December 2005 #109
Johnny was out and about this past month with an AFI Tribute and the release of The Libertine. He continues to film POTC II and POTC II in the Caribbean. Here is the rest of the news for last month: IN THE PRESS Axl Democracy - In the latest issue of Premiere magazine with Peter Jackson and Naomi Watts on the cover, there is a real nice black and white photo of Mr. Depp from the set of "Sleepy Hollow" in 1999 on page 178. It is part of a feature of photographer Mary Ellen Mark's work. The caption says: "I've been on a lot of Tim Burton's sets: Planet of The Apes, Big Fish. It's always a nurturing, creative set. Tim and (Johnny) have a special relationship," Mark says. "Johnny's beautiful. He's a very inventive and gifted actor. I don't know whether he even knew that I took that (the photo). I just saw it and shot it." anerje - There's an article on Kate Moss in issue no. 894 of Hello, and there are 2 pictures of Johnny included - one is a recent pic. Recent quotes made by Johnny are included in the article. herestoyou - Johnny pic Newsweek 11/14/05. On the Newsmakers section, p. 69 there's a pic of Johnny from New York. He's wearing the brown fedora hat, scarf and black coat with sunglasses. There was an earlier post about voting for the celeb pic for the week, apparently Johnny won for that week. Who else? Here's the blurb: READER'S CHOICE - Is is Capt. Jack Sparrow going undercover? No, just Johnny Depp making the streets of New York a little prettier.

In the December, 2005 issue of Cosmopolitan magazine, Eva Longoria is the cover model, and they have a feature article and interview about her. With any of the celebs that Cosmo interviews, they provide them with a multiple choice questionnaire ahead of time called "The Cosmo Quiz" which the star chooses the answer to each question, or can write in an answer if none apply. They print the actual questionnaire so that you can see the celeb's choices circled and the celeb's actual handwriting. On Eva's quiz, one of the questions was: In the 11/15/05 issue of the Orlando Sentinel newspaper, the Sentinel's film critic, Roger Moore, reviewed Keira Knightley's latest film Pride and Prejudice. Here's the portion of the article where Johnny is mentioned: She just left the set of one of two Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, working with Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp. "Trying to do a scene with Johnny and trying desperately not to laugh at his performance is a true trial," she says, laughing. "There were a couple of times where I completed corpsed (actor's slang for botching a scene), and the entire crew would fall down and we'd have to do the entire scene again." In the December 2005 issue of GQ magazine, there's a feature article called "The Style Guy" where readers can write in their questions about men's fashion. I normally wouldn't read this article, but it caught my attention because there are two photos from "Blow" on the bottom left corner of the page. Here's the question and answer about Johnny's "Blow" fashions: Retro Fitted - Blow, starring Johnny Depp, is one of my favorite movies. Every time I watch it, I can't stop wondering what kind of clothing Depp has on. What is he wearing, and where can I buy something similar? Answer: Johnny Depp looks amazing in just about every scene in Blow. Seeing him stylin' with brazen confidence in those leisure suits and long-collared shirts makes you realize why these clothes were fashionable in the first place: They looked good on cool cats. But they failed as a movement because they didn't look good on John Doe. The costume designer of Blow was the brilliant Mark Bridges, who also did the wardrobe for I (Heart) Huckabees, The Italian Job, 8 Mile, and Be Cool, among other films. Some of the clothes in Blow came from thrift shops like L.A.'s Academy Award Clothes and New York's Resurrection. Everyone from Yves Saint Laurent to Banana Republic made a safari jacket this season, similar to the white one sported by Depp on his second trip to Colombia. But for best results you may want to scour the thrift shops and eBay. Be warned, the good lot can be pricey. The 12/1/05 issue of Rolling Stone magazine has a photo of Johnny signing autographs in NYC the weekend that he went there for the 50th anniversary party at The Ginger Man pub, celebrating the novel "The Ginger Man." The caption by the photo says: "Celeb hermit Willy Wonka - er, Johnny Depp - greets fans in New York." They also have a brief review of CATCF on DVD. It says: Director Tim Burton and star Johnny Depp take Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka for a twisted ride. The colors on the two-disc DVD are tempting and toxic. Dahl would approve. Hot Bonus: A segment on how Burton turned actor Deep Roy into dozens of Oompa-Loopmas. Killer Scene: The nut sorting. In the December 2005 issue of Elle magazine (US), they feature three new photographic books that they call "Must Reads." Here's the text on one of them: Ladies or Gentlemen: A Pictorial History of Male Cross-Dressing in the Movies (Filipacchi, $65); It's one of anthropology's rare universals that men in drag make people laugh until they cry. Jean-Louis Ginibre, longtime editorial director of Hachette Filipacchi (which publishes ELLE), celebrates the spirit of burlesque with this encyclopedic survey of 90 years of film follies (with occasional bouts of real pathos) in some 700 lushly detailed photographs - from Buster Keaton, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon to James Coburn (pictured, from The Last of Sheila, 1973), Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, and Johnny Depp. Ginibre shows how faux femininty is a hallowed and global cinematic tradition rooted in fascination with our own sexuality - not to mention that of others. A 10/12/05 USA Today article written by Whitney Matheson is called "Pop Candy - In Entertainment, There's Plenty of Room for Fantasy." It's an article in which she describes watching her husband literally transform himself (like Jeff Goldblum's transformation in The Fly) during fantasy football season, and she wonders what makes men so crazed about pretend sports teams. Then she starts thinking about what it would be like if she could create her own fantasy team for movies, and guess who she starts out her fantasy with??? "Let's start with the no-brainer: I'd make Johnny Depp the leading man. Depp could star in a documentary about sheetrock, and I'd still race to the theater on opening night." "Picking a lead actress is trickier, but I'll go with Tilda Swinton. Ever since I saw Thumbsucker, I've been on a Tilda kick, and I think it's time she became more of a major player in Hollywood. It would also be refreshing to see Depp paired with an actress close to his age; he's 42, she's 44." "As for the supporting actress, I choose Angelina Jolie, who I'd like to see veer from mediocre, big-budget films and return to more meaningful parts. As a bonus, she's never worked with either Depp or Swinton, so imagine the chemistry!" The article goes on to talk about her fantasy picks for director, screenwriter, supporting actor, soundtrack musicians, and cameo appearances. She then takes it another step further and comes up with her own dream TV series, but Johnny isn't mentioned in that fantasy.
Reemi - UK ABC Magazine: Johnny Depp Libertine cover (Nov 05) In the December issue of Total Film, Johnny Depp talks about his role in 'The Libertine', WEBSITES Deppraved - MSN's DVD Guide - Best of Johnny Depp; We celebrate a movie star who runs his career on his own terms. Is Johnny Depp a star because of hs idiosyncratic choices or despite them? He doesn't play by movie-star rules, and he has consistently steered clear of big-budget, high-profile productions, focusing rather on a wide array of challenging roles and eccentric characters. Depp plays in the kinds of films that garner great reviews but small audiences. That is until the acclaimed actor starred in "Pirates of the Caribbean," his first bona fide hit, which he made after taking a yearlong sabbatical to be with his romantic partner, French pop star Vanessa Paradis, and their newborn child. Although Depp had small roles in a pair of iconic 1980s hits - as the doomed boyfriend in Wes Craven's genre-reviving "A Nightmare on Elm Street," and as a young grunt in Oliver Stone's landmark "Platoon" - it was TV that first put Depp on the map. "21 Jump Street" made Depp a pop icon, but it was the succession of vividly realized, often wildly eccentric screen characters that made him an actor to be reckoned with. His Willy Wonka in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is now on DVD, and he is preparing to bring his unforgettable punch-drunk pirate con-man Jack Sparrow back to the screen in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." Obviously, Depp still plays the Hollywood game by his own rules, and by the looks of it, he's having as much fun as his characters. Here's a brief survey of the idosyncratic career and memorable characters in the career that Depp built. (As you click on each page, it takes you to about five of Johnny films with a brief synopsis of the movie and one photo from each film.) Dated 10/22/05 from The Scotsman - One in four boys wants nip and tuck to look like idol. A quarter of young boys want to have cosmetic surgery to help them look like their idols, a poll revealed yesterday. The survey found that 25% of boys aged five to eleven admitted they wanted plastic surgery to improve their appearance and look like a celebrity. This compared to 20% of girls who wanted to have surgery to look like their idols. The poll of 2,000 youngsters found that young boys would most like to look like David Beckham, Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp, and would have surgery to achieve this aim. Most said they wanted to look like their heroes because they thought it would make them popular with their peers. Johnny photos at the BAFTAS -

The POGUES frontman, famed for his rotting teeth and drunken rampages, has charmed the movie icon with his lyrics - which include the romantic gem, "You scumbag, you maggot, you great lousy faggot" from festive anthem FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK. Depp enthuses, "His intake has been pretty impressive over the years. "But he has produced some of the most beautiful lyrics that are a great gift to the world." Smash Hits Poll Winners Party: Readers voted EastEnders the best TV show, and rated Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the best film, with its lead actor Johnny Depp movie star of the year. Depp's 20 year kid ban, Sun Online - JOHNNY DEPP has banned his two children from watching his new movie The Libertine for 20 YEARS, because it's too rude. The actor plays alcoholic 17th century author Lord Rochester in the film, and insists it will be inappropriate for six-year-old Lily Rose and three-year-old Jack to watch for some time. He told Entertainment Tonight: "I want my kiddies to be given the opportunity to be children and innocent and free for as long as possible before the inevitable bad things in the world rear their ugly heads. "I would say it's safe for them to see Pirates Of The Caribbean and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory but I'd want to wait 20 years before letting them see The Libertine." From LA Times - Honoring, and torturing, Depp; Johnny Depp, nattier than usual in a brown zoot suit, a wicked 'stache and an antique watch fob, squirmed uncomfortably during his AFI Fest Career Tribute at the ArcLight last Friday. He was being forced to view clips from his past films. After a snippet from one of his early films, John Waters' "Cry-Baby," Depp practically begged for mercy: "Is this some new form of torture?" Deflecting film critic-author Richard Schickel's inquiry into his "outsider" oeuvre, Depp curled his mustache and replied, "Ah yes, I know of the oeuvre. I try to avoid the oeuvre." DEPP: 'I'LL NEVER HAVE A HOLLYWOOD AFFAIR', Contact Music - Screen hunk JOHNNY DEPP will never compromise his relationship with partner VANESSA PARADIS, because his traditional values forbid adultery. The romantic star insists he is able to resist the temptations on offer in Hollywood, even if many of his contemporaries cannot. "Everybody's different. Some people, they call it an arrangement, don't they? "But that's not for me. I'm old-fashioned. It's my Kentucky mentality. I can't seem to escape it." Video interview with Johnny at Talking Movies. Variety - The 2005 AFI Film Festival - From the opening-night gala for "Walk the Line" to the closing-night premiere of "Casanova," the AFI Film Festival in Hollywood proved one thing: If you show it during awards season, they will come...Another rare moment during the 10-day event was seeing the usually self-effacing Johnny Depp in praise of himself. At an AFI tribute to his career, the actor visibly shuddered every time a clip played. "This is some form of torture," he laughed, as pals Richard Zanuck, AFI director Jean Picker Firstenberg and Harvey Weinstein watched him squirm. Depp was there to help promote his latest film, "The Libertine," which he describes as "down and dirty." "I'm really proud of it," he smiled.

Trailer and interviews for The Libertine at My Movies. Lycos Film Thursday 10 November Daily news - Titles don't bother Johnny Depp! It's not everyday that you get to tell one of the biggest stars in the world the name of their new movie, but we got the chance recently while chatting with Johnny Depp. We were lucky enough to grab a few words with Hollywood mega-star about his new movie "The Libertine" (which is released in cinemas across the UK next week) and took the opportunity to grill him about how things are going on the two "Pirates Of the Caribbean" sequels. "It's going beautifully. It has all the right sort of elements involved. It's got all the right levels of action, fun, absurdity, irreverence and humour. I think we've taken it to a really nice place. It doesn't feel like a sequel at all, it feels just like another angle on the movie and these people. So yeah, it's really going well," Johnny revealed before we asked if the third movie in the series has been given a name yet. "I don't know. I don't even know what the second film's name is yet, I just call them "Pirates 2" and "3"" he told us so we let the "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory" star know that the full title of the second movie is "Pirates Of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest". "Ah good, thanks for telling me," he laughed. Excerpt from IMAX Corporation Earnings Conference Call (Q3 2005) November 2005; Our third IMAX 3D film for next year is Deep Sea 3D, a 45-minute original IMAX production we are releasing with Warner Brothers in March. LA Times Calander Live - Something old, something new for Stones, At their final Hollywood Bowl show on Tuesday, the Rolling Stones pulled a few surprises. November 10, 2005 - At their final Hollywood Bowl show on Tuesday, the Rolling Stones treated a star-studded audience with two songs the band has never performed live before — one new and one very old. The latter was an acoustic version of "As Tears Go By," which Mick Jagger introduced as one of the first songs he and Keith Richards wrote together but one that they "gave away." The ballad was a 1964 hit for Marianne Faithfull. The other first-timer was "It Won't Take Long," which capped a run of three straight songs from the new "A Bigger Bang" album during the show's first half after "Rough Justice" and "Rain Fall Down," a stronger emphasis on current material than has been standard through the Stones' tour that began in August. Jagger wryly noted the celebrity presence (which included Jack Nicholson, Johnny Depp, Jim Carrey, Clint Eastwood and Bruce Willis) in several onstage comments during the frisky performance. "Got a lot of famous people here tonight," he said at one point. "Want to thank them all for coming. Too numerous to mention, but they'll all be on stage for the 'Let It Be' finale." He also commented that the heavy showbiz representation in the audience added a certain pressure to shows here. "I always feel like we're auditioning," he said of playing in Los Angeles. "But we always get called back." tequilacat1 - More on Johnny at the Stones concert (I think this was written by a fan on a Stones website) Out of the gate, Mick was on fire, sprinting to the end of the catwalk during "Start Me Up" as if he were about to dive into the audience. Thankfully, he braked in time, because otherwise Johnny Depp would have had to catch him, and Depp spent most of the show seated, staring impassively at the proceedings. Seated next to Keith's manager, Jane Rose, who performed the difficult task of singing along while taking photos, Depp did loosen up a little for Keith's set and the "b-stage" portion, but he split before the encore. OTHER STUFF herestoyou - TVNow page: "Johnny Depp: When the actor moved to France, he told reporters that he left Los Angeles because America was too violent for his family. Surprise, he went to France, another spot on the map that has been overrun by violent activities. Calling the rioters that set cars on fire "insane," Depp told some reporters that he might be forced to move back to the United States to find a safer place to live. Considering all the angry people on this planet, there might not be a place anywhere that would be suitable for his relocation plans. "
Emma - Keira on Johnny Playing Captain Jack, "You watch him playing Jack Sparrow, and he's loving it, and he's loving being in that world," she says. "He's still excited by it. It's a privilege to see the human side of Johnny. It's really exciting." lovegoscuba - Last night (11/7/05)on AC360 there was an interview of Ann Rice about her new book. She intends to only write about Christ now. When asked who she would like to see play Christ if her books are made into a movie she said Johnny Depp.
Reemi - Johnny is up for the People's Choice Award for Favorite Male Movie Star. Rosamund Pike interview at the Scotsman- Acting opposite Depp was fantastic, she says. "He's so brilliant to work with, so exciting, you believe in him so much as a character. It made my job very easy." Off-camera, he was no less appealing. "He's like the coolest kid in school. You want to be in his gang. His whole lifestyle is kind of wonderful. He travels with this big group of people. He's like a gypsy. His caravan is always filled with his friends, playing guitar and painting. You want to be in the band. The guys who look after the trailers were like, 'How do we clean in there?' because he covered it with drapes and candles, just covered every available surface." From the Manila Bulletin online - Chow Yun-fat impressed with Johnny Depp - HONG KONG (AP) —Hong Kong actor Chow Yun-fat was impressed with his "Pirates of the Caribbean" co-star Johnny Depp and wants more opportunities to work with him, a report said Friday. "I only had one scene with Johnny Depp, but he strikes me as a very good actor," Chow was quoted as saying by the South China Morning Post. Chow plays a notorious Chinese pirate, Captain Sao Feng, opposite Depp in the third installment of the Disney series. "If they make more sequels and invite me to be in them too, I definitely want more scenes with him," the newspaper quoted Chow as saying. Interview with Keith Richards re Pirates in the Salt Lake Tribune SLT: Will Walt Disney sue me if I ask you about the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies? KR: I don't know. They like to sue anybody. They might sue me for talking about it, too. I saw Johnny Depp last week in L.A., and he's doing it for the next year so we're talking about when the Stones' tour is finished, hopefully it will be done. We're looking at it, and it's another thing to do with logistics and timing and such. SLT: So they haven't had you on the set yet? KR: No, but Johnny and I did spend an interesting afternoon in ludicrous pirate costumes. I got measured for the job, but whether or not it will happen, I can't say. SLT: Is that something you look forward to? KR: Yeah, I'd like to do it. Johnny sort of threw the idea at me, and I said, "If you can pull it all together, and find the time, let's do it. It will be fun." SLT: I was reading recently in a charity album you were involved with, kind of pointing people toward what you called the "triggers" of the music that you love. As a fan, you wanted to know what Muddy Waters listened to, and what Robert Johnson listened to. Clearly, you're going to be one of those triggers for people out there. Do you hear much of your own influence on other players? KR: Yeah, in a weird way, here and there. Or I get somebody who comes up to me and says, "You've got to hear this guy. He's got the real Keith Richards sound." Well, I don't even have that! I'm working on it. I guess now and again I'll hear something and go, "Oh, man, he just got that lick right off." It's kind of nice seeing all these young kids out there, these guitar players. I mean, these guys are like 11, 12. We get a bunch of them with every show. It's kind of interesting to see. SLT: Is it funny that people still refer to Ronnie [Wood] as the "new guy" after 30 years in the band? KR: Yeah, really [laughs]. SLT: Well, I really appreciate the time. It will be my first time seeing the Stones. KR: OK, cool . Enjoy it. We hope to see you there. Take it easy, man. Helena Bonham Carter article - She wears a photograph of her very handsome blond son (Johnny Depp is his godfather) From Cinematical - Has Harvey Weinstein given up on Oscars? Filed under: Weinstein Brothers, Johnny Depp, Awards, Disney, The Weinstein Co. Over at The Envelope, James Gates is predicting that Harvey Weinstein is going to largely stay out of this year's Oscar race. It's not that the films he and brother Bob have been involved with over the past twelve months aren't good enough to promote – although, in some cases, that's exactly it – it's that he's got one very good reason not to. "Having spent the last nine months (at least on paper) in the Disney fold," Gates writes, "Pretty much any awards glory would feel like it was being shared with a company he loathed being owned by." Gates predicts that Weinstein will launch a small handful of campaigns for actors and actresses that he'd like to cement working relationships with; Johnny Depp is the obvious example, and it does seem improbable that the Weinstein boys would let his performance in The Libertine slip by fellated. I think Gates is exactly right - in fact, I think he maybe even underestimates the lengths to which Harvey's already gone to fill the four acting slots with his guys. Depp is surely a lock for Best Actor, and his co-star in The Libertine, Samantha Morton, has a chance in the Best Supporting Actress field as well. Transamerica should definitely reel in a Best Actress nod for Felicity Huffman, and even if Kevin Zeggers can't slide into the Supporting Actor category, Bob Hoskins, co-star of Mrs. Henderson Presents, can probably pick up the slack. Finally, that film's star is Judi Dench – a lady who, when it comes to Oscars, can never be completely counted out. Times Online, 13 November 2005 - The period romp The Libertine had a real team feel about it, she says, recalling how its troupe — from Johnny Depp to Johnny Vegas to Johnny Malkovich — were “all locked up” on the Isle of Man, working and, it would seem, playing hard. Her role is small — Jane, a sort of grubbed-up Nell Gwyn, a society whore who, among other things, gets to fellate (though not in a literal, Brown Bunny sense) Johnny Depp’s pre-syphilitic Earl of Rochester. “He’s given her her apprenticeship, and now she’s top dog in Restoration London,” she laughs. Depp, she insists, provided something of an acting masterclass for all of them. “He’s the best, he really is. I could talk to you about him until the cows come home. To see somebody in their element like that ... All the young actors — me, Richard Coyle, Tom Hollander — we just loved him. He’s like the coolest guy in the school.” NEW YORK (AP) -- Paparazzi go to extremes to snap photos of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie - and according to a new survey, you'd like to be in the frame. A poll conducted by TakeGreatPictures.com says that more people would like to have their picture taken with Pitt than any other male movie star, and more would love to pose with Jolie than any female star. Pitt's 36.1 percent of the online vote beat out Johnny Depp by just 60 votes. Jolie's closest competition was Halle Berry, only 42 votes shy of Jolie's 25.6 percent. Pitt's ex-wife Jennifer Aniston also came close with 23.2 percent. Murray Farnell has seen Pirates of the Caribbean more than his fair share of times. He’s watched the movie over and over — even in slow motion — in preparation for his up-coming role as Capt. Jack Partridge, in Jubilation’s Pirates of the North Saskatchewan, which is based on Johnny Depp’s Capt. Jack Sparrow. “It was a lot of work to get that character down because he is very physical. Even in slow motion, when everyone else is standing still, he (Depp) is always moving in some fashion. It’s really bizarre,” says Farnell, a Saskatchewan-raised actor who traded in an aviation career for one in the theatre. “I think of it like I’m on a constantly moving floor. It’s hard to pull off when you try it.” While Farnell’s character is similar to Sparrow, the play’s plot is completely different from the well-known film. It centres around the maiden voyage of the Not-So-Much and Partridge’s struggle to claim his father’s $2-million inheritance, which is hidden somewhere on the ship. Johnny is a nominee for the 32nd annual People's Choice Award in the category of Favorite Male Movie Star. From Contact Music - CLOONEY AND DEPP SNUBBED BY BRITISH COMEDY DUO - Hollywood stars GEORGE CLOONEY and JOHNNY DEPP's requests to appear in the upcoming series of UK comedy show LITTLE BRITAIN have been snubbed - because they are too famous. DAVID WALLIAMS and MATT LUCAS, creators and stars of the highly acclaimed sketch show, have no intention of following RICKY GERVAIS' example by writing celebrity cameos into their sketches. THE OFFICE star Gervais has been grabbing headlines after announcing he has signed up TOM CRUISE for an appearance in his show EXTRAS - but Lucas and Walliams can't imagine their comic creations interacting with hunky superstars. Lucas says, "It could really unbalance the show. I mean, (our characters) LOU and ANDY would never meet George Clooney. "There will be no cameos from the stratospherically famous. We try to save celebrity appearances for (British fundraising TV extravaganza) Comic Relief." From Contact Music - Actress ROSAMUND PIKE was distraught when she discovered JOHNNY DEPP had to reject her sexual advances in upcoming film THE LIBERTINE, because she has long harboured a crush on the hunky screen icon. The former BOND girl was hoping for some erotic scenes with the CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY star, but he had to act either drunk or disinterested in her character's offers of intimacy. She says, "Unfortunately, whenever we were in bed together, he was supposed to be either p**sed (drunk) or completely uninterested." From Sun Online - JOHNNY Rotten wants Justin Timberlake to play him in an upcoming movie of his life. If Justin doesn’t do the movie, the punk rocker has also set his sights on Trainspotting star Robert Carlyle or Hollywood actor Johnny Depp, who has also been tipped to play legendary hell-raiser Ozzy Osbourne in another biopic. Johnny said: "(I'd like) Timberlake or Robert Carlyle. Or Johnny Depp, who’s a great mate. He might do it. Or me. I might!" From the Mirror - XMAS TV IS END FOR LITTLE BRIT - THE hit TV comedy series Little Britain will end with a celebrity-studded Christmas special next year. Matt Lucas and David Walliams hope to get cameos from Robbie Williams, George Michael and Johnny Depp. Fans will get to see the third and final series of Little Britain on BBC1 later this month.
