February 2006 #111
Johnny and Vanessa were at the Golden Globes ceremony last month. Both looked wonderful as usual!! Here is the news for last month. IN THE PRESS Kyoko - Johnny is on the cover of the following Japanese magazines - 03 FLIX; 03 ROADSHOW; 02 HiVi and 02 DVD Data. There are photos in the following Japanese magazines - 03 Kono Eiga ga Sugoi; 03 SCREEN - Booklet on Johnny Depp and CATCF; 02 WOWOW magazine; 02 DVD&Video VISION; 02 Cut; 02#132 MOVIE STAR and 02 ROADSHOW Emma - EW 2006 Preview/Movies; PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST (JULY) - Orlando Bloom--calling from a barge in the Caribbean, where Disney is simultaneously shooting two sequels to its $305 million- grossing 2003 hit--is jazzed about one particular scene in No. 2. "There's a huge sword sequence, which, if it isn't the sword sequence that puts all sword sequences to bed, then I can't imagine what anyone could ever pull out of the ether to top it," he declares. It's a clash among three characters--including his Will Turner and Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow--"on a big water-mill wheel as it rolls down a hill. And we fight on top of it, and around it, and inside it. It's crazy." Sounds it, but we're dying to know: Will Keith Richards cameo as Jack's dad? "We're trying to work out his tour schedule with our schedule [for No. 3]," says producer Jerry Bruckheimer. "We're optimistic."
Deppraved - In the January 16, 2006 issue of OK magazine (US), they had an insert that had about half a dozen pages of "OK! Hot Stars Reader's Poll 2005" results. Here are the categories that included Johnny: Favorite Movie Actor; 1. Johnny Depp - Sexiest Male; 1. Brad Pitt; 2. Matthew McConaughey; 3. Johnny Depp
(This is an excerpt from a lengthy article in the NY Daily News recapping things seen at the Golden Globes.) In the January 9, 2006 issue of OK magazine (US edition), which for some reason, I just received in my mailbox today (1/20/06) along with the current issue, there is a full page interview with Mischa Barton. One of the questions they asked was: Last time you swooned at a movie star? Mischa: I'd say Johnny Depp, but I feel like everyone says him. But, honestly, I can't think of anyone hotter. I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; I was so excited to see it. I loved that it was so dark and sinister, and you really felt like the kids were doomed. Parents were literally taking their kids and leaving the theater during the movie. (Small photo of Johnny as Willy Wonka is right above this question in her interview.) In an October 2005 issue of People magazine, they did a feature article about a hospice for kids and told the story of an 18 year old teen named Caitlin Dolaghan who was battling a type of bone cancer. In the photos in the article, Caitlin was wearing a black Edward Scissorhands t-shirt. This month, Caitlin lost her battle and passed away. The January 30, 2006 issue of People magazine had a tribute to her on the "Letters to the Editor" page and it mentions Johnny and his personal phone call to the teen which must have been so exciting and special for her. Here's the entire article: Caitlin's Battle Comes to an End - In many ways Caitlin Dolaghan was just like any other California teen - worried about getting her driver's license and what to wear to the prom. But when we introduced Caitlin, then 18, to our readers last fall in a story about the nation's first free-standing hospice for kids ("A Place to Say Goodbye," Oct. 31, 2005), she was also battling metastatic osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. Earlier this month, Caitlin lost her fight. She died at home on Jan. 12, surrounded by her mother, Carol, dad, John, sister Peggy and brother Wilson. People chronicled Caitlin's struggle and also the time she spent at George Mark Children's House, an extraordinary San Leandro, California facility for dying kids, where she volunteered as an art instructor. Says GMCH cofounder Kathy Hull: "Caitlin's willingness to share and the time and energy she spent to tell her story to so many people were amazing." Our readers thought so too. Some 250 made financial donations to the home. Two people called Caitlin personally to offer support: Amy Lee, lead singer of Caitlin's favorite band, Evanescence, and Johnny Depp, who phoned from a movie set in the Bahamas to invite Caitlin to Los Angeles - a trip she never got the chance to make. The memory of Caitlin's courage remains vivid for those of us who came to know her. Donations in her honor can be made to Comfort for Kids at www.hospicecc.org. The article is accompanied by a small photo of Caitlin from the October issue, hugging a purple teddy bear up to her cheek, and has the following: "Sometimes I feel like giving up," Caitlin said last year. "But I don't." In the January 30th issue of People magazine, in their feature article on the Golden Globes event, there's a headshot of Johnny and Vanessa with the following text: "He told me to change my shirt," said Johnny Depp (with girlfriend Vanessa Paradis) of son Jack, 3. "Then when I put the jacket on, he said, "Nah, it's all right." Johnny (as Capt. Jack) is on the cover of the January 27 issue of Entertainment Weekly which is their "2006 Preview" issue. He has the largest photo on the cover, and there are smaller photos of 4 other actors who have films coming out in 2006. Inside the issue there is a full page chart called "The Top 100" which lists the highest box office films of 2005. CATCF is ranked #6 and Corpse Bride is ranked #48. In the 2006 Preview article, there's a 1/3 page photo from POTC II with the following text: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (July) - Orlando Bloom - calling from a barge in the Caribbean, where Disney is simultaneously shooting two sequels to its $305 million-grossing 2003 hit - is jazzed about one particular scene in No. 2. "There's a huge sword sequence, which, if it isn't the sword sequence that puts all sword sequences to bed, then I can't imagine what anyone could ever pull out of the ether to top it," he declares. It's a clash among three characters - including his Will Turner and Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow - "on a big water-mill wheel as it rolls down a hill. And we fight on top of it, and around it, and inside it. It's crazy." Sounds it, but we're dying to know: Will Keith Richards cameo as Jack's dad? "We're trying to work out his tour schedule with our schedule (for No. 3)," says producer Jerry Bruckheimer. "We're optimistic." Entertainment Weekly took a readers' poll online asking them which 2006 movie they most want to see. POTC II ranked 4th out of 6 choices with 15% of the vote. Further into the issue, they have a review of the DVD release of Corpse Bride along with a photo from the film. Here's the review: Wedded Bliss; No bones about it: The stop-motion fantasia Tim Burton's Corpse Bride lives up to the hype. Voices of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter; PG, 77 min., 2005 (Warner) - Could it be that Tim Burton's entire career has been a slow and steady PR campaign for the other side, a sort of showbiz version of Jim Jones-style Kool-Aid? In this tale of Victor Van Dort, a 19th-century bumbler/charmer who finds himself betrothed to a Mis Havishamesque decedent instead of his lovely and living intended, Burton looks for heart in the macabre yet again. Depp and Bonham Carter voice their stop-action-animated puppet doppelgangers from this drab mortal coil to a jazzy afterworld and back again (with bouncy help from supporting voices Emily Watson, Tracey Ullman, Albert Finney, and others) in presenting one of the more piquant relationship challenges: the periodic loss of body parts. It's a thin postcard of a plot, and lines like "He couldn't get far with those cold feet" typify most of the humor, but the animation team's real achievement is how they so richly and convincingly vivify (and vivisect) Burton's vision with minimal CGI. In an "Inside the Two Worlds" doc, codirector Mike Johnson touts the "organic openness of the Land of the Dead" as if he were selling prime real estate. Featurettes on the animators and puppeteers peer into what producer Allison Abbate calls the "herculean" process of stop-motion and the labyrinthine machinery inside a puppet's head, while Depp is impressed enough to aver: "Victor is a better actor than I am." Pre-production galleries trace the path from rough sketch to animated vitality; composer Danny Elfman, whose score is sublime, gets his own doc; and in "Tim Burton: Dark vs. Light," cast member Christopher Lee, who's worked with Orson Welles, Steven Spielberg, and Peter Jackson, says Burton "really is my favorite director." Rated: B+ The February, 2006 edition of Elle magazine (US) has a piece entitled "Love Letters" which says, "In honor of Valentine's Day, some of our favorite designers weigh in on their secret crushes and sexiest inspirations." Who's your secret crush? From Consuelo Castiglioni of Marni: "Johnny Depp is very handsome." The article is accompanied by a small photo of Johnny and Benicio in the red convertible from FALILV. (Weird that they picked that particular film to print a photo of Johnny in character that's supposed to be sexy!)
herestoyou - Well I never expected to look for Johnny in the business section of the LA Times,(he did have a small pic in though a few months ago), however in today's paper there's a LARGE pic of Johnny in POTC2(the one running away from the natives on the beach). It's about 1/3 of the entire front page of the section. It accompanies an article titled "Hollywood Studios Rewriting Pay System for Their Talent". Basically, it talks about studios now not letting stars get a percentage of the box office until their production costs are made up first. Then the stars would get their cut of the profits(approx. 25%). Here are just a few quotes: "The upshot of these new deals, which are called cash break even, is simple: If the film is a hit, the directos, lead actors, writers and others will enjoy an even richer payday, but only after the studio has recouped its investment. If it's a bomb, the studio will be spared the ignoble task of cutting bonus checks on a money-losing dog.......The new formula is being used in deals for several upcoming features, including Walt Disney Co.'s big-budget Pirates of the Caribbean sequels......." "Disney's dealings on its Pirates of the Caribbean movies dramatize why the new formula makes sense for the studios. It will cost Disney some $600 million to make and market the next two "Pirates" films, the first of which comes out this summer. For example, if Disney were to pay star Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer under the old formula, the studio would pocket only about 70 cent on every dollar coming in. At that rate, Disney might not recover its investment for years. But under the new formula, the studio will keep 100% of the revenue until it is reimbursed for its costs. After that, Disney will split the remaining proceeds with the film's cast and creators--which could yield a windfall far greater than they might have received under the old system...........Talent agents and show business lawyers are skeptical of the shift. They fear the new contract terms are another way for the studios to amass more profit for themselves while sharing fewer proceeds with the people who actually dream up and make the movies. After all, Hollywood studios have a reputation for getting creative with their bookkeeping." WEBSITES GOLDEN GLOBES '06

Quotes from the Golden Globes - "You come here because the Foreign Press asks you to come, and I came to salute the Foreign Press, you know. They've been very, very good to me over the years." Johnny Depp; AP 01/17/06 New photo from POTC II at Time Inc. New York Times - Johnny Depp said he had just arrived off the set of shooting two sequels to "Pirates of the Caribbean." With tousled hair and an evident ambivalence about attending such events, he said that it looked as if Keith Richards might make a cameo in "Pirates." Mr. Depp based his pirate character in the original film on Mr. Richards. Madame Figaro Interview with Johnny at her website. Use Babel Fish to translate.
Deppraved - From Hollywood.com - This is a poll that ranks celebrities on how much money they've made for the studios in 2005. Tom Cruise ranked #1 - Johnny Depp comes in at number two on the 74th annual list, ahead of Hollywood couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
Reemi - Johnny has been voted No1 on IMDB's "star-o-meter" list. See the article at Scotsman.com. TELEVISION melissac33 - Congratulations to Johnny for winning Favorite Male Movie Star for the second year in a row!!! Johnny was unable to attend due to filming in the Bahamas; however, he was standing by to accept his award. Here's what he said: "Hello. How are ya. Listen I want to say, um, thank you very, very much. My apologies for not being there once again. I'm, uh, I'm on a distant tropical location shooting 23-23 1/2 hours a day surrounded by wild animals and studio executives. It's weird out here. Uh, but I wanted to say that I'm very touched and honored. It's a great priviledge to be recieve this award from the people. Um, yeah, thank you. We're all very, very lucky to have such great bosses, which is - you, The People. So, uh, anyway, I'll just say thanks again to The People and, uh, to my family, who are, in fact, people too. As we all are, which is weird. That's another weird thing. Um, yeah, I don't know. I may weep. I may break into song. I don't know what's going to happen. But, um, you've made me very, very proud, so thank you. Thank you very much again." Deppraved - VH1 "Celebrity Swag" Tonight (1/2/06) VH1 aired a one hour show called "Celebrity Swag" which was really interesting because it detailed how much stuff celebrities get for free, what types of perks they get, how many of them are paid appearance fees just to show up at events, etc. (Paris Hilton gets paid $150,000 to show up for 20 minutes at a party or club if its in the U.S. - she gets more if its abroad.) When they got to the segment on what types of perks celebrities get on a film set, they talked about having the studio's private jet at their disposal (approximately $60,000 to fly from NY to LA). They talked about the huge trailers that film stars get, and used Johnny as an example of what an A-list celebrity can demand in accommodations. They said that Johnny's $450,000 trailer on the set of CATCF wasn't good enough for him, and that he insisted that the studio redecorate the interior of the trailer in the style of an exotic Bedouin tent. (I do remember reading stories about this from people who had interviewed him on the set and had seen the inside of his trailer.) He had silk and satin drapes on all the windows, loads of big pillows everywhere, animal hide rugs (don't know if they were real or fake), incense burners, lots of candles, etc. They mentioned that he got to spend his free time on the set in luxury while getting an $18 million paycheck for starring in the film. But they admitted that the studio probably didn't mind at all since CATCF did so well at the box office. They said that it is estimated that at least 5% of a film's budget is spent on celebrity perks for the film's cast (not counting their salaries) OTHER STUFF
Deppish - Interview with Christopher Lee at THis is London - The only young actor Lee did find praise for was Johnny Depp. The pair have co-starred together in three films, most recently Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Lee said: "The number one actor in the world as far as I'm concerned is Johnny Depp. He's not afraid of a challenge, he's not afraid of anything."
Deppraved - In the much publicized recent feature interview in Vanity Fair magazine (2/06 issue) with Lindsay Lohan (where she apparently admitted for the first time to bulimia and past drug use), she also mentions her obsession with Johnny. At the end of the article they talk about Lindsay's penchant for nightclubbing frequently and her taste in men. Here's what it says: She's not looking for a nice boy her age but has a number of crushes on older men. "I like the ones I probably shouldn't like. The rock star kind of people...I'm obsessed with Johnny Depp. Oh my God, because he's dark and cool and edgy and...dirty," she says."
Reemi - TiVo Top 25 WishList Actor rankings, for the week ending Jan. 8. (TiVo's WishList feature allows subscribers to record all films starring a specific actor.) 1. Clint Eastwood; 2. Johnny Depp Johnny may be at the Golden Globes on 1/16. From Market Wire - Top Ten Money-Making Stars of 2005 - 1. Tom Cruise 2. Johnny Depp That's all for this month. Bye for now.
