fotorama. Inside the magazine there are a lot of new photos of him which I hadn't seen before.

JohnnysGurlalex34 - When going to see POTC, you need to stay until the end of the credits . . . theres a surprise-DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER UNLESS YOU WANT TO READ THE SPOILER . . . Captain Barnossa's monkey opens the chest of treasure and turns into a skeleton, leaving the movie open for a sqeuel!

Jeannette - The Video Game for POTC is released on X Box already and will be released on PS2 in either August or September. Just in case anybody else wanted to know.

Lyndz -

disney makin sequel to potc!! Walt Disney Co. are to start production on Pirates of the Caribbean sequel, this due to the movies success at the box office this week, according to Reuters.Talks are taking place with the writers about developing storylines for the sequel, "I've got two more stories to tell about (pirate captain) Jack Sparrow," writer Ted Elliot said. In interviews, Johnny Depp expressed a willingness to take part in a sequel and said making the movie was more than just fun."It was criminal. It was a blast," he said.

POTC REVIEWS

Vicki - Exceptional review by Harry at Ain't It Cool News.

Reemi - Review at OSC News Gazette

Legolas31 - Review of POTC at E! Online.

Meeps - New York Times love the POTC - and Johnny Just "listen" to this:
Quote:
The movie belongs to Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow the pirate, a rapscallion who's as woozy as someone who has endured much too much time on a roller coaster. Mr. Depp doesn't get the opportunity to display his gift for comedy often, and his mellow, dizzied underplaying here is a balm, an antidote to the raucous battles and swashbuckling. Gargling his consonants before spitting them out, Mr. Depp's pirate suggests a man who has spent either a great deal of time with Keith Richards after a tour of the Rebel Yell factory, or a man who has spent a great deal of time watching Mike Myers do his Keith Richards impression. Either way, festooned with dreadlocks and braids in his hair and beard, and wearing enough industrial-strength mascara to indicate that Captain Jack was probably influenced by another King of the Wild Frontier — Adam Ant — Mr. Depp offers a ratty, bedeviled turn that keeps the picture in motion during that extended period when there's not much plot involved.

Battle At The Box Office - I was just switching through the channels and got to CNN and they were talking to a film critic about "POTC" and "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen". They showed clips of both movies. The reviewer said that "POTC" was a better movie and it would make more than "TLOEG". He also said that he didn't think very many good movies were coming out this summer, but that he thought "POTC" would do better than "TLOEG". He also said that two of his favorite movies were "Finding Nemo" and "Bruce Almighty".

On HBO, they're showing a 2-3 minute behind the scenes special of "POTC". The special is called "Now In Theatres". It's on in between movies and stuff. They interview Johnny and Keira and some others

OK mag for 15 July is now on the shelves. Inside, there is a small free mag, Hot Stars. On page 11 of Hot Stars, there is a small pic of Johnny, showing his gold teeth. There's a short article underneath, referring to him being stopped at an airport recently and security finding his stuffed articles. Nothing new, but I'm sure people in the UK will want to check it out for themselves.

Secret Window is filming at Lake Sacacomie for the next three weeks.
rough translation from Radio-Canada
29 July 2003
The shooting of scenes of the film “Secret window” continues until mid-August at the the Saccacomie hotel in Saint-Alexis-des-Monts. It is the first time that this town welcomes an American film crew. The actor Johnny Depp is in the cast. The greatest secrecy surrounds this film production, and the access to the Saccacomie hotel is forbidden to the public. The town authorities believe that this shoot will generate economic repercussions of several thousand dollars for Saint-Alexis.

A Japanese fan Ayako let us know Johnny is on the cover of the 9/2003 issue of a Japanese entertainment mag "L magazine," which is sold only in Kansai area far from my place. Vicki -

The USA Weekend magazine for 7/4-6 had Johnny on the cover as well as a nice article and inside pictures.

Johnny will be on the cover of the August GQ magazine. Rox reported that it would be out on the news stands 7/22/03.

I finally took some time to do a magazine hunt and here are the results -
US Magazine - 7/21/03 - Article about Johnny's move to France, photo of Johnny signing autograph at POTC premiere, Photo of Jack and Will with POTC review (Jack looking through spy glass), and photo of Johnny at Bristol in the Fashion Police section (none of the critics liked his outfit).
Creative Screenwriting - Volume 10, #4 - Photo from POTC on cover (not jack) large photo inside of Jack on the mast and interview with the screen writers.
Sci Fi - August/03 - Article about POTC, small ordinary photo of Jack and Will and Filmography of Johnny.
Disney Adventures - Summer - Comic strip of POTC. Great likeness of Johnny. (I believe this is the one Yoli told us about)
Disney Adventures - August/03 - Another comic strip of POTC.
Globe Magazine - 7/22/03 - Color photo of Johnny the same as the one I posted from the New York Daily News and gossip bit about the piranhas found in his bag at a Florida airport (Letterman show quote).
The National Enquirer - 7/22/03 - Photo from premiere in Fashion Victim of the Week. Also picture of Jack on the mast.
Heat - 7/11/03 - Another photo of my good friend Isa and Johnny at Bristol.
Elle - August - Keira on the cover. Quote from Johnny about her - "Keira has enough understanding of just pure bullshit to be able to step back and let the hits go past her. She's sweet as can be--yet she can step into the ring and atttack. She's a lot better off than I was back then."
Entertainment Weekly - 7/18/03 - First, Johnny should have been on the cover, ok...I'm done venting - There is a photo of Johnny and Gilliam from LILM, a not-so-good review of POTC and a Track Record report re his movie box office totals.

A friend just told me in email that Johnny is also in People magazine in an article and some photos. I haven't seen that one yet. JohnnyD4Leo - It's on stands now so go get it! I didn't know there was an article in it about him. My mom just bought it for me cuz she knows how much i like People's Magazine. They have a little time line of him and his unique hats!

Makeup Artists issue #43 - Article about the makeup artists for POTC and some great pictures from the movie. Nothing new but there are four pictures with Johnny that are at least 1/2 page large. WST - http://www.makeupmag.com/thisissue.htm

American Cinematographer 8/03- Article about the filming of POTC but no great pictures of Johnny. boohoo

US magazine 8/4 - Picture of Johnny from the premiere in the Fashion Police section. None of the fashion critics liked his look most comparing his look to a mobster. Well... haha

Also, I think this has been mentioned by last week's US mag had two small pictures of Johnny. Nothing special.

USA Today 7/7/03, Keira and Orlando
There are articles/interviews with Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley in the USA Today newspaper Life Section today. Orlando gets a huge photo on the front page and Keira a nice photo on page 2. Keira says this about Johnny -
Her favorite scene was being marooned on an island with Depp. "It was like The War of the Roses," she says. "Johnny is incredible, and his performance takes Pirates to another level." On a personal note, she adds: "My mom thinks he's very well brought up."
Orlando says this about Johnny -
"He's so courageous in how he develops a character and puts himself out there," he says. "He's not afraid to fall on his face".
Orlando also disses the Fan pages dedicated to him on the web claiming much misinformation on the sites. His mother suggests that he start a official site but he feels his work can do the talking.

Aries - On today's Italian newspaper La Repubblica there is a small but sweet interview to Johnny. They talk about POTC and his short movie Paris je t'aime. He says he will allow Lily-Rose to watch POTC even if it's PG rated because she already watched The wizard of Oz and enjoyed it very much, while he watched it when he was 17 years old and was totally scared He adds: today's kids are much more ahead.

Legolas31 - This may have been already posted, but in the new Entertainment Weekly (with Tobey Maguire on the front) there's a two page article about Johnny and POTC. It's titled "Box Office Buccaneer". It talks about how POTC is Johnny's biggest box office movie and stuff. There's a big picture of Johnny as Jack Sparrow, plus a picture of Johnny, Orlando, and Bruckheimer. Plus, there's also a Johnny Depp Career-O-Meter that rates how well his shows and movies have done through the years. There's also other pictures of him in the career-o-meter section. There's also another little article that mentions Johnny in it. It's called The Must List. It's a list of the 10 things we love this week and Johnny is number 5. Here's what it says: Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: Perched on the precipice of believability, his channeling of Keith Richards and Captain Morgan is Pirates' real treasure.

In the new US Magazine (July 28, 2003), there's a review of Traci Lord's new book in the US Buzz-O-Meter section and here's what is says: Among the revelations in ex-porn princess Traci Lord's autobiography: Fully clothed Johnny Depp climbed into bed with her and she was "nervous". Also in the Loose Talk section it has a this quote from Johnny: "When kids hit (age 1), it's like hanging out with a miniature drunk. You have to hold onto them. They bump into things. They laugh and cry. They urinate. They vomit."-On the joys of parenting Johnny Depp There's also a picture of Johnny with the in the Loose Talk section. I meant to just type that there was a quote from Johnny in Loose Talk. Sorry about the spelling error. I screwed up with my spelling in my second post too. Sorry. It's late. There's also a section called- Rich and Lovin' It Vs. Rich and Slummin' it. There's a picture of Johnny in the article and it says: At a recent Pirates of the Caribbean press event, Johnny Depp showed up with unwashed hair, in a stocking cap, worn boots and a rumpled flannel shirt.

Rachel the Witch - Another worth-reading interview with Johnny at the Boston Daily Globe. AND a great photo!

Meeps -

The mag FACE has Orlando Bloom on its August, 2003-issue´s front page and an article about him inside the magazine - so I looked through it yesterday waiting for the bus and there are about three small things about Johnny FACE, AUGUST, 2003.
Page 68-75.
FANTASTIC VOYAGE.
Words: Jonathan Heaf.
Pictures: David Slijper.
(5 of Orlando - none of Johnny)
Page 70:
Cruising at 400mph, 38,000 feet above the Atlantic and that´s Orlando Bloom over there, totally pissed and mumbling something to Johnny Depp about getting butt-slapped by the blade of a rapier. With every bottle of red wine sunk and then added to the already cluttered cabin floor, the pair´s Golgate-white teeth become gradually blacker. LA is just a dot in the distance. Boy, this is the only way to fly isn´t it? Marlboro. Light for you, Johnny? Coffe laced with Baileys for afters, Orlando? Thanks very much, they´ll take the bottle ...
Welcome to the high for miles club. In a stunt reserved for Hollywood´s most precious cargo Johnny Depp has chartered a luxury jet to whoosh himself on to the film set of this summer´s swashbuckling blockbuster, Gore Verbinski´s Pirates Of The Caribbean. The five star air-yatch-cum-six-seater booze cruiser has made the hop from Los Angeles LAX airport to ET Joshua airport, St Vincent, Caribbean, in just under five hours. Plenty of time for Orlando, Johnny, Johnny´s assistant Sam, Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer (plus wife) to get totally gaga on the unofficial in-flight entertainment. Plenty of time also for the welcome party - led by St. Vincent´s prime minister, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves - to shake´n´vac the red carpet and stand to attention, brass polished.
The jet bumps down and fizzes to a halt, right opposite the PM´s broad grin. He waits. Clunk. Hissss! The plane´s white cabon door slides open and the air-coditioning fugs out on to the dusty Tarmac. Smiles broaden in anticipation, Then drop. Johnny comes out singing in Anglo-LA patois, dancing and hurling his luggage all over the airport: "Ya mon, ´tis so good to be ´ere in tha Caribic wid you, mon!" Prlando follows up the rear: crawling, bent double with laughter, tears streaming down his face, chocolate liqueur lipsticking his boyish pout.
"Sounds like movie star Hollywood wank, doesn´t it!" grins Orlando, as he finish his tale of the Hollywood high-life.
Page 72:
Part boy, part man, part androgynous sex-ozing god, its no wonder people are starting to point.
"I can understand why actors like Johnny become such recluses" he muses, while avoiding the gaze of his admiring fan base now parked all over the grass.

On page 32 it states:
"Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom has a lot in common ... they both worship Johnny Depp.
Further down:
Keira Knightly "... is bubbly and unstarry, gabbling like the schoolgirl she so recently was about the "gooorgeousness" of fellow "school drop-out" Johnny Depp and the "aaaaawfulness" of Los Angeles" ...

harley15 - Finally, us Canadians get some! Johnny is in The Globe and Mail, theres a fairly long atricle about POTC (nothing we haven't hered before ) a tiny picture of Jack Sparrow on the cover and a big color picture of Johnny and Orlando and a picture from the premere of Johnny flashing his gold teeth.

MacFluff -

National Enquirer - The UK edition for 15 July has a pic of Johnny setting off for Letterman on page 35.

I saw a brief reference in the Sun online. It said that Johnny and Vanessa's house had been threatened, but that staff had soaked the ground round it to protect it. There's a feature on Johnny on page 32 - 33. Not much text, but nice pics (none new). It's the same theme as we've seen in other UK mags lately i.e. why he left Hollywood. They're also speculating whether he might get nominated for an Oscar for POTC. Curiously, at one point they quote him as referring to "little Rose". I think they must mean "Lily Rose"

UK papers Couple of snippets. First, the Daily Mirror's Saturday mag, M, has a style page. This week's theme is swashbuckling, with a small pic of Johnny and Orlando.

The Daily Star's Saturday mag, Star, has a half page review of POTC - very brief. To be honest, neither of these amounts to anything much. I'm really mentioning them because the magazines are already up for sale on Ebay, so people outside the UK might be tempted to buy them. I don't think it would be worth anyone's while to buy these because there isn't anything about Johnny in either of them that's worth paying money for. There's next to nothing said about the film and the couple of small pics are the same as we've seen anywhere. There's a brief mention of Johnny in New (not Now) magazine. Very short para, no pic, saying that one of his gold teeth came out while he was dining with friends in a posh LA restaurant. The article claims he just put the tooth in his pocket and carried on eating.

One of the monthly satellite TV mags has an article on From Hell. Quite short and nothing new, so I didn't buy it, but others might want to check it out.

TV & Satellite Week 2 - 8 August has a short article on Johnny on page 18. Some nice small pics and one larger face shot - not the best I've seen as it makes him look a bit puffy. There's also a small pic from From Hell on page 38. Again, nothing new in the article, but this is a cheap mag so I bought it Still no sign of Behind The Scenes here in the UK Maybe they're waiting for POTC to open before they show it. I think there's a short 10 minute thing on Johnny due on ITV2 Movies Now at 11.50 am (i.e. just before lunch) on 2 August (Saturday).

Orlando fans among you might want to know that there's a feature on him in the new Sneak magazine. I think he's also in either UK Elle or UK Marie Claire.

UK Woman's Own Woman's Own for 4 August is now on the shelves. There's a 2 page interview with Johnny starting on page 10. There's one big pic plus a couple of small ones. One of the small ones has Johnny crouching down next to the pram and little Jack is looking straight at the camera - so cute. There's a also a small pic of Vanessa with Lily as a baby. Definitely worth buying this one

Okay, Hello Mag for 5 August has a long interview with Orlando. It refers to POTC and he gives his account of the private plane thingy. He says "We had the best fun. There was one time Johnny Depp, Jerry Bruckheimer and I got flown to St Vincent in a private plane to meet the Prime Minister. So Jerry was up at the front of the plane with his wife, and me and Johnny and Johnny's friend Sam were at the back of the plane and we sat there and drank red wine, and - I don't know, maybe the altitude had something to do with it - but when we got to the island we just, like, crawled off the plane, staggering. The PM was there to meet us, and he goes "Hem man, very pleased to introduce you to St Vincent". Johnny's friend crawled past him, didn't even stop, Johnny gave him a huge hug and kept kissing him, and there's me trailing after Johnny picking up all the stuff he kept dropping. It was crazy. When asked what Johnny was like to work with, he says: Brilliant. I think any actor of around my age would say that Johnny was his role model. He's the map, the gold standard. He's probably one of the best looking guys on screen, yet he kind of morphs into these characters he plays and is so much more than just a guy who looks good on screen. It was great to work with him and find out that somebody I've looked up to for years really was everything I hoped he'd be. There are lots of pics of Orlando, but only one familiar POTC one with Johnny.

In Hot Stars mag, which comes free with OK of 5 August, there's an interview with Johnny on page 38. Not much new in it, though Johnny's account of the plane incident is very close to Orlando's. He pretty much admits that they drunk too much. He also comments that Sam had his pants round his ankles when he got off the plane. He confirms that he gave the PM the biggest hug, though he doesn't mention kissing him.

Article about Keira in the http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,5-2003321542,,00.html UK Sun

Further on in the Enquirer - page 33 - there's a feature on Orlando for you fans out there. In the main pic, he has his hair swept back into a woolly cap, very a al Johnny! There's another pic of Johnny too, on page 47. It says Johnny made producers seasick with his bizarre behaviour during filming of POTC. It claims he was ejected from his hotel, because he didn't like the way it was decorated. Apparently he spray painted the room with graffiti, including the room's expensive French doors. He then made producers arrange to send the doors to his home in Paris, saying he wouldn't attend post-production if they didn't!!! He also refused to walk the plank in one of the big scenes, ha ha.

Called in at my local Warner cinema today and picked up the free Unreel mag. There's a short article on POTC and a pic of Johnny and Orlando.

UK Hello interview. The new Hello mag dated 29 July has a 4 page interview/photo spread with Johnny. The photos are lovely, though none of them are new. In summary, Johnny confirms that he's a doting father. He described Jack as being well-built, really strong and like a tough little racing car. He also says that it was love at first sight with him and Vanessa. The actual interview part is quite short, but it's really nice. I forgot to mention that the interviewer asked Johnny if he has given up smoking. He said that he "almost has"

Movie Insider Issue 2 and Empire September edition both have features on POTC with some great pics. Orlando and Keira make the cover of Empire.

Natz -

The Daily Express for today has a small pic of Vanessa & says:
The exclusive area hit by the fire is home to many celebrities. Those with houses around the area of St Tropez include Johnny Depp....Depp and his singer-actress wife Vanessa Paradis live in the village of Plan de la Tour, which is at the epicentre of the blaze. In fact, the fire is reported to have been started somewhere between Plan de la Tour and nearby Vidauban. The Depp's sumptous villa is believed to have been saved but is now entirely surrounded by scorched forests. It is not thought that the couple and their children, Lily-Rose, four, and one-year-old Jack, were at home at the time. Then it goes on to mention POTC and the normal stuff on him having turned from a 'hell-raiser' into a 'happy family man'. I'd been wondering how close these fires were to Johnny & Vanessa's home. Glad it's been saved but so sad that all the forests around have been scorched

Just letting you know the Sep. issue of Total Film has a nice big article on Pirates & also a 4 **** review There's also a teeny pic of Johnny & Orlando on the cover (Tomb Raider is the main pic) with the caption 'POTC Depp! Bloom! The best swordfights in 50 years!'
OUATIM - On p15 of the 'Upcoming' section there is a 1-page article on OUATIM It says the UK release date is 26th Sep (not sure if this is news to anyone or not, I'm still catching up). There are 2 pics with the article - one of Antonio B. & a smaller one of Johnny (wearing dark glasses, blood dripping down his face) & Eva Mendes.
OUATIM article: In Film Review September--
Here it is:
The Plot:
Deep-breath time for this one. The wondering vigilante known as El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) is hired by a CIA agent (Johnny Depp) to take down a corrupt general. Said military malcontent is in league with the powerful drug baron Barillo (Willem Dafoe) to overthrow the presidant of Mexico. But all is not what it seems - Mariachi has a score of his own to settle with the general. Coups, grudges and gunslingers... The perfect ingrediants for a bullet-riddled bloodbath.
The Shoot:
"We started without a script because Antonio was only available if we did it right away, plus there was the actors' strike looming," says director Robert Rodriguez about his fast-paced, 200 shoot for Mexico. "It was a shake-and-bake schedule, seat of the pants, very guerrilla, just like Mariachi," he continues. "We prepped for about three weeks and shot the whole thing in seven." Despite that pedal-to-the-metal attitude, the cast still enjoyed themselves, as a grinning Willem Dafoe told Total Film: "He's really fun to shoot with. He shoots real loose. I've got a fun supporting role as Barillo." And the best part for him? "I got to speak some Spanish. Rodriguez's wife, Elizabeth, would whisper the lines in my ear before the take and then I would just repeat them phonetically..."
The Buzz:
We've waited this long for it. And with Rodrguez actively explaining the delay - like the small matter of the Spy Kids films to finish off first - we can wait a little longer. Of course, bigger doesn't always mean better, but with Rodriguez at the helm, at least the chaos is always fun...

OK so here's the article & review from Empire Magazine UK (Sep '03) POTC article Keira and Orlando on cover. Many POTC photos inside.

Johnnysgirluk - I know this is a bit late, but did anyone get the TV Paper Night and Day? It had Johnny on the front cover and he was talking about loads of stuff, with some great pics! I don't know if its still available though. There's a long interview with Orlando, including stuff about filming POTC. A few references to Johnny, though not enough to tempt me to buy the mag. August

MadamChi - Ok, here it is...from Aug 5th edition of Star magazine...

Johnny Depp: Why He Gave up Drink, Drugs and Hollywood

Johnny Depp was a hell-raiser known for trashing hotel rooms, drinking and drugging. But five years ago he abandoned Hollywood, gave up his wild ways and moved to France.
And he did it all for love.
It was amour at first sight when he spotted French singer-actress Vanessa Paradis, 30, in a Paris restaurant in June 1998.
“I just saw this back across the room and suddenly the back turned and looked at me,” Johnny now 40, recalled of the moment he first locked eyes with the future mother of their two children, Lily Rose, 4, and Jack, 1.
That romantic connection – and the joy of fatherhood – gave him the push he needed to clean up his act.
“I did all kinds of drugs when I was drunk,” he has said, “It’s all under the pretense that it’s all recreational. It’s all a big party. Well, that’s a lie. It had nothing to do with recreation for me. It had more to do with numbing my brain. It had mor to do with self-medicating.”
But with the birth of Lily Rose on May 27, 1999, was a wake-up call for the quirky star.
“I think I just sort of wandered through 35 years in kind of a fog,” he says “And Vanessa and little Rose woke me up.”
The one time 21 Jump Street heartthrob traded the glitz of Hollywood for the serenity of the South of France. But he frequently leaves his haven to appear in movies like Sleepy Hollow, Chocolat, Blow and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Meanwhile, when he isn’t working, he settles down with Vanessa and the kids in a $2 million villa in Plan de la Tour, a village in the hills above St Tropez.
“Johnny is a perfect father,” according to Vanessa. “He dresses the children, he changes them, he makes the children laugh.”
It’s a far cry from the serial dater who counts, Sherilyn Fenn, Jennifer Grey, and Winona Ryder as former fiancées.
And it’s even farther from Johnny’s volatile romance with British model Kate Moss, which made headlines in1994 when he trashed a NYC hotel room after the then-couple had a fight.
“Fatherhood has given me great strength, great perspective, great calm and sleep deprivation,” says Johnny.
His ultimate dream is make a movie co-starting Vanessa so wouldn’t be separated from his family.
“It would be perfect,” he says. “We can go to work together, us and the kids.”

Will Johnny Strike Oscar Gold?
Hollywood heartthrob Johnny Depp may have found treasure as scruffy scalawag Capt. Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean. Insiders say the part could finally earn him Oscar gold.
“I would be happy and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Johnny get an Oscar nod for this role,” Village Voice movie critic Ed Park tells Star. “Although Oscar doesn’t usually reward comic-adventure roles, I think it is a winning performance.”
Depp,40, has received three Golden Globe nominations- for Edward Scissorhands, Benny and Joon and Ed Wood – but never a statue.
But it may finally be Johnny’s turn to be rewarded for years fo original performances, like the misfit Edward Scissorhands, the bizarre real-life director Ed Woods and Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow
. “Johnny has once again come up with a totally unique and original character,” nationally known film critic Bill Harris tells Star. “He says he based Jack Sparrow on a combination of Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones and the cartoon skunk Pepe LePew. Whatever his inspiration, the end result is unforgettable.”
Now critics and fans alike think Johnny’s fortunes could turn with his portrayal as the whacked-out pirate in the new swashbuckling blockbuster.
“His Sparrow will make you think of Dudley Moore’s ever-drunk manchild in Arthur, Peter O’Toole’s frequently inebriated, spoiled star in My Favorite Year and Brad Pitt’s overtly touched asylum patient in 12 Monkeys,” says Cox News Service critic Bob Longino. “All were odd, but each also gathered an Oscar nomination.”

Yoli - Thanks to Vanessa, Johnny Depp kicks drink and drugs
Fri Aug 1, 1:38 PM ET Add U.S. National - AFP to My Yahoo!
BERLIN (AFP) - US actor Johnny Depp has turned his back on alcohol and drugs since meeting his wife, the French actress Vanessa Paradis, Depp told a German media.
AFP/File Photo
"I'm no longer the guy who fights in bars, drinks and snorts cocaine as if there was no tomorrow," the 40-year-old star told the magazine "TV movies" which appeared Friday.
Depp claims the "pressure of success" drove him into a hole, which he dug his way out of in 1998 when he met Paradis, with whom he now has two children.
"I lived in a fog for 35 years, there was nothing important in my life. Then I fell in love with Vanessa, and she fell pregnant," said Depp, known for his roles in "Sleepy Hollow" and "Blow", in which he plays a cocaine kingpin.

Rox - If you go to the this link, you will find a book that follows the movie. It is written for very young audience, probably 4-8. It has 8 pages of color photos from the movie in it. I called my Border's Books and Music store and they had tons of them. So they are holding one for me. Going to go get it tomorrow. Can't hurt to check it out. I just read a second description and they said on another web site that the age reading is 9-14, so young, but not so young I guess. Anyway the adults who posted about the book really liked it and read it in under an hour. Sounds fun. Hope Disney comes out with a more adult version for us older people. Cute book.
I just got home with my 122 page POTC book by Disney. It reads in about an hour at most and seems to be leaning toward a 4th grade to 6th grade crowd. The book is only 1/4 inch wide so a quick read, and the words are pretty big. The story inside is word for word from the movie, but because it is so small and for younger people, there are not many words. LOL The book it's self is 7 1/2 inches tall by 5 1/4 inches wide.
There are eight pages of color photos. Two on each page. First page has a photo of the Interceptor in the water, and below it is a photo of young Elizabeth looking down at a young Will laying on the deck of the boat.
Page two has one photo of the Commodore walking through the swords at this ceremony. Then the below photo is a close up of Elizabeth looking out at something. Not sure what.
Page three top photo is a close up shot of Captain Jack Sparrow leaning in in the bar. We've seen this photo tons before. The bottom photo is a close up of Barbossa.
Page four top photo is a photo of Will and Captain Jack Sparrow looking off the ship. We've seen this photo before too. Bottom photo is Barbossa talking with Elizabeth at the dinner table.
Page five photo is one large one of Barbossa standing on top of the gold in the cave.
Page six top photo is showing the money standing in the pile of gold in the chest. Bottom photo is the two men, one with wooden eye. They are talking to each other in the cave.
Page seven top photo is Captain Jack and Will on the ship. This one is a closer up one and we have seen this photo before too. The bottom photo is Will and Elizabeth standing next to each other very near the end of the movie.
Page eight top photo is the group of people standing on the cliff looking down at the water. Bottom photo is ...well all I'm going to say is kissy kissy.
I didn't want to ruin the story line for those in other countries reading this that haven't seen it yet.
This is all I can tell you about the book. I got my copy at Border's Books and Music in the Intermediate section. It's written by Irene Trimble. It was 4.99
Oh yeah, the photo? They aren't really totally clear, the seem to have a slight fog about them. Like a mist or something. Strange.

I was just at Ebay, and I saw a August issue of Film Review for sale. Which means it will be here in the USA in the near future. Johnny and Orlando are on the cover

Anerje - Johnny in UK Now magazine July 30 There's a double page feature in this week's Now magazine with Johnny talking about 'love at first sight' with Vanessa, and one of the pix is the same as one of the Hello pix. There's also a pic of Johnny showing his gold capped teeth in this week's UK copy of the Enquirer. First chance I had to get a good look at them. Reminded me I most be 'in vogue', as I have 4 gold capped teeth

Crazyinluv69 - I was in Bellingham (Washington) yesterday, and while flipping through mags in Wal Mart I came across JOHNNY!! It was in Star (celeb gossip), and there was an article on him..nothing I didn't know before (it was titled "Why Johnny gave up drink, drugs, and Hollywood"-or something like that)..oh, there was also a little section on how some people thought he might win an oscar for his performance in POTC..along with it came.....11 Johnny pics!! There was a large pic of him w/Vanessa & a stroller in France, another of him as Jack Sparrow, and 9 small ones of his different roles & real life loves.

Emma - Excerpt from an interview with Robert Rodriguez
Rodriguez discussed what it was like getting back into the Desperado world for Once Upon a Time in Mexico, which is set to release on September 12. "It was fun, it was really a blast. We got to go, before we shot Desperado in the border town where I shot Mariachi, this one we got to go really more into Mexico. Some of the more beautiful locations, and we were shooting it in a digital, high definition, and it looks just unbelievable there. Anywhere you pointed the camera. I would just take a little red blanket and a table around, so we just set up a little set anywhere ... The actors really had a blast. Again, because you're shooting high def, they could see their performance. Johnny Depp did an amazing performance in it, and he got to check and see what he was doing and go, 'Wow, you're right, that does work.' You get to really push actors a lot further. It was fun. It's a different kind of movie, but it still works from the same level of imagination, because it's an imagined world. None of these movies are real. It's not a real Mexico ... it's still a fantasy film."
With Johnny Depp blowing away audiences with his performance in Pirates of the Caribbean, Rodriguez was eager to share his thoughts on Depp's work in Once Upon a Time in Mexico. "I think this is one of his best roles. He plays this really corrupt CIA agent who runs around Mexico, running the country with his cell phone. It was probably the best written part, and he came in and just took it to another ten levels. He shot that before Pirates, and I told him, 'I didn't think you liked to do action.' He said, 'You converted me.' He had so much fun. I don't want to give anything away, but he plays a really surprising turn towards the second half of the movie, and he does it in such a great way. I can see why he would just run off there and sign up for Pirates, because he had so much fun doing this action and comedy."

Wednesday 2nd July 2003 The Master and Margarita Update Just received the following that rubbishes the rumours of an in develoment movie for The Master and Margarita "I read with interest your report of June 9 that the Mikhail Bulgakov novel "The Master and Margarita" was to be made into a film by Tom Tykwer to star Johnny Depp and Famke Janssen based on a screenplay by James Schamus and to be produced by Stefan Arndt and Adam Schroeder.I spoke personally with Mr. Schamus and with Mr. Arndt's assistant, as well as publicists for the two actors. Each of them denied knowledge of any such film, and Mr. Schamus specifically denied ever having written a screenplay based on "The Master and Margarita".Since I represent a party who has negotiated to acquire an exclusive option on the motion picture rights in this novel I am very curious as to the origin of this report in the Z Review. I am not yhet aware of any damage to my client by reason of this false report, but I would like to end its further dissemination and would appreciate your cooperation." The Z review

He might Jump into cameo role
By Steve Tilley
If it worked for Charlie's Angels, it could work for 21 Jump Street. That seems to be the rationale behind an in-the-works feature film version of the late-'80s Fox TV drama that launched Johnny Depp's career. Series creator Stephen J. Cannell, the mastermind behind '80s hits like The A-Team and more recent fare such as The Commish, is reportedly at work on a big-screen take on the squad of fresh-faced cops who work undercover in a high school, with Jennifer Love Hewitt having been approached to star. Johnny Depp is also starring in the movie. At least, that's what he's read in the press. "Somebody faxed me (a news article) that said I was doing it, and I said, 'Oh! Okay. That's interesting,' " Depp said. Depp, who had been skittish about steering his budding career into TV, has said that he only agreed to do 21 Jump Street at the time because he was assured the show would be cancelled after one season. Instead it ran for four years, becoming the then-fledgling Fox network's first bona fide ratings hit, and turned the 24-year-old actor into an unwilling teen idol. But at 40, Depp seems to have enough perspective to carry a sort of nostalgic fondness for 21 Jump Street. "I don't know if they're actually going to make it, but I think they should," Depp said of the proposed feature film. "What a giant, great joke. It would be funny." Would he make a cameo appearance? "It depends," he said. "On the amount of humour they would allow me to put in there."
