Short interview with Johnny Depp by Ben Shepherd on 22.04.04
Re: Secret Window
BS: Johnny, it's great to see you.
JD: Thank you.
BS: I'm really intrigued, it's a very interesting film. Can you just tell us a little bit about it.
JD: It's about a guy named Mort Rainey who is, er, a bit of a recluse, he's a writer. One day he gets a knock on his door, he's, er, there's this creep standing there, played by John Turturro, and he's accusing my character of stealing his story.
(clip of film)
BS: You turned 40 last year, I understand...
JD: thats what I hear, yeah, (smiles)
BS: would you agree that it is a milestone or that life begins at 40?
JD: I think it's a great one, 40's been great. Yeah, 40's probably been (pause), yeah the most interesting year for me. 39 was kinda alright, a little bit grey, you know, but 40 was sort of definite, you know.
BS: Has being a father changed your sort of attitude towards film and towards work and what films you might take, do you think?
JD: Yeah, having, having children gives you instant perspective, you know, you start to realise in a very very, er, (pause) immediate way, you know, what's important, you know, what's real and what's not real, what's important, what's not important. Umm, I think that maybe years ago I probably took this stuff way too seriously, you know.
(clip of film)
BS: Now, we've been flown over to the Isle of Man to interview you today, which is very nice for us...
JD: Thank you, thanks for coming (smiling)
BS: it's a pleasure... umm, you are currently filming "The Libertine" here...
JD: Yeah
BS: and all over Britain, are you enjoying that?
JD: Yeah, very much, yeah. I think it's going to be, err, I think it's going to be very special, this film, yeah.
BS: It's got a great cast as well, you are working with Johnny Vegas.
JD: Johnny Vegas, Samantha Morton, Richard Coyle, Jack Davenport.
BS: What do you make of Johnny Vegas?
[Johnny Vegas is an English comedian, who is overweight, generally unshaven,
sometimes drunk and usually very surreal and funny]
JD: He's great, man, Johnny's amazing, I love Johnny Vegas.
BS: I think he's fast becoming a national institution, a national treasure we call him over here.
JD: I tell you what, he's incredibly (long pause) special, yeah.
BS: Is there anything you can tell us about "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" because we are desperately excited.
JD: Boy, I'm excited too, umm, I think it's going to be, err, incredible because it's, first of all it's that strength, that foundation of, of Roald Dahl's amazing, err, book and then on top of that you got Tim Burton's, kinda, you know, his vision, his brain seeping all over it, it's going to be amazing, I think.
BS: And Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka!
JD: There is always that, yeah. (smiles)
