February 1999 #28

Hello Johnny Cyber Fans,

You might remember that I whined in a past newsletter about not having any photos from the event that Johnny attended in Toledo Spain last September while filming "The Ninth Gate". I'm pleased to say that Cristina sent me numerous photos from the event, some of which are picture at the right. My favorite picture is a closeup. These are great photos and I thank Cristina.

Johnny is still in the UK filming "Sleepy Hollow" with Tim Burton and Christina Ricci. The filming is set to wrap in March. During the filming, Johnny granted an interview with several European magazines. I have posted two of these interviews, Hello! 1/9/99 and Bunte 12/30/98 on my site with the photos that appeared in Hello!. IMHO, Johnny looks great in these photos. I've also added a couple photos from the set of "Sleepy Hollow" to the site. One is an official press photo and the other appeared in the December 18, issue of Entertainment Weekly. The following text appeared with the Entertainment Weekly photo along with a statement that the photo was taken in Surrey, England on December 14, 1998 -

"Tim Burton certainly isn't afraid to let his freak flag fly. Over the past 15 years, the director's given us a Ritalin-starved man-child named Pee-wee, a pasty-faced naif with colossal scissors for hands, and a hack filmmaker with a taste for high heels and angora. Now Burton and three-time on-camera alter ego Johnny Depp (as well as freshly minted Golden Globe nominee Christina Ricci) are in London tackling yet another twisted tale. In Sleepy Hollow (Due this summer), Depp plays Ichabod Crane-Washington Irving's easily spooked hero who goes head-to-neck with the bloodthirsty Headless Horseman. All of which has the star seeing red. Says Depp, looking down at his blood-spattered shirt, 'Tim, what kind of sick movie is this?!?'"

Christina Ricci was quoted as saying the following about Johnny in the Liz Smith column dated 1/18/99 - "He IS the kindest, most generous, thoughtful man, and chivalrous in ways I didn't expect."

Johnny opened a restaurant in Paris called The Man Ray with Mick Hucknall and Sean Penn in January. The Man Ray is a roomy, double-decker bar and restaurant opening on the Rue Marbeuf, halfway down the Champs Elysées. At the This is London Web site, you can read more about the restaurant and see a photo - http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/dynamic/results.html?in_text=man+ray&in_button= In this article, Johnny is quoted as saying, "This is the first time I've seen it decorated, it looks excellent," mumbles a scruffy Depp. "I last came down when it was just a shell before they started work. It's gonna be great, and I love Paris." Thanks to Reemi for finding this article.

Patty mentioned she saw at People Online, January 4th that Johnny can be heard on an upcoming celebrity charity album called "Hollywood Goes Wild" which will benefit the Wildlife Waystation, a sanctuary for wild and exotic animals in California. Brad Pitt, Bruce Willis, Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Kim Basinger, Billy Bob Thornton, Keanu Reeves and Juliette Lewis can also be heard on the album, which the Boston Globe says will come out early this year.

Monica told me that there is a International Film Festival in Rotterdam which showed Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas the first night. The festival began on January 27th and will run through February 7th. You can visit their page on Fear and Loathing at http://www.iffrotterdam.nl/festival99/eng/films/145.htm

Monica also reported that Neon for December had articles on Fear and Loathing with some photos and a poster from Ed Wood. The January Neon had a calendar which includes a photo from F&L for September. Rachael spotted a poster of Johnny, Tim Burton and Sarah Jessica Parker on the set of Ed Wood in the February edition of Neon magazine. There's also an interview with Christina Ricci in which she mentions Johnny and biting his leg! Hmm, maybe I should subscribe to Neon!

The January French Premiere had a photo of Johnny in their recap of 1998 in the July section. The 12/30/98 issue of Bunte had a great aerial photo of Johnny's mansion. Sky magazine for December had a small article about Johnny and a slight variation of one of my favorite Herb Ritts photos. The 1/23/99 Hello! magazine had a photo of Johnny exiting a party in the UK. The People Online site had a similar photo of Johnny but unfortunately that site has moved to AOL so only AOL members can now visit this site. :-( Monica told me the December Ciak had a 1999 calendar with the theme "12 Stars at the End of the Millennium". Johnny is featured on the October page with the beautiful cover photo from the French Premiere taken by Michael Haddi. Mitch sent us a scan of a photo which appears in the February Empire magazine from "The Astronaut's Wife". The January Cosmopolitan had the kissing photo of Johnny and Vanessa which appeared in Voici. The caption reads, "Johnny Depp gives singer/actress Vanessa Paradis some lip service in Southern France. That's a French kiss."

The February US magazine had a few mentions of Johnny. Following is one of these mentions about hair color - "When Depp needs to get his hair colored for a role, he stops by New York's Brad Johns Salon, where he's attended to in a private room. "Most of the celebrities I do-like Natasha Richardson and Shawn Colvin-don't want to use the room," says Johns, who colored Depp's hair for his roles in Donnie Brasco, The Brave, and this fall's The Astronaut's Wife. "Johnny's the only celebrity who's asked, but I don't mind. I know he's a private person."

The poster for "The Astronaut's Wife" started to appear on web sites in January. Annick, the webmaster of the French Johnny Depp site, has graciously agreed to allow me to place her scan of the poster on my site since her server is temporarily having difficulty. Annick's friend found this photo in a magazine while visiting New York. What a beautiful poster. There is still no confirmation on when this movie will be released. At the Ain't it Cool Web site, the movie is reviewed by a couple lucky people who have seen a rough cut of the movie - http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=2844

My site received a great gift this past month with the addition of scans from Kyoko and Marta. The photos total 48 in all. I've also added some photos to my cover magazine page thanks to Monica, Cristina and Kyoko who sent me the magazines or scans. They are the 12/1/98 issue of Strictly, the 6/98 issue of Cinemania, Japanese Esquire and 1996 Cut magazine.

I mentioned on the bulletin board that a new biography would be coming out on Johnny written by Nigel Goodall from the UK. Nigel has informed me that the book is on hold. I'll let you know more information as I receive it. I have seen his book about Winona Ryder. It's a beautiful book and the text is very pro the subject.

Reemi found the following web sites -

The NY Daily News on 1/18 had this to report -

"Johnny Depp seems to be staying in character after playing a rare book collector in the "Ninth Gate." Shopping in Paris, the Hollywood bibliophile plunked down about $5,000 for a letter by French dramatist Antonin Artaud and a first edition of a work by Jean Cocteau."

On last thing, I'm sure you have heard that Johnny was arrested on January 31 in the UK during an altercation with paparazzi. He has held for a few hours and released with a warning. It's no wonder that Johnny has become wary of photographers and the press with the bombardment of gossip this past month about his personal life. I can't imagine what it's like to be a celebrity and have no privacy. I wish Johnny all the best in this unfortunate situation.

That's all for this month.

Bye,
