November 2005 #108
Johnny continues to film POTC II and II in the Caribbean. Last month he was honored at the AFI Fest 2005. This month The Libertine will open November 25th, 2005 in New York and LA and expand on January 13th, 2006 national. Here are some photos and a look at the poster. Now for the rest of the news from last month - IN THE PRESS anerje - The Times has a free magazine inside entitled the 'film issue' and they have a 5 page article on the Libertine with a series of great pictures. Johnny and Malkovich are on the cover, in colour. You can really see Johnny's 'made up nose' - he looks so different, IMO. Emma - Interview with Johnny about Corpse Bride at Daily Record.
Deppraved - In the 10/31/05 issue of OK magazine (US), they have a travel feature on Jamaica. One small sentence caught my eye and I decided to do some further investigation on the Internet. The OK article said, "Many celebs head to Jamaica for some R&R and a good time." Then further down the article, it says, "Stars who have visited Goldeneye garden and planted trees include Harrison Ford, Jim Carrey, Johnny Depp, Dennis Hopper, Christy Turlington and Kate Moss." Also in that issue, there's a small article with a photo of Johnny and Orlando together at the POTC premiere in LA. Here's the text: Mistaken Identity - It's hard to believe, but Orlando Bloom told me this week that he has been mistaken a few times for Johnny Depp. Really? "It's happened on the set of POTC2," said Orlando. Well, when you're both dressed as pirates and the fans are far away, it's an easy mistake. I told him mistaken identity is actually pretty common: Oliver Hudson, actor and brother of Kate, got mobbed last week by girls in LA who thought he was Orlando. "Great! I owe him a pint," Orlando told me. What a generous guy! In the November 2005 issue of "Jane" magazine, they had a feature article with the heading, "When it comes to our sex poll, 3,740 of you can't be wrong...just a little too generous in spilling all the naughty details. Not that we're complaining." The magazine did a poll where they asked specific questions regarding sex and in this issue they printed the responses of the readers. One of the questions was, "Which celebrity would you most like to seduce?" There are photos of five celebs with the percentage of readers who voted for them under each photo. The celebs in the photos are Will Smith (7%), Angelina Jolie (23%), Adrian Grenier (5%), Jude Law (24%) and A-Rod (2%). Then there's this text: "The other 39%: Outside of those who think 'celebrities are vile,' a number of people wrote to remind us of the hotness of Johnny Depp, Jake Gyllenhaal, Vin Diesel, Vince Vaughn, Zach Braff and Gael Garcia Bernal. And one reader shared her thoughts on why 'Alfie' lost her vote: 'Didn't you see the pic on the Net of Jude's package? Disappointing.'" In the November 2005 issue of "Glamour" magazine, Johnny was mentioned in two different articles. One was a feature article called "Men After Dark" which was quite lengthy. Within the feature was a page titled "Daytime Guy? or Nighttime Guy?" It features photos of various male celebs. The tag line is: "There are two kinds of sexy men: day guys, with their touch-football vibe, and night guys who only shine after dark." Johnny is pictured in the group of "Night Guys" which also includes Lenny Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Jude Law, and David Beckham. (Actually, Beckham is listed in both categories - Day Guy and Night Guy.) The photo of Johnny is from the premiere of "Finding Neverland" at the Venice Film Festival last year. Short haircut, dressed all in black. The caption says, "Johnny Depp defines 'dark side.'" The other mention comes in an article about nightclubbing in LA and NY, with lots of photos of young Hollywood celebs out on the town. There's a section called "The Three Best Nights of My Life" and one of the people asked was Rachel Zoe, a young and very popular celebrity stylist. Her #1 Best Night of her Life is: "The night I got to meet Johnny Depp. He said hello to me and I completely froze." Johnny must have REALLY impressed her, because she listed him as topping her list of Best Nights. The #2 she listed was dressing (styling) a lot of celebs for the Golden Globes last year, and attending the Glamour/Miramax party where she was able to relax. The #3 "best night" was when her now-husband threw her a surprise 23rd birthday party, and then proposed to her the next day. Meeting Johnny topped her husband's proposal! Rox - The Summre 2005 edition of Caribbean Word Magazine has on page 14 a short quote from Johnny with a small photo of him on the page. It reads...Johnny Depp: Sword Play In The Caribbean! Johnny Depp is getting in shape he says "It must be clean living! I don't know. I did a lot of sword fighting training for Pirates Of The Caribbean. Learning to sword fight is a total body workout without any break. After 10 minutes, you're ready to collapse. And with all that heat and humidity in the caribbean - if you see a puddle where I was standing - don't clean it up - it's me! But I'll tell you - all that training made it mentally easier for me to want to stay fit. "But I do feel pleased that I'm in better physical shape because I'm a dad and I've got two kiddies who are rapidly growing up. After turning 40, I started cutting down on my smoking, so you've got to do something to keep yourslef active and overcome your nicotine deficit. Instead of having a cigarette, you dive in the swimming pool - or some other healthy activity! For me it was sword play in the caribbean!" Kyoko - Here are more Japanese magazines with Johnny photos - Cut 11/05, Movie Star 11/05, Kinema Jumpo 11/15/05, English Journal 11/05 Roadshow 12/05, Screen 12/05, Movie Star 12/05 and a photo book called Screen Deluxe Johnny Depp. Photos of Johnny at the hand and foot print ceremony at the Flix magazine site. WEBSITES Monica - On this site Cinema.nl there is a special about A Corpse Bride, who reached now the Dutch cinema's. There is an exclusive interview with Johnny (in Dutch, by Ronald Ockhuysen) with pictures and links to other related articles. The interview was also published in the Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant today. Deppraved - One of the Cinemtical.com writers has a paragraph about Johnny's upcoming role in Shantaram; the article is titled "The Johnny Depp Junkie Movie." The article doesn't say anything we don't already know, but I was struck by the small photo of Johnny that's included. It's one that I've never seen before, and in my many years of intensive Johnny-studying, I've seen just about all of them that have been published. The photo is of Johnny sitting on a tan-colored couch in what looks like it could be someone's home, with an electric guitar, playing it, although it's not hooked up to an amp. He has on jeans and a blue long-sleeved shirt, his tortoise shell eyeglasses and his hair is long and lightened as it was in Secret Window, so it must have been taken around that time. It doesn't look like a professional photo, but more like someone who was in the room with him and happened to take his photo while he was playing around with the guitar. Take a look at this Cinematical link to see the photo. herestoyou - While cruising around the internet, I found these sites at boxofficeprophets: This is the opening page of a new feature at their site, scroll down and you'll see Johnny's name, Then when you click on Johnny's name, it takes you to a page on Johnny.
Emma - Set visit to POTC II at Coming Soon. Excerpt from an interview with Johnny Vegas in Night&Day Live Mail on Sunday October 23 2005 - This autumn see the long delayed release of Libertine in which Johnny Depp stars as the Earl of Rochester, a dissolute 17th century poet, with Vegas in the role of Depp's slobbishy wealthy sidekick. Asked to explain the reason for the movie's delayed release, he says with a straight face, 'The truth of it is that I'm by far the best thing in the film. I act Johnny Depp off the screen and he's banned it from coming out.' Then, somewhat more truthfully, he concedes that Libertine was held back so as not to coincide with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He's effusive in his praise of Depp but explains that their alleged close friendship has been blown up by the press. 'Like anyone would be, I was nervous about meeting a genuine movie star like Johnny. But I can't think of enough superlatives to explain how lovely he is. He's got this drive to do great work but he's never lost that thing of being able to treat people like they're exactly the same as him. Still it's a bit embarrassing when I hear that we've become firm friends. If you believe what you read, Johnny Depp is out on the razzle with me every night of the week. 'You've got journalists calling into my local every day and asking, "Has Depp been in today?" These are the kind of pubs that the police wouldn't go into, even if the crown jewels had been stolen and the culprits were hiding behind the bar with the loot.' AFI Fest 2005 - A TRIBUTE TO JOHNNY DEPP - Johnny Depp is one of the most versatile and compelling actors working in contemporary world cinema. His ability to first recognize and then whole-heartedly immerse himself in memorable film roles has made him the rarest of movie stars—simultaneously iconoclastic yet eminently bankable—a true original. Pivotal performances in films as diverse as CRY BABY, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, WHAT’S EATING GILBERT GRAPE, ED WOOD, DONNIE BRASCO, FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS, DON JUAN DEMARCO, BEFORE NIGHT FALLS, BLOW, CHOCOLAT and ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO make his matinee idol good looks (which have never hurt his career) almost incidental to his work as a great actor. More recently, films like PIRATES OF THE CARRIBBEAN (now with two sequels currently in production), FINDING NEVERLAND, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and the daring, edgy THE LIBERTINE (presented as a World Premiere at AFI FEST), have won Depp a new legion of fans and made him more in demand than ever, with a slew of new projects in the pipeline. Film Critic and Film Commentator Richard Schickel will join Johnny Depp on-stage in a lively conversation, which will include a career montage, film clips, anecdotes and a thoroughly engaging look into the world and art of this singular, stylish performer. herestoyou - Orlando Bloom was on Oprah the other day, from her site, this is what he said about Johnny: Orlando says that Johnny Depp, with whom he worked in Pirates of the Caribbean, has been a valuable mentor to him, on and off the set. "I have such respect for Johnny," Orlando says. "… He's such a gentleman; he's got such integrity. … He just has a wisdom about him. … He really holds himself very well. He's a real gentleman. He opens doors for everyone. He's always polite and courteous to everyone on set and he's super conscious of safety and aware of all of that stuff so that nobody ever gets hurt or injured on set. He's really aware of everyone around him—and I think awareness of people around us is hugely important." OTHER STUFF
Emma - Highlights of the 28th Starz Denver International Film Festival, which runs Nov. 10-20 at the Starz Film Center, Ellie Caulkins Opera House and other sites around town. For the full schedule, visit www.denverfilm.org. Remembering the Legendary Gonzo Writer Hunter S. Thompson. Held at the historic Denver Press Club, the memorial will include remembrances from a panel of Hunter's close friends and associates. Also featured will be the world premiere of filmmaker Wayne Ewing's documentary profiling the recent outlandish funeral service in Woody Creek, CO. The author's remains were shot out of a 153-foot cannon and rained down on family, friends and such Hollywood luminaries as Johnny Depp, Sean Penn, John Cusack and Bill Murray. Also included in the program, director Tom Thurman, working on a Starz original documentary about Thompson, will present recent interview footage with several of these luminaries. Alcohol and antics will be served.
Deppraved - In the 10/28/05 issue of Entertainment Weekly, they did a short Q&A with Radha Mitchell, who played J.M. Barrie's wife in Finding Neverland. The interview was primarily about her role in the Woody Allen film, Melinda and Melinda and working with Woody Allen and with Will Ferrell. The last question they asked her was this: lovegoscuba - Dennis Hopper was on Craig Fergusons Late late show this week. When asked what actors he admired from the past one he mentioned was Gary Cooper. When asked about todays actors he said Johnny Depp and of course Jack Nicolson. He said Johnny was a camealeon (sp?) and could melt into any character. Ironic Johnny just got the Gary Cooper award in Montana!!!
Reemi - David Amram (composer/writer) - "When I'm conducting or writing a symphony, it's not the same thing as playing with my jazz quartet or when I recently created a band with Lyle Lovett and Johnny Depp for a piece I made up for Hunter Thompson's memorial tribute in Colorado," Amram says. "Each of the idioms I work in is a lifetime pursuit, and, as I hit 75, I'm constantly striving for perfection in all the different areas of music that I work in." From Contact Music - THE THINGS THEY SAY 496 - Kirsten Dunst - "I'd move to France and watch over his lookalikes." SPIDER-MAN star KIRSTEN DUNST ponders an alternative career as a nanny to JOHNNY DEPP's children. CATCF to be released on DVD 11/8. Article about toys being produced for POTC II at Business Wire. Another article at MTV. THE LIBERTINE opens in New York and Los Angeles on November 23, and wide on January 13. According to Emma, the UK release is November 18. Singer George Jones says his life will be a movie in the near future & George says he’d love Johnny Depp to play him since he’s so good at changing his appearance. He adds that he’d have to get the hair right tho. From the Daily Cronicle - Hatch Fest wraps up star-lit night with awards - The Oscars it wasn't, but the Hatch awards ceremony was a time for praise and appreciation as the film festival wrapped up Sunday night. The red carpet was rolled out in front of the Ellen Theatre in downtown Bozeman as stars such as Jackson Browne and Peter Fonda strolled in for the ceremony. Johnny Depp was named as recipient of the film festival's top award, the Gary Cooper Spirit of Montana award. Depp didn't walk down the red carpet, but Hatch organizers said they anticipated he would show up later in the night. Another quote from Orlando Bloom on Johnny - Johnny Depp, his "Pirates" co-star, was "probably my greatest role model. He's a real class act. He's been very cool with the whole success thing. He's very down-to-earth, very comfortable with himself." Article about the prestigious award at Business Wire. Thanks soooo much to all the great fans who contribute news for this letter. Check back for a contest this month and next in celebration of the release of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory sponsored by Warner Brothers. That's all for this month. Bye for now.
