April 2006 #113
Not much news for last month. But here it is... IN THE PRESS Joessa - Forbes Magazine - The world's best-paid actors and actresses - Oscars and Emmys are nice, but definitely not necessary to bank the highest paychecks in Hollywood. Last year's top earner made his mark playing a supersized elf. Acclaim doesn't always follow the money in showbiz. Certainly, the world's highest-paid actors and actresses aren't exactly wowing the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. None of them was even nominated for an acting Oscar this year. In fact, only four of them have ever won an Oscar. But earn they do. In the course of a single year, these 20 stars pulled down some $460 million combined, according to Forbes' annual listing of the World's Most Powerful Celebrities. Start investing with $100. Among this highly compensated group, Johnny Depp, who made $37 million, has come closest to winning the coveted 13.5-inch statuette in recent years. Last year, he was nominated for Best Actor for his performance in "Finding Neverland." Close, but no statuette -- the Oscar went to Jamie Foxx. Depp had another chance this year, although not for Best Actor. Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride," for which Depp provided the voice of Victor Van Dort, was up for Best Animated Feature Film. But as in years past, Depp didn't have much Oscar luck. In fact, despite a lengthy list of critically acclaimed performances, the 42-year-old star has yet to win an Oscar for his acting... anerje - Two page feature on Johnny in UK NOW magazine issue dated March 15th - has 2 page spread on Johnny - THOSE pix, of him sunning himself! There's 1 pic of him with his shirt on, with cigareete in hand (unfortunately) and 3 pix of him shirtless :D
Emma - Variety - John Malone's Starz! has brought together Johnny Depp, Sean Penn, Bill Murray, John Cusack and Benicio Del Toro for a documentary on the life and death of Hunter S. Thompson. Budgeted at $500,000, "Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride: Hunter S. Thompson on Film" is nearing completion. When writer-director Tom Thurman ("Sam Peckinpah's West") delivers the finished picture in August, Starz! will decide whether to put it in theaters to qualify for an Academy Award nomination.Reemi - More on the show at Starz. Reemi - According to the Los Angeles Times - Which stars are shining brightest? Defining a movie star is a subjective art. According to the Quigley Publishing Co.’s annual poll of movie exhibitors, Tom Cruise is still the brightest, followed by Johnny Depp, Brangelina (yes, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie tied for third), Vince Vaughn, George Clooney, Will Smith, Reese Witherspoon, Adam Sandler and Tom Hanks. Over at IMDbpro.com, top actors on the ever-shifting Starmeter are Joe Pichler, Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Joaquin Phoenix and James Franco, while the hottest actresses include Scarlett Johansson, Kate Beckinsale, Witherspoon, Jolie and Rachel McAdams. In conversation with many Hollywood insiders, here are some of those under 50 who most often filled the “Well, what about ...” blank: 1. Matt Damon; 2. Johnny Depp; 3. Jake Gyllenhaal; 4. Scarlett Johansson; 5. Angelina Jolie; 6. Gwyneth Paltrow; 7. Sean Penn; 8. Julia Roberts; 9. Will Smith; 10. Vince Vaughn; 11. Reese Witherspoon; 12. And of course, George Clooney.
Deppraved - The March 20, 2006 issue of Us magazine has a regular weekly feature called "The Us Buzzz-o-meter" where they list five of the trendiest things this week. In this issue, there's a photo of the interior of a very modern and chic-looking hair salon and it says: Brad Johns Color Studio. Brooke Shields' and Johnny Depp's colorist just opened this posh salon in NYC's Avon Salon & Spa. (and it give the phone number) *** I guess I just never thought about it, but....I had no idea Johnny has a colorist! I wonder if this guy did Johnny's hair once, and therefore feels he can call himself Johnny's colorist. I just didn't imagine that Johnny gets his hair colored on a regular basis. Maybe he has colored Johnny's hair for some film rolls....the red in Gilbert Grape, or the blonder color in Secret Window, or the black in Don Juan de Marco...I don't know. It sounds a bit strange to me. I don't think Johnny is going gray and has to have his hair colored on a regular basis! The April 2006 issue of Cosmopolitan magazine mentions Johnny in two different articles, both of them are small mentions: One of them is a feature article on Lindsay Lohan with an interview and their "Cosmo Quiz" which is a multiple-choice quetionnaire that they give to the celeb to fill out in their own handwriting. One of the questions is: The hottest guy in Hollywood is: a. Brad Pitt b. Jude Law c. Orlando Bloom d. Other ____________ Lindsay chose "Other" and wrote in: "Davenara Bannart [possibly Banhart] or Johnny Depp." There's a small head shot of Johnny from the Golden Globes event next to the question. (I have no idea who Davenara Bannart or Banhart is! Someone please enlighten me!) The second article is called "Paging the Love Doctor" with the sub-title of: Answers to your most probing questions about celeb relationships from Beverly Hills psychotherapist Bella Dishell. There's a photo of Johnny and Vanessa on the red carpet at last year's Academy Awards with this question and answer next to it: Q: Why would a couple that has been dating for a really long time decide not to marry? A: To some couples, marriage feels like a step that society wants to burden them with, whereas making a lifelong commitment without getting married feels like an ongoing choice. Others are discouraged by the fact that so many marriages fail these days, so they resist a walk down the aisle but remain committed to one another. The caption by the photo says: Johnny and Vanessa: Eight years of unwedded bliss. The Works is an entertainment magazine from the UK, so we're just getting the February 2006 issue here in the U.S. They have a feature article called "The Top 50 Things to Look Forward to in 2006" and the first installment of the POTC sequels is listed as #7. It has almost a full page photo of Johnny as Capt. Jack, screaming and running through the surf with the tribe of natives chasing him. The text says: #7 Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest; The first sequel to the movie based on a Disney theme park ride. The original film got rave reviews and took a whopping $305 million at the US box office, not to mention a shedload more on DVD. Hence, Pirates now becomes a trilogy, with the two sequels filmed back to back. All the key players are back again: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Jack Davenport, Mackenzie Crook...This time they're joined by the likes of Bill Nighy and Tom Hollander, for a tale in which the legendary Davey Jones calls in his supernatural debt from Captain Jack. The cost if Jack fails: eternal hell and damnation, and it's up to young lovers Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann to help him. ETA: June (US) July (UK) (Note: Their ETA isn't correct, as we know the film will be released July 7 in the US.) WEBSITES
Reemi - Video of Hunter Thompson and Johnny at the Viper Room at Hollywood Interrupted. From the News Observer - Author Nick Hornby article, Johnny mention His latest book, "A Long Way Down," falls far outside the lad-lit genre. It tells of the relationships that transpire among four people after they meet on the roof of a building to kill themselves on New Year's Eve in London. Just as with Hornby's previous books, a movie version of "Down" is already in the works. Johnny Depp bought the rights before the book's release. Emma - Transcript from Empire Online - Best Actor: Johnny Depp, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory - Johnny Depp Video Acceptance Speech; Old man in a chair, holding dog; Good evening ladies and gentlemen, my name is Johnny Depp, cuz a few of you don't know me. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the Embassy people for this beautiful Empire award. We'll do it later and do it correctly. And uh, we'll look for many more...Johnny Depp: Uh-huh, that's good, you're fine, go on, get out of here. (Man hands over dog, Depp sits down, complete with pirate 'tache and bandana) Oh boy. Yeah hi, just wanted to thank you for this award. Yeah. Honoured, certainly, touched, be touched again very soon and er, yeah. I think it's absolutely mad that you gave it to me but anyway, I appreciate it. I like a hand-out so cheers, thanks very much. VIdeo clip at Empire Online. Longtime Deppfan - Johnny is voted number 2 by his peers in the business. 1000 actors voted in this poll from both sides of the pond at Channel 4. TELEVISION keddyjo - TV Guide channel - New one hour program (I believe it's new!) to air: Check your local listings! Close Up; 3/23 9pm; 3/24 12am; 3/25 8 pm; 3/26 10pm Deppraved - Sunday, 3/5/06, CBS Sunday Morning will have a segment on Tim Burton and his career. The show is on 9:00 to 10:30 EST, so check your local listings. This morning's show had a teaser which said: With or without an Oscar, Hollywood thinks Tim Burton is a winner. We'll tell you why next Sunday. They showed bits of clips from Tim's films during the voiceover, including CATCF, ES and CB. After almost wearing out my reverse, stop and play modes on my VCR, I was able to write down a transcript of the approximately 15 minute segment. To the important stuff first! Yes, Johnny was in the segment! He had taped some comments that were included throughout, and he looked so sexy and gorgeous! He was on a beach at night, sitting in a folding chair with his skull & crossbones scarf (same scarf he's wearing in the "shirtless" photos) tied around his head Capt. Jack style, and he had a medium-shade of blue t-shirt on that had the caption "Escape. Travel. Live." across his chest. In the background on the beach, there was a roaring bonfire of burning wood. Reminiscent of the bonfire on the beach in POTC when he and Keira were on the island. The setting was obviously devised to make you think of Capt. Jack and the upcoming POTC sequel. Throughout the segment, they showed lots of clips from Tim's films as well as stills of his drawings, a few photos from his childhood, and clips of him on the red carpet at his premieres. Danny DeVito also recorded a few comments about working with Tim, as well as Roger Ebert who recorded his impressions of Tim. I wasn't able to write down the name of the woman who interviewed Tim and narrated the entire segment...they said her name at the beginning, but I couldn't understand it and never saw her name on the screen in the credits. She did a great job with Tim, though, and teased him and laughed with him throughout her interview. He seemed to be enjoying himself and was in a good mood. OTHER STUFF JHChance - MISSING DEPP FOOTAGE FOUND - JOHNNY DEPP's minor roll in 1986 movie PLATOON has been extended for the upcoming DVD release, using 10 minutes of newly discovered footage. The actor played a private in the Oscar-winning film, but most of his performance ended up on the cutting room floor. Sony Pictures is releasing the 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition and discovered 10 additional minutes featuring Depp after searching their film library. Sony's MARC RASHBA says, "(Director) OLIVER STONE remembered additional footage he had shot. "We finally found more than 10 minutes of footage mislabelled in film archives." The DVD will be released on 30 May (06) and in addition to the new Depp footage, the boxed-set will also include new interviews with Stone and three new documentaries. Here's an article that Reemi found on the release at Digitally Obsessed.
Deppraved - This is one of the cutest articles I've seen about Johnny, and it was written, oddly enough, by Jackie Rose who is one of the comediennes who contribute the nasty one-liners in the Us Weekly magazine "Fashion Police.' They've criticized Johnny many times in the past for his attire. This article appeared in the April 2006 issue of Jane magazine and is accompanied by a photo of Johnny on the red carpet at the L.A. premiere of CATCF, a photo that was given to her to critique AFTER she met Johnny in person. This story isn't recent. It takes place during the time Johnny and family were in Montreal while he filmed Secret Window. Psych! It Happened to Me; by Jackie Rose - It was easy to make fun of celebrities' fashion mistakes - until I hung out with Johnny Depp. I live in Montreal, where celebrities can frolic in relative obscurity. We locals pride ourselves on remaining unfazed by Hollywood's finest, in part because so many of us don't recognize them. Not me, though. As a contributor to Us Weekly's "Fashion Police" section, my job is to publicly criticize celebs. The column features pics of each week's worst style sinners, accompanied by snarky one-liners designed to humiliate the stars and shame their stylists. A few years ago, I took my 1-year-old daughter to playgroup on a normal September morning, barely noticing when a new guy and his kid walked in. Amid the chaos of parents de-shoeing their screeching offspring, a mother swooned and gesticulated wildly. A hush descended upon the room as the realization sunk in: It was Johnny Depp, who was in town filming Secret Window, and his son, Jack. I said a silent prayer of thanks for the push-up bra I had on, while several mothers retreated to their diaper bags and discreetly reapplied lip gloss. Those without cosmetic backup tugged out their ponytails, smoothed their T-shirts and bravely soldiered forward. At these playgroups, you're usually stuck talking to the parent of the kid whom your kid is playing with. And my daughter, bless her, wanted to play with Johnny's son. More amazing still, Jack wanted to play with her, too. "Well, they seem to like each other," Johnny said. "Looks that way," I managed. "What's her name?" Good question. "Ummm....Abigail?" Up close, Johnny was divine. He had leather cords around his wrists and tiny tattoos on his hands. His sexy, greasy hair was tucked beneath a ratty cap. He smelled vaguely of feet and cigarettes that had been half-smoked and pocketed for later. Heaven. He also had holes in his socks. He knew the words to the kiddie songs. His son was picking his nose and eating it. Johnny was one of us. When Jack fell down, we all gasped. Dad picked him up and hugged him. And afterward, Johnny's driver whisked them off in a blacked-out SUV. For months, I regaled everyone I knew with my story. I professed my undying love for him while my husband rolled his eyes. I began telling my kid that Johnny was her real father, and stopped only recently for fear she was beginning to understand what that meant. Everyone asked me the same thing: "What if he shows up in 'Fashion Police,' big shot?" "Never will I betray Johnny," I swore. Then one day, among that week's sorry snapshots of Venus Williams and Mary-Kate Olsen, there was one of Johnny. He was wearing seafoam oxfords, some sort of leisure suit and violet-lensed sunglasses. My editor expected the usual critique. I tried. I really did. "Edward Scissorhands called. He wants his suit back." Lame. "This Pirate of the Caribbean should be forced to walk the plank." Lamer. "Instead of Finding Neverland, he should have lost his stylist." Lamest. In the end, I submitted "If you don't like it, just picture him naked" and "I'm volunteering to help him change into something a little nicer." Of course, neither made it into the issue - other writers were more than willing to defame my friend. But I like to think, at the very least, I spared Johnny some pain. A paragraph about Kristin Cavallari on MTV.com included this: Kristin Cavallari, who will guest star on UPN's "Veronica Mars" Wednesday (her own series, "Get This Party Started" is currently on hiatus), admits in Blender magazine's April issue that she has it bad for Johnny Depp. "Maybe I'll go stalk him in Paris," she said. "He's an amazing actor and that's really sexy." Kristin, who's 19 and more appreciated for her hot body than her acting talents, formerly was one of the stars of "Laguna Beach" and most recently was linked to a few dates with Nick Lachey.
Reemi - From The Sun - Pop star Pink is Johnny fan I think Johnny Depp is No1 — always has been since I was little. I think his wife Vanessa is hot too. She’s gorgeous.” Interview with Edward Scissorhands' Richard Winsor with mentions of Johnny at Broadway World. NY Post - SIGHTINGS; JOHNNY Depp and Jann Wenner talking for hours over dinner and wine at Brasserie Ruhlmann in Rockefeller Center. Rice: 'The doctor told me to say my goodbyes' LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Johnny Depp would make a perfect Jesus. At least that's what Anne Rice thinks. And she has given it a lot of thought. "Definitely, Johnny Depp," she says decisively, casting, in her imagination, the hypothetical leading man of the television series she hopes to develop for HBO based on her latest novel, Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt, which chronicles Jesus' life. "I haven't told Johnny Depp yet, but wouldn't he be perfect?" mmmm. . . . Strong. Beautiful. Edgy. Soulful eyes. A graceful person but not effeminate. Roguish yet strangely wise. Yes, Depp as Jesus -- I can see it. Rice envisions a show that would do for Jesus' everyday life what "Deadwood," which she insists is the best show on television -- perhaps ever -- has done for the Wild West. "It would be everything that's going on in Jesus' village -- all the arguments, disputes, whatever --and we'd take maybe five years to get to Jerusalem," she says. "In my book, Jesus is only 7 years old, so we would start there and have a boy play him, and then we'd move on up." To Johnny Depp. I would watch that, I tell her. "I would, too," she says, eyes dancing with enthusiasm. "That's all I want to do. Somebody's gonna do it. If I don't do it, somebody else will, because I can't want to do something this badly and have wanted to do it for so long without somebody else thinking of it. That's what I keep telling my agents -- go out there and get it set up, please!" Contract Music - DEPP AND BRODY JOIN THE AIRSTREAM CLUB - JOHNNY DEPP and ADRIEN BRODY have joined the ranks of the celebrity road warriors after buying top-of-the-range Airstream trailers. The pair were gripped by MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY's much-hyped adventures in his Airstream and splashed out $60,000 (GBP35,300) on popular 28-foot (8.5 meter) International models. But Airstream spokesman TIM CHAMP doesn't think the movie superstars are planning any massive roadtrips anytime soon. He says, "Johnny Depp just wanted one for his home in West Hollywood. "We then helped him design an awning for his Airstream because he was concerned about the eucalyptus resin that was falling off his trees and onto the roof of his trailer. "Adrien Brody was wrapping KING KONG when he came to us. He just wanted a piece of 'casual architecture' for him to use on movie sets. "He has been a longtime fan - he was very enamoured with the space and style." And Brody has big plans for his new trailer. Champ adds, "He is tricking his trailer out, so it has the right kind of music system. I understand he's a big hip-hop fan, which explains why he's thinking about turning his trailer into a mobile home-cumstudio." New York Post - JOHNNY Depp checked out the hit revival of "Sweeney Todd" last weekend, prompting speculation that Edward Scissorhands would soon swap his shears for a razor and some Barbasol. Depp is indeed interested in playing the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, but on the big screen, not on Broadway. He and director Tim Burton are fans of the Stephen Sondheim musical and have been discussing the possibility of doing a movie version. NY Daily News; Oscar escape - That was Johnny Depp ditching Sunday's Academy Awards in favor of a burger and a bottle of red at a late lunch with friends at PJ Clarke's. On a break from filming two sequels to "Pirates of the Caribbean" in the Bahamas with Oscar nominee Keira Knightley, Depp "was in eccentric mode," reports a Lowdown spy. Sporting a beige hat, round glasses and a scruffy beard, Depp daintily cut his burger in half before eating it. "He looked really jovial," said the spy.
Emma - That's all for this month. Bye for now.
