(Telephone) Interview with Johnny on the Jo Whiley show on Radio One, 22 April 2004.

“So long the 'Hollywood outsider' refusing to take roles in mainstream blockbusters, last year's 'Pirates of the Caribbean' put Johnny Depp firmly at the top of the movie industry A-list. Of course he did it in his own unique way, bringing more than just a touch of Keith Richards to the character of Jack Sparrow.

Back in the UK filming, we had the good fortune of getting some time with the man himself ahead of the release of 'Secret Window' (30th April)...”

‘It’s Radio One… this is the long awaited interview, talked about this for quite a long time on the show, very pleased to welcome Johnny Depp onto the show’

JW: Hiya

JD: Hi, how are you?

JW: Very good indeed thankyou… Erm, just played Oasis, they were mates of yours, I remember doing an interview with Noel Gallagher when you’d just been playing with them I think, are you still in contact?

JD: I haven’t spoken to Noel in, er, quite a while, no. We sorta lost contact with one another but er, I mean, still a huge fan, still a huge fan of them.

JW: Yeah, there are rumours they should be playing at Glastonbury, obviously a big festival in the UK over the summer, should try and get yourself a ticket.

JD: Yeah, (they’re/it’s?) amazing, I’ll try, maybe you can help me…

JW: Yeah, well, <laughs> d’ya know what? I’ll be working there, so I’ll see what I can do for you

JD: Ah, you can sneak me in in your trunk.

JW: I’ll try and do that, it’d be a pleasure. Secret Window then, the film comes out on30th April I think in this country, can you describe the film in one sentence? A way of, er, getting it over to people… what it’s about.

JD: Wow, one sentence?

JW: Yeah, just the one please.

JD: It’s a film about a reclusive writer who’s being accused of stealing someone elses story and the guy stalks him and, er, plagues him with weirdness and awfulness and…

JW: And it all ends in corn

JD: <laughs> to some degree, yeah.

JW: <laughs>… and what made you do the film? I mean, it’s a Stephen King short film, eh, short story…

JD: Yeah, I wasn’t so familiar with the Stephen King thing, you know, the novella, but er… the screen play was the first thing that attracted me. I just thought it was such a well written story and er, it had a lot of twists and turns that I didn’t expect, you know, so, I was really impressed with the screen play.

JW: You’ve been spending an awful lot of time in and around the UK, for filming purposes, with different things, [JD: Yeah…] what’s been the favourite thing you’ve experienced so far, I mean, be it pub culture, be it cream teas, TV shows that you’ve encountered, the people… has there been something that’s made an impact on you?

JD: Oh man, everything, you know… er, we’ve been sorta, er, on a tour, practically, of the UK and just going… you know, it’s been like a great big history lesson, you know, spending time at Blenheim Palace and Montecute House and shooting in all these amazing locations and er, going on.. you know.. wandering through the Tower of London and that sort of thing…

JW: Yeah, one thing I get, just from my listeners - it’s a national radio show that I do... there are sightings of you day in day out and there are always reports that you’re really kind and you kinda, look after -  speak to all the fans. Is that kinda a policy or, just good nature?

JD: Well, there’s no reason to be otherwise really is there… <laughs>

JW: Sometimes it just gets to people and they just don’t wanna speak to people that are, you know, fans.

JD: No no, I think that, you know, the kids who come around - the people who come around, I mean, it’s so nice to meet them and er.. y’know, for all intents and purposes they’re my boss aren’t they… the people who keep me employed…

JW: Exactly... decide whether you have a job or not. So, do actually get out to see any bands at all or buy any music? Which bands are you liking at the moment?

JD: I haven’t seen any... I haven’t been to any shows in so long...

JW: I tell you what, there’s one you should look out for, Goldie Lookin Chain, [JD: Yeah] if anyone mentions that band to you again then try and get to see them or listen to their music or check out the website cause they’re quite a phenomenon in the UK now.

JD: Oh, I will do, I’ll definitely check that out…

JW: Erm, can I just go through some listeners questions, if that’s alright…

JD: Yeah, yeah…

JW: There are so many of them… Cath in Oxfordshire said ‘British or American comedy, which is funnier?’

JD: British

JW: Yeah? Have you... which ones have you encountered then? Which new ones do you like? You know The Office…

JD: The Office is amazing, The Office is unbelievable but I still, y’know, I keep going back to The Fast Show because it’s, for me, it’s the top of the top you know, [JW: Yeah] it’s still the funniest thing out there.

JW: And there’s all talk of the movie, The Fast Show movie, have they approached you to be in that?

JD: I’d do it in a second… I told Paul Whitehouse the first, I think the first time I met him, I told him, I said, you have to make this film… I’d do it in a second.

JW: Excellent, ok, Little Britain aswell, have you encountered that?

JD: No, actually somebody just gave it to me the other day…

JW: Watch it, watch it the first chance, it’s really very funny.

JD: Will do.

JW: Yeah, I recommend that. Erm, Laura from Aberdeen says ‘What’s the weirdest thing a fan of yours has done?’

JD: The weirdest… [JW: yeah] Oh yeah, someone got a tattoo one time, yeah, they got a tattoo of my head, my face, on their arm, which I thought was a little bit, strange.

JW: Absolutely. And, any movie roles that you wish you hadn’t turned down?

JD: Er, no.

JW: No... there’s nothing, no regrets?

JD: No, no…

JW: Good! That’s good…

JD: I should have been Bridget Jones…

JW: You should have, you should have been Bridget Jones… [JD: Yeah] Would you be willing to put on that much weight though?

JD: Yeah, (and a dress?)

JW: You’re doing Charlie and The Chocolate Factory aswell [JD: Yeah] now, the big thing that everyone’s saying is that it’s just such great casting, and you seem like perfection for that role, is that.. does it feel like that for you aswell?

JD: Well I hope so you know. I mean, for me, it’s really exciting to, just to be able to go back to working with Tim [Burton] again, you know, it’ll be our fourth film together. And the fact that it’s, you know, from a Roald Dalh masterpiece, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, and the fact that it’s Willy Wonka, I’m very excited, I mean, you know, there’s certainly a part of me that’s just, you know, it’s a... they’re big shoes to fill, [JW: Absolutely, yeah!] so it’s a great challenge, so you know, it’s a little bit daunting at times.

JW: Are there any other, can you, who else is erm… what other casting is there that you can tell us about? Kelly Osbourne was obviously rumoured to be in it…

JD: Kelly Osbourne? [JW: Yeah] I hadn’t heard any of that, I hadn’t heard of anybody that had been cast yet. [JW: Really…] Yeah, not yet…

JW: Ok, alright... Johnny, thankyou very much indeed for talking to us today…

JD: Not at all, my pleasure.

JW: Ok, and carry on enjoying the Isle of Man

JD: Thankyou.

JW: Ok –

JD: (see you?) At the Oasis gig…

JW: Yeah, oh no - I’ll get you into the... Glastonbury Oasis, yeah, I’ll get you there, we’re side of stage, we’ll watch it there.

JD: (Cool?)

JW: Alright, Cheers…

JD: Take care, cheers Jo.
