March 2006 #112

Hello Johnny Cyber Fans,

Johnny continues to work on the POTC sequels in the Bahamas. We got some great photos of him from his yacht which you will see via the links below. Here is the news for last month.

IN THE PRESS

Emma - New picture of Johnny from the Bahamas. Note: The same picture appears in In Touch, People, and US in their 3/13/06 issues. herestoyou found more on line. Here is a couple - ONE; TWO.
Deppraved - The photo in In Touch is definitely the best one because it's full page. The photo is People is a little less than 1/3 page size. The caption in In Touch says: Ahoy, Johnny! We thought pirates drank rum. Even during his downtime, Johnny Depp stays in character! Johnny's in the Bahamas filming the two sequels to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The swashbuckling actor swilled wine and sunned himself on the deck of the rented boat that he uses to island-hop on his days off. The second installment of the Pirates trilogy, Dead Man's Chest, hits theaters on July 7.A couple of other things in the same In Touch issue: There's a full page called "The Most Wanted Scarf in Hollywood." It has photos of Kate Moss, Ashlee Simpson, Nicky Hilton, Mary Kate Olsen, Nicole Richie, Sienna Miller and Lindsay Lohan all wearing the same scarf which comes in different colors. The scarf looks almost identical to the one that Johnny has wrapped around his head as a bandana, except that Johnny's has the skull and crossbones whereas the scarf the women are wearing just has skulls. The women's scarfs come in white, navy, black and red. Kate is wearing hers around her hips over jeans, Sienna wears hers wrapped around her head, and the others have theirs draped around their necks. The text says: Leave it to style icon Kate Moss to start a hot new trend. Ever since she started wearing Alexander McQueen's signature skull-print scarf, it's become Hollywood's must-have accessory. Mary Kate Olsen, Sienna Miller and Lindsay Lohan have been sporting the black and white version while Nicole Richie and Nicky Hilton are making a bold statement with new colors from the spring collection. Different hues will be introduced every season and old one will likely be put out to pasture, so get 'em while you can. Brand new metallics are on the way, but there is already a waiting list! $210-$275. Also in In Touch, a two page spread about the group of employees who won the Nebraska Lottery titled "They'll Never Have to Work Again." Along the bottom of the page, there's a corresponding article titled "How to Spend $15.5 Million." One of the photos in the group is a photo of Johnny's Caribbean island with a smaller inset photo of Johnny (head/shoulders shot from the FN premiere at the Venice Film Festival). It says: A Private Island. In 2004, Mel Gibson spent $15 million on his own bit of paradise in Fiji. Johnny Depp was more economical - he spent an estimated $4 million for his private island hideaway in the Caribbean.

Kyoko - The following Japanese magazines have photos of Johnny in their April issues - Screen (cover), Spur, Movie Star and RoadShow.

lovegoscuba - Todays USA Weekend (2/26) mentions Johnny in Who's News. I am entering it here: James Swanson was born in Illinois on Abe Lincoln's birthday, so maybe he was fated to write Manhunt, a new book soon-to-be movie about the chase for John Wilkes Booth."He was one of the top ten actors of his era," Swanson says of Lincoln's assassin. "It was as if a Johnny Depp or Tom Cruise had done it" The hunt "was infected by rivalry, competition and greed. Thousands took to the field. Detectives stole each others' leads." In other words the story has all the makings of a good drama; the movie rights sold before publication. Harrison Ford is to play one of the lead chasers. Maybe Depp can play Booth.

anerje - Johnny, as capt Jack, is on the April issue of Total Film, with the caption 'Jack's back, to steal summer in Pirates 2'. Inside, there is a 5 page feature, with a double page spread of Johnny and a series of pix from POTC 2. It's mainly a preview with Gore Verbinski, and doesn't give much away. It talks about the pressure to deliver another hit. My fav quote is from Kiera Knightly - 'I think Johnny's performance as Capt Jack absolutely is a factor. And it wasn't written like that. It was written completely straight, so the character is entirely his and Gore's. ' Verbinski says that as much as he'd love to make a Capt Jack film, it would be 'too much of a good thing........We know how far we can go without spoling it'.

herestoyou - Imagine my surprise to find Johnny mentioned in the Editorial section of Sunday's LA Times. Of course, this paper has had Johnny in the Business section before, so maybe this isn't too far of a stretch. Anyway, it made me chuckle that they felt this was important enough to actually write an editorial about, especially with all that's happening in the world! A PIRATE'S LIFE FOR DEPP - Disneyland announced earlier this month that it was closing one of its most beloved rides for more than just an ordinary renovation. When it reopens in the summer, Pirates of the Caribbean at both Disneyland and Disney World will feature characters from the two films inspired by......the original ride. It's good marketing and makes for a particularly dizzying case of life imitating art imitating life, or more pricisely, theme park imitating blockbuster film imitating theme park. But the original Pirates ride, however technologically dated, will be missed. A move based on a ride may seem to be a lark---and indeed, Disney's "Haunted Mansion" was. But "Pirates" earned critical acclaim and worldwide gross revenue in the hundred of millions. Disney is banking on the sequel to "Pirates", due this summer, to pull similar crowds, and it hopes that both movies can do for the ride(and theme park attendance in Disney's 18-month, 50th anniversary celebration) what the ride did for the movies. Disneyland has brought its more-recent films into the park before, usually in the form of special shows, "character greetings" or attractions at California Adventure. But this will be the first time a recent film reworks a classic ride. Captain Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp's idiosyncratic, Keith Richards-style pirate, and villains from both films will join the familiar animatronic scoundrels beloved by generation. Since 1967, the original crew has sacked and re-sacked a Spanish Main town for guests gliding gently through the waters(save for the occasional shiver from a nearby cannonball hit), while some of its members wait endlessly for a reluctant dog to hand over the keys to their jail cell. That particular tableau found its way to the big screen in the first "Pirates" movie, serving as a not-so-inside joke, one of those increasingly rare cultural references that almost eveybody understands and finds inoffensive. Which is what's so appealing about the Pirates ride: it's rickety, old-fashioned sense of humor, it's G-rated, family friendly take on some pretty brutal subject matter---the pillaging of a colonial seaport---and its refusal to acknowledge the rapidly changing world outside its caverns. Knowing that the ride was the last to be supervised by Walt Disney adds still more texture to its anachronistic charm. The ride will certainly continue to thrill, or at least amuse, when Johnny Depp joins the cast. But makeup and dreadlocks aside, Jack Sparrow's face is easily identified as that of a modern movie star. Among the swarthy animatronic commoners, Depp's mug will collapse the decades of history that would have reminded riders of why exactly Pirates---however hokey and out of date---was evocative enough to win stamps of approval from both Walt Disney himself and modern-day moviegoers.

The March 2006 issue of In Style magazine has a feature article on "Behind the Scenes" at the 2005 Academy Awards show. It talks about celebrities coming in during the day to practice their presenter's speeches, celebrities meeting and chatting backstage, etc. Then there's a timeline of the big night, and Johnny just has one brief mention: Sunday, February 27, 5:51 pm: During the first commercial, Johnny Depp, a nominee for best actor in Finding Neverland, leaves his seat to go hang out in the greenroom. In the wings Beyonce, waiting to perform the first of three nominated songs, sings softly to herself. A bodyguard stands nearby. (The greenroom is where the celebrities can relax, chat, and there's an open bar.) The article also has a red carpet photo of Johnny and Vanessa with the caption, "Johnny Depp with partner, Vanessa Paradis."

The March 2006 issue of W magazine has a one-page collage of photos from the Golden Globes, including one of the red carpet photos of Johnny and Vanessa. The text with their photo is simply, "Johnny Depp with Vanessa Paradis in Chanel."

The 2/20/06 issue of OK magazine (US version) ran a feature article titled:
Who Earned What in 2005?
Young, Gifted & Loaded
We profile the stars aged 25 and under who earned the big bucks last year. At the end of the article, there's a column called "And the Over-25s who didn't have a bad year either..." Johnny is one of the ones listed with this text: "Johnny Depp found the treasure chest with sequels to Pirates of the Caribbean, earning him $37 million."

The 2/24/06 issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine ranks the top 10 DVD sales and rentals for the week with Corpse Bride being mentioned in both. In Top 10 DVD Sales, Corpse Bride came in at #1 after one week of release with $53.4 million box office gross to date. It ranked #4 in rentals with $5.8 Video Gross to Date. After the rankings charts, there is a small photo from the film with this text:
Kiss of Death
Hollywood's brightest stars - and Sting! - duked it out this week. Tim Burton's stop-motion tale from the crypt crowned sales despite stiff competition from Antonio Banderas' dashing return to Zorro, Cameron Diaz's high-heel reel In Her Shoes, and a new cut of Sting's Dune. But despite the new blood, last week's champ, Flightplan, held on to rentals. Pass the peanuts, because Foster's flying high. (Referring to Flightplan being #1 in DVD rentals for the week.)

The March 2006 issue of Glamour magazine has a feature called "Celeb Dating Types" with the caption "Here's to knowing what you like! These stars sure do - check out their partners." The article features celebs who always choose the same physical type of partner, and Johnny is one of the ones mentioned. There are three photos: one of Johnny and Vanessa, one of Johnny and Kate, and one of Johnny and Winona. Their poses in the photos are pretty much identical, as all of them were red carpet poses. Next to the photo of Johnny and Vanessa, they have drawn a cartoon "bubble" with the words "Waifs only, please" in it. The text says: Johnny Depp: Partial to pixies: Vanessa Paradis, Kate Moss and Winona Ryder - all teeny, all cheekbones.

WEBSITES

Reemi - Robert Towne talks of the struggle to bring Fante's Ask the Dust to the screen in an article at Dogmatika.

Contra Costa Times - This article talks about a new book called "Articles of War" by Nick Arvin that will be released on 2/14/06 in paperback form. It's a short book of only 192 pages. The article says the movie rights have been bought by Johnny Depp. The general idea of the book is (text from article): ...told from the viewpoint of a young man in battle. In this case, the young farm boy from Iowa is sent to Normandy shortly after D-Day. He's bored at first, then scared when he finally goes to the combat zone. What he discovers there is that he's a coward.

JD Mention in Oliver Peoples Eyeglasses Article - It's about Oakley, Inc. buying out the Oliver Peoples line of eyeglasses. It says that Oakley has been the sunglasses of atheletes, while Oliver Peoples has always made classic eyewear preferred by celebrities. Here's a bit of the article: By contrast, the Oliver Peoples name does not even appear on its eyewear. The company has depended on word of mouth of celebrity owners such as Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Jessica Simpson and Gwen Stefani, and not on traditional advertising. Larry Leight, chief executive, designer and co-founder of Oliver Peoples with his sister, Dore Chodorow, said the company's designs were inspired by the estate collection of Oliver Peoples, a 1920s-era optician, that Leight acquired for about $6,000. The company opened its first store on Sunset Blvd. in 1986; another of its five boutiques is at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa.

Winnipeg Sun - Johnny Depp has bowed out of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, the true story of magazine editor Jean-Dominique Bauby, who suffered a paralyzing stroke at age 43. "Everybody wants Johnny these days. We couldn't hold him to the project, so we're in the process of casting a French actor to fill the role. "Johnny really wanted the role but he won't be available for a couple of years, and we couldn't wait."

According to boxofficemojo, The Libertine will open March 10 in 800 theaters. Not too bad of a number, but I'm afraid I will probably be doing a little driving! The Libertine listing is now back up on both Fandango.com and Moviefone.com. Last week they didn't even have a listing for it, so I was worried. Looks like it's a go!

Libertine clip at Coming Soon. At least I haven't seen this one anywhere before. If you do watch the clip, you will get a very clear idea of the tone of the movie. I remember when I saw the movie, and this opening part really gave me chills. Be warned, ***spoiler alert***. It's more of Wilmot's(Johnny's) opening monologue. Scroll down and click on Clip #3

TELEVISION

Deppraved -
As Herestoyou reported earlier that Johnny was on E! News (2/23) in a very brief video interview clip with Johnny about Deep Sea-3D., he was wearing his camoflauge jacket over a white shirt, his bandana wrapped around his forehead like Capt. Jack, and then one of his Fedoras on top of that. I don't know when it was filmed because I'm not sure if it was filmed at the time he and Kate did the voiceovers for the narrative of the film, or if it was filmed more recently. They showed some of the underwater footage from the film with different sea animals and fish, and a quick shot of Kate at the mic with her headphones on as she was recording some of her part of the narrative. Then, as Johnny began, telling his story, they showed a brief clip of a Leaf Shrimp on the sea floor and it seemed to be tormenting a small octopus by poking at it with a long sharp-looking spike that comes off the head of the Leaf Shrimp where a normal shrimp's feelers are located. The Leaf Shrimp looked similar to a normal shrimp except it was much larger and the body was sort of flattened out more than around. Johnny was apparently taken snorkeling so that he could see some of the sea animals, and here's the story he told: "A leaf shrimp...he dug his....he jammed his claw into my index finger (he's holding his hands up in camera range showing how he got jabbed in the finger), straight down to the bone, and....um....(smiling) I'll never forget him." I wish we could post a screen shot of how he looked in this film clip, because he was truly gorgeous even with all the clothing and head gear piled on. His hair was longish and his eyes were dark and sparkling as he was told this story about his painful encounter with the Leaf Shrimp. He smiled that slightly sarcastic smile when he ended the story with "I'll never forget him." I'm still TOTALLY ticked off that this film is not listed yet as coming to the IMAX theater or the Science Center planetarium (where they also show IMAX films) in my city! One of the other threads has an article listing all the cities in the US where this film is scheduled to be shown, and there's only two theaters in my entire state listed - the closest to me would be an hour and a half drive. I live in a major metropolitan totally tourist-and family-oriented area, so you would think it would also be shown here. Does anyone know if IMAX films are eventually released on DVD in a format able to be viewed on your home TV? If not, there's going to be a whole bunch of us who never get to see this film!

This past Sunday, 2/20/06, I was watching some of those shows on VH1 where they have the comedians and D-list celebs making funny comments about whatever or whoever they're talking about on the show. VH1 had a show called "50 Best Chick Flicks" where they counted backwards through 50 of the best chick flick movies. Chocolat came in at #41. They showed some footage from the movie, explained Juliette Binoche's character, and then showed some still photos of Johnny (not just photos from the film). One of the women said, "The guy is SO HOT that I don't think you even know what to do!" (Please...is there any woman alive who WOULDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO with Johnny?? I can think of LOADS of ideas! Many of them couldn't be printed here.) The segment ended with the narrator saying, " Don't worry girls, this isn't the scuzzy pirate Johnny Depp - it's the chick flick clean-cut Johnny Depp." (What's wrong with scuzzy pirates???) Then, over on E! they had "The Fabulous Life of Celebrity Relatives." One of the segments talked about how celebrities always buy homes for their relatives as soon as they make the big bucks. Johnny was one who was featured, and they showed a couple of photos from red carpets of Johnny and his mom. They said, "When Johnny Depp's star was still on the rise, he kicked out $1 million for a 42 acre farm in his home state of Kentucky for his mom, Betty Sue."

OTHER STUFF

Deppraved -
I finally found the Kellogg's POTC cereal in one of the grocery chains here. If anyone lives in Florida, it's being sold in Publix which is also where I got the Kellogg's POTC gummi candies a few weeks ago. Today (2/18) on "The Soup" on E! they had a funny segment that started out by showing the box of POTC cereal with Joel McHale making a comment about how eating this sweet cereal would guarantee that your teeth would look just like Johnny Depp's (Sparrow's) in the movie. Then they continued the bit by showing other boxes of different types of cereal where they had made up funny cereal names (some of them crude) and pasted other pictures on the boxes. For those who haven't found the POTC cereal in your store, I'll try to describe the box. On the front of the box, it has Johnny (Capt. Jack) with a ship's wheel and one hand on the wheel. It says "Kellogg's Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean" at the top of the box. Under the ship's wheel, they have an enlarged photo of what the cereal looks like with this description "Naturally sweetened chocolate pearl-shaped cereal with pirate-shaped marshmallows." (Saying that the marshmallows are pirate-shaped is a real stretch of the imagination, by the way!) On the back of the box is another picture of Johnny as Capt. Jack with a little game that's similar to a maze. The game is round and resembles a gold coin, but has a maze with a start and finish point and it says "Test Your Navigation Skills." At the bottom of the back of the box is another game called "Fill in the Planks" which is a fill-in-the-blank game. There are two groups of five blank squares each super-imposed on top of the corner of a treasure map with torn off scraps of map paper that each have one letter on them. The goal is to "Collect the letters on the pieces of torn-up map and place them in the correct order to discover the best transport for finding your way to buried treasure." It also says "Look inside for all the answers!" Also on the back of the box in various locations all around the box are quotes from the first POTC film and you're supposed to guess which character said them. The choices are Will Turner, Capt. Jack Sparrow, Commodore Norrington or Elizabeth Swan. Here are the quotes:
Pirate or not...this man saved my life!
I make a point of avoiding familiarity with pirates.
What the Black Pearl is...is freedom.
You are without a doubt the worst pirate I've ever heard of.
Also on the back of the box, there are gold coins of various sizes scattered all over, and the game is "A Pirate's Life for Ye! Do you have what it takes to be a pirate worth your weight in gold? See how many doubloons you can spot on this box." On the top flap of the box (where you open it to get to the cereal), it has a smaller picture of Johnny's face (Capt. Jack) on one side and the skull and crossbones POTC logo on the other side which says "Catch all the action in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean in theaters 2006." In the center of the top flap it says, "Pirate Speak: Jolly Roger - The official "skull and crossbones" pirate flag was flown to advise ships being approached to surrender - or suffer the consequences." On one of the side panels of the box, they hit on the health issues of walking with this:
"Put Ye Best Foot Forward. Truly successful pirates know that you have to pick up the pace when tracking down gold! And did you know...just by adding an extra 2,000 steps a day - about 15 minutes of walking time - you burn around 100 calories and boost yourself into a more active lifestyle."
"Create a cool Treasure Hunt Map that requires at least 2,000 steps to find some healthy booty...such as bananas, apples and oranges! Invite your friends to join in a search party, where everyone benefits from the fun."
"Step it Up, Mates! Walking is great exercise - requiring no special pirate skills. Which of the following benefits of walking is not true?
___ Good for heart and lungs
___ Burns calories
___ Prevents "Scallywag's Foot"
___ Increases flexibility
___ Ensures good muscle tone
___ Maintains healthy bones
Look for the answers inside this box!"
The cereal itself tastes just like Count Chocula to me. It's chocolate spheres with marshmallows that are supposed to be pirate-shaped but look more like unidentifiable blobs. The only shape that's sort of identifiable is one that is supposed to be a ship's wheel. It's average in taste - not that great. I think Cocoa Krispies is much more "chocolatey" than this. It's obviously made for kids. I don't care about the cereal - I just wanted the box! They did a great job with the graphics and the pictures of Capt. Jack all over the box and the fun games for kids on the back. I've never seen a sexier box of cereal!

Charlize Theron on Inside the Actor's Studio...There was a nice mention of Johnny when James Lipton asked Charlize about working with Johnny in The Astronaut's Wife which was fairly early in Charlize's acting career. James mentioned that they had had Johnny on the show, and Charlize said that it was a great experience working with him. The dialogue was too fast for me to write it all down and I didn't record it, but basically, Charlize said that Johnny is so amazing because he delivers the same line differently in different takes, and each time he does a different delivery, the line would have a different rythym or a different meaning to it based solely on how he said it. She said that this what she feels acting really is about - reacting to the other actor who's playing the scene with you.

Excerpt from: CIRCA Art Magazine - With its adaptation to the big screen, The Ginger Man has seen a host of Hollywood’s finest vying for the leading roles. The boozing, brawling, wife-abusing anti-hero Sebastien Dangerfield is to be played by the eminent Johnny Depp. Donleavy has expressed his delight at this, citing Depp as "one of the greatest actors of all time, like Gielgud or Olivier. In that class or better."

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest; Starring: Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, Bill Nighy, and Stellan Skarsgård; Drected by: Gore Verbinski; Release Date: July 7, 2006 - Pirates wasn’t conceived as a franchise, so “it’s been difficult to reverse-engineer a trilogy,” says director Gore Verbinski, who is shooting two sequels to 2003’s $305 million–grossing original simultaneously. “I feel like we’re on Project Greenlight. On steroids.” In Dead Man’s Chest, Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack is back (as are Orlando Bloom’s Will and Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth, who plan to be married) and has a debt to settle with an old nemesis: Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), the half-man, half–sea creature who captains the Flying Dutchman and has an octopus for a beard and a crab claw for a hand. “He is a very upset guy,” says Nighy (Love Actually). “He’s so wounded from love that he literally tore his heart out and stuck it in a locker deep in the sea so he never has to feel again.” Other adversaries include a sea monster called the Kraken, some cannibals, and the East India Trading Company (sort of the Wal-Mart of its time), which wants to put a foot on the neck of all independent pirates. “Everything we talked about in the first movie is referred to and embellished on in the second and third,” says producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Any update on Depp’s muse Keith Richards playing Jack’s father? “Keith is on tour,” Bruckheimer says. “I hope it will work out, but you never know.”

The nominees for Nickelodeon's 19th Annual Kids' Choice Awards are: Favorite Movie Actor: Jim Carrey (Fun with Dick and Jane); Johnny Depp (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory); Ice Cube (Are We There Yet?; Will Smith (Hitch)

TiVo marketers learned something more about San Francisco Bay Area singles, too, in their first attempt at this kind of matchmaking event. Most people who RSVP'd for the event liked shows like "Lost," "24," "The Daily Show," and "Grey's Anatomy." Hobbies included hiking, biking, snowboarding, travel and independent music artists. And singles listed Angelina Jolie, Cary Grant and Johnny Depp as most desirable actors.

Pirates poke fun at Keira - British starlet Keira Knightley revealed on Monday that her Pirates Of The Caribbean co-stars, including heartthrob Johnny Depp, were making fun of her for winning an Oscar nomination. Knightley, 20, the youngest 2006 Academy Award nominee after winning a best actress nod for her role as Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, said her fellow actors were not showing here any special reverence at all. "He just laughed at me," Knightley said when asked what Depp's reaction had been when he learned of her nomination while the pair were filming the two Pirates sequels in the Bahamas. "They've all been taking the piss out of me mercilessly," she joked to reporters at a luncheon thrown in Beverly Hills for this year's crop of Oscar nominees, referring to her cast members' poking fun at her. "Every time I do a take, they go, 'Is that an Oscar-nominated take, then?'" Knightley quipped about her irreverent co-stars in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean 3. From Ad Jam - Johnny Depp stays crunchy in milk - Secure in my masculinity, I think I can safely say, without fear of objection, that Kellogg's knows how to make a damn sexy cereal. Don't get me wrong, I love Tony the Tiger and Snap, Crackle and Pop, but they just don't have the sex appeal of Johnny Depp, you know? Only his piercing eyes can make me want to buy a box of pre-sweetened grain and tiny hardened marshmallows that could cut your eye if someone threw one at you. The new cereal was released early this year as a promotion for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Johnny has been nominated for Favorite Movie Actor and Favorite Voice from an Animated Movie for the Nickelodeon's 19th Annual Kids' Choice Awards.

That's all for this month.

Bye for now.
